Book Synopsis Development of Insurance in Mozambique by : Israel Muchena
Download or read book Development of Insurance in Mozambique written by Israel Muchena and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By its nature, insurance is intended to provide financial protection for basic human needs such as shelter, means of self-sustenance, and well-being. You would expect that most, if not all, people would be covered by it in one form or another. Unfortunately, that is not the case for most people in Mozambique and many other low-income countries. In Development of Insurance in Mozambique, Israel Muchena answers questions such as: Why are those who need financial protection the most so often left uncovered? What should key stakeholders in the insurance sector be doing to raise awareness and to promote access of people that need financial protection the most? How do emerging concepts such as micro-insurance, weather index insurance, and digital marketing work? Muchena also examines the history of insurance, beginning with its ancient origins among traders in China, to written rules in ancient Iranian kingdoms, followed by the development of insurance through guilds in Mesopotamia and early markets in Europe. Thereafter, he leads readers up to the present day of how insurance is handled in Africa, including Mozambique.

Book Synopsis A Camera in the Garden of Eden by : Kevin Coleman
Download or read book A Camera in the Garden of Eden written by Kevin Coleman and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, the Boston-based United Fruit Company controlled the production, distribution, and marketing of bananas, the most widely consumed fresh fruit in North America. So great was the company’s power that it challenged the sovereignty of the Latin American and Caribbean countries in which it operated, giving rise to the notion of company-dominated “banana republics.” In A Camera in the Garden of Eden, Kevin Coleman argues that the “banana republic” was an imperial constellation of images and practices that was checked and contested by ordinary Central Americans. Drawing on a trove of images from four enormous visual archives and a wealth of internal company memos, literary works, immigration records, and declassified US government telegrams, Coleman explores how banana plantation workers, women, and peasants used photography to forge new ways of being while also visually asserting their rights as citizens. He tells a dramatic story of the founding of the Honduran town of El Progreso, where the United Fruit Company had one of its main divisional offices, the rise of the company now known as Chiquita, and a sixty-nine day strike in which banana workers declared their independence from neocolonial domination. In telling this story, Coleman develops a new set of conceptual tools and methods for using images to open up fresh understandings of the past, offering a model that is applicable far beyond this pathfinding study.
Book Synopsis Popular Piety and Political Identity in Mexico's Cristero Rebellion by : Matthew Butler
Download or read book Popular Piety and Political Identity in Mexico's Cristero Rebellion written by Matthew Butler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Butler provides a new interpretation of the cristero war (1926-29) which divided Mexico's peasantry into rival camps loyal to the Catholic Church (cristero) or the Revolution (agrarista). This book puts religion at the heart of our understanding of the revolt by showing how peasant allegiances often resulted from genuinely popular cultural and religious antagonisms. It challenges the assumption that Mexican peasants in the 1920s shared religious outlooks and that their behaviour was mainly driven by political and material factors. Focusing on the state of Michoacán in western-central Mexico, the volume seeks to integrate both cultural and structural lines of inquiry. First charting the uneven character of Michoacán's historical formation in the late colonial period and the nineteenth century, Dr Butler shows how the emergence of distinct agrarian regimes and political cultures was later associated with varying popular responses to post-revolutionary state formation in the areas of educational and agrarian reform. At the same time, it is argued that these structural trends were accompanied by increasingly clear divergences in popular religious cultures, including lay attitudes to the clergy, patterns of religious devotion and deviancy, levels of sacramental participation, and commitment to militant 'social' Catholicism. As peasants in different communities developed distinct parish identities, so the institutional conflict between Church and state acquired diverse meanings and provoked violently contradictory popular responses. Thus the fires of revolt burned all the more fiercely because they inflamed a countryside which - then as now - was deeply divided in matters of faith as well as politics. Based on oral testimonies and careful searches of dozens of ecclesiastical and state archives, this study makes an important contribution to the religious history of the Mexican Revolution.
