Download or read book Moon Township written by Mark Berton and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the seven original townships of Allegheny County, Moon Township has a long and rich history. From the humble home of Joshua, John, and Jacob Meek in what is now Crescent Township to the Stoops House, owned by 19th-century riverboat captain William Stoops, today's Moon Township is a byproduct of these modest roots. Formed in 1788, Moon Township's history crosses borders into neighboring Findlay and Crescent Townships, which once comprised Moon. Today Moon Township is recognized as one of the most bustling and vibrant communities in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. Home to portions of Pittsburgh International Airport, a growing commercial corridor, and hundreds of new families each year, Moon Township is a major player in the future of western Pennsylvania. Through vintage photographs, Moon Township chronicles how this area has changed with the times while preserving as much of its history as possible.

Download or read book Allendale written by Fred Litt and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The borough of Allendale, New Jersey, is a three-plus-square-mile residential community with top-ranked schools, public-spirited volunteer organizations, and a wealth of celebrated recreational properties. Surveyor Joseph Warner Allen established a railroad stop here in 1848, which attracted farm laborers, new homeowners, and vacationers looking for a summer escape. Population growth brought a local post office, a hotel, stores, a public library, and churches. The schoolhouse soon became too small. Conflicts with neighboring communities resulted in landowners voting to incorporate as the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Allendale in 1894. Residents have banded together to preserve the Celery Farm, Crestwood Lake, and the Fell House and to remember those who have served and sacrificed. Arguments over land development, police department reorganizations, and even the accidental destruction of the firehouse are also part of the Allendale story. The history of Allendale is filled with generous people, community celebrations, and constant transformation.

Book Synopsis A Coat of Many Colors by : Walter Conser
Download or read book A Coat of Many Colors written by Walter Conser and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-09-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While religious diversity is often considered a recent phenomenon in America, the Cape Fear region of southeastern North Carolina has been a diverse community since the area was first settled. Early on, the region and the port city of Wilmington were more urban than the rest of the state and thus provided people with opportunities seldom found in other parts of North Carolina. This area drew residents from many ethnic backgrounds, and the men and women who settled there became an integral part of the region’s culture. Set against the backdrop of national and southern religious experience, A Coat of Many Colors examines issues of religious diversity and regional identity in the Cape Fear area. Author Walter H. Conser Jr. draws on a broad range of sources, including congregational records, sermon texts, liturgy, newspaper accounts, family memoirs, and technological developments to explore the evolution of religious life in this area. Beginning with the story of prehistoric Native Americans and continuing through an examination of life at the end of twentieth century, Conser tracks the development of the various religions, denominations, and ethnic groups that call the Cape Fear region home. From early Native American traditions to the establishment of the first churches, cathedrals, synagogues, mosques, and temples, A Coat of Many Colors offers a comprehensive view of the religious and ethnic diversity that have characterized Cape Fear throughout its history. Through the lens of regional history, Conser explores how this area’s rich religious and racial diversity can be seen as a microcosm for the South, and he examines the ways in which religion can affect such diverse aspects of life as architecture and race relations.

Book excerpt: A multidimensional, multidisciplinary work on one of the least understood but most important conflicts in modern history. A cornerstone work in ABC-CLIO's distinguished list of reference works on military history, The Encyclopedia of the Korean War: A Political, Social, and Military History is a comprehensive resource on the confrontation that became the first shooting war of the Cold War, the first limited conflict of the Atomic Age, and the war that led to a dramatic escalation of the national security state while foreshadowing U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Encyclopedia of the Korean War offers complete coverage of strategies, weapon systems, and clashes that marked the course of events on the battlefield. But this authoritative, multidisciplinary work expands beyond the military perspective to portray the overall culture of the era, addressing a variety of political, economic, social, and popular culture topics as well. Incorporating a wealth of recent research, the new edition adds more than 130 entries and updated coverage throughout, plus more bibliographic listings, an expanded historiographical essay, and a documents volume.
