Book excerpt: This Lexicon, aimed at NGOs, lawyers, diplomats and students, follows the same method as the Lexicon of Human Rights - Les définitions des droits de l'homme, published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers in 2008. Definitions related to the environment are gathered by extracting them from relevant universal scope texts. This ordered grouping of definitions will enlighten the reader about the priorities of the international community regarding environmental law. Definitions are classified in alphabetical order, in separate English and French lists. In each language there is an alphabetical list of common terms with the equivalent second language term in square brackets. The list gives the exact detailed meaning followed by the source of each term. Following this list, a lexicon of the same terms is given under such general themes as "Mammals", "Gas", "Lead". Finally, a list of relevant documents which can be referenced for further information is included.

Book excerpt: The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 entered into force on 16 November 1994. Since this date a single binding instrument has regulated the rights and duties of States at sea and regarding the sea. New concepts, such as the exclusive economic zone, archipelagic waters, transit passage through straits, and the International Seabed Area, are now fully recognized. The fifteen member States of the European Union are a significant sample for analyzing the practice of States, or at least that of the Western industrialized States, as regards the law of the sea. They include major and small maritime powers, coastal and land-locked States, States with coasts on the Atlantic Ocean and States with coasts on semi-enclosed seas such as the Baltic and the Mediterranean, States with and without involvement in deep seabed mining and States with different interests as regards fisheries. The fact that they all belong to the European Union is a very important common feature, which amply justifies the choice made to study them together. The book's aim is to give, through essays prepared by well-known specialists, a detailed survey of the attitudes and practice concerning the law of the sea of the member States of the European Union and of the European Community as such. The common positions of the member States and the results of their coordinated action also emerge from these essays. The fact that the member States and the European Community are now actively engaged in the process of becoming parties to the Law of the Sea Convention is certainly a major contribution to the consolidation of the Convention as a universal instrument, or at least as an instrument widely ratified by States of all continents and economic and political interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental pollution is a concern of many people in Egypt and the world in general. People and Pollution is a study of how Egyptians in particular understand environmental problems and what their roles are in the solutions. This original study is based on extensive field research with both academic and policy relevance. The uniqueness of the book comes from its focus: instead of the usual approach of analyzing policy and measurements, this text seeks to understand how the people themselves, often the objects of policy, understand their environment and their own actions. An interesting finding from the research lies in the focus of Egyptian concerns. Rather than the global perspective (the depletion of the ozone layer, protection of coral reefs and rainforests, and so on) that is common in the West, Egyptians are mainly concerned with matters of immediate environmental degradation, such as garbage, sewage, dirty streets, and noise pollution. In addition, the researchers have found that people are often able to effect changes themselves through cooperation with neighbors, thus bypassing the 'official' channels of redress such as NGOs and local government officials. The difference in focus of concern and courses of action may be extrapolated to many Third World or developing nations, and leads to provocative questions regarding policymaking for public participation in future environmental campaigns.Descriptive views from the authors, eloquent and moving testimony from members of the community, and clear statistical analysis of the findings make this book a highly readable text. People and Pollution is a pioneering and important work that should be consulted by environmentally concerned readers, students, and policymakers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Waste Technology and Production covers the proceedings of an international seminar organized by the Senior Advisers to ECE Governments on Environmental Problems on the Principles and Creation of Non-Waste Technology and Production, held in Paris on November 29 – December 4, 1976. The book focuses on the dynamics, applications, processes, and methodologies involved in non-waste technology, including recycling and measures adopted by countries on non-waste development. The selection first offers information on the concepts and principles of non-waste technology, as well as the social aspects of the problems of non-waste technology; and systems analysis as a basis for the creation of non-waste technology. The text also provides an introduction to recycling in CTS as a means of reducing waste and methods of processing waste into secondary material resources. The book then takes a look at concepts and principles of non-waste technology and the adoption of eco-activity as an approach to non-waste technology. The text surveys the application of non-waste development in different countries, such as Austria, Belgium, Federal Republic of Germany, Poland, the United States, Yugoslavia, and Sweden. The manuscript also underscores the applications of non-waste technology in the industrial settings and the methods of conserving raw material and energy and protecting the environment in chemical and electro-chemical plating plants. The book is a vital reference for readers and environmentalists interested in non-waste technology.
