The story follows Oliver Trembath, a young doctor who comes to the mining town of St. Just to work at the Botallack mine. Trembath is initially horrified by the conditions in the mine, but he soon comes to admire the courage and determination of the miners. The novel explores the themes of courage, friendship, and community. Trembath learns to appreciate the simple things in life, and he comes to see the miners as his friends. He also witnesses the dangers of mining, and he comes to understand the importance of safety. Deep Down is a historical novel, but it is also a work of fiction. Ballantyne uses his imagination to create a vivid and suspenseful story. The novel is full of action and adventure, and it provides a glimpse into a way of life that has long since disappeared.

Book excerpt: A tale of love, life, laughter and tragedy, with some smuggling thrown in, set amongst the people living near the tin and copper mines of St. Just, Cornwall, in the mid 19th Century. During the mid 1860's the author, R. M. Ballantyne, spent over three months living amongst the mine-workers of St. Just. He incorporates into his novel many historical facts, producing an exciting and very accurate portrayal of Victorian tin a. I really enjoyed the main character, Oliver Trembath. Trembath is a young doctor who travels to the Cornwall district in England where there are many tin mines and such. You can learn much about the mines from this book. There are rum smugglers in this book, speculations, and many other adventures. The romance, however, was a little cheesy, unlike other Ballantyne books (e.g. Post Haste.) But, overall it was good, just not Ballantyne's best work

Born Robert Michael Ballantyne in Edinburgh, he was part of a famous family of printers and publishers. In 1848 he published his first book, Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America. For some time he was employed by Messrs Constable, the publishers, but in 1856 he gave up business for the profession of literature, and began the series of adventure stories for the young with which his name is popularly associated. The Young Fur-Traders (1856), The Coral Island (1857), The World of Ice (1859), Ungava: A Tale of Eskimo Land (1857), The Dog Crusoe (1860), The Lighthouse (1865), Deep Down, a Tale of the Cornish Mines (1868), The Pirate City (1874), Erling the Bold (1869), The Settler and the Savage (1877), and other books, to the number of upwards of a hundred, followed in regular succession, his rule being in every case to write as far as possible from personal knowledge of the scenes he described.

Ballantyne children's book, here is a piece of the content as it began; BEGINS THE STORY WITH A PECULIAR MEETING. Necessity is the mother of Invention. This is undoubtedly true, but it is equally true that Invention is not the only member of Necessity's large family. Change of scene and circumstance are also among her children. It was necessity that gave birth to the resolve to travel to the end of the earth-of English earth at all events-in search of fortune, which swelled the bosom of yonder tall well-favoured youth, who, seated uncomfortably on the top of that clumsy public conveyance, drives up Market-Jew Street in the ancient town of Penzance. Yes, necessity-stern necessity, as she is sometimes called-drove that youth into Cornwall, and thus was the originating cause of that wonderful series of events which ultimately l A

Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores how Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment developments in the earth sciences and related fields (paleontology, mining, archeology, seismology, oceanography, evolution, etc.) impacted on contemporary French culture. They reveal that geological ideas were a much more pervasive and influential cultural force than has hitherto been supposed. From the mid-eighteenth century, with the publication of Buffon's seminal Théorie de la Terre (1749), until the early twentieth century, concepts and figures drawn from the earth sciences inspired some of the most important French philosophers, novelists, political theorists, historians and popularizers of science of the time. This book charts the original and influential ways in which French writers and thinkers, such as Buffon, d'Holbach, Balzac, Sand, Verne, Gide and Malraux, exploited the earth sciences for very different ends. This volume will be of interest to students, researchers and scholars of French literature in the modern period, cultural historians of modern France, scholars of European studies, of French political history, of the History of Ideas or the History of Science as well as researchers in landscape and physical geography.
