Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-scale system is composed of several interconnected subsystems. For such a system it is often desired to have some form of decentralization in the control structure, since it is typically not realistic to assume that all output measurements can be transmitted to every local control station. Problems of this kind can appear in electric power systems, communication networks, large space structures, robotic systems, economic systems, and traffic networks, to name only a few. Typical large-scale control systems have several local control stations which observe only local outputs and control only local inputs. All controllers are involved, however, in the control operation of the overall system. The focus of this book is on the efficient control of interconnected systems, and it presents systems analysis and controller synthesis techniques using a variety of methods. A systematic study of multi-input, multi-output systems is carried out and illustrative examples are given to clarify the ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to 40 years of contributions by Professor Mo Jamshidi who is a well known and respected scholar, researcher, and educator. Mo Jamshidi has spent his professional career formalizing and extending the field of large-scale complex systems (LSS) engineering resulting in educating numerous graduates specifically, ethnic minorities. He has made significant contributions in modeling, optimization, CAD, control and applications of large-scale systems leading to his current global role in formalizing system of systems engineering (SoSE), as a new field. His books on complex LSS and SoSE have filled a vacuum in cyber-physical systems literature for the 21st Century. His contributions to ethnic minority engineering education commenced with his work at the University of New Mexico (UNM, Tier-I Hispanic Serving Institution) in 1980 through a NASA JPL grant. Followed by several more major federal grants, he formalized a model for educating minorities, called VI-P Pyramid where K-12 students(bottom of pyramid) to doctoral (top of pyramid) students form a seamless group working on one project. Upper level students mentor lower ones on a sequential basis. Since 1980, he has graduated over 114 minority students consisting of 62 Hispanics, 34 African Americans., 15 Native Americans, and 3 Pacific Islanders. This book contains contributed chapters from colleagues, and former and current students of Professor Jamshidi. Areas of focus are: control systems, energy and system of systems, robotics and soft computing.

This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In practice, actuators often undergo failures and various factors influence its effectiveness. Also due to the increasing complexity of large-scale systems, subsystems are often interconnected, whereas the interactions between any two subsystems are difficult to deal with. This book details a series of new methodologies of designing and analyzing adaptive backstepping control systems involving treatment on actuator failures, subsystem interactions and nonsmooth nonlinearities. Moreover, it discusses some interesting open issues in adaptive failure accommodation, decentralized adaptive control and distributed adaptive coordinated control.

Book excerpt: Optimal Event-triggered Control using Adaptive Dynamic Programming discusses event triggered controller design which includes optimal control and event sampling design for linear and nonlinear dynamic systems including networked control systems (NCS) when the system dynamics are both known and uncertain. The NCS are a first step to realize cyber-physical systems (CPS) or industry 4.0 vision. The authors apply several powerful modern control techniques to the design of event-triggered controllers and derive event-trigger condition and demonstrate closed-loop stability. Detailed derivations, rigorous stability proofs, computer simulation examples, and downloadable MATLAB® codes are included for each case. The book begins by providing background on linear and nonlinear systems, NCS, networked imperfections, distributed systems, adaptive dynamic programming and optimal control, stability theory, and optimal adaptive event-triggered controller design in continuous-time and discrete-time for linear, nonlinear and distributed systems. It lays the foundation for reinforcement learning-based optimal adaptive controller use for infinite horizons. The text then: Introduces event triggered control of linear and nonlinear systems, describing the design of adaptive controllers for them Presents neural network-based optimal adaptive control and game theoretic formulation of linear and nonlinear systems enclosed by a communication network Addresses the stochastic optimal control of linear and nonlinear NCS by using neuro dynamic programming Explores optimal adaptive design for nonlinear two-player zero-sum games under communication constraints to solve optimal policy and event trigger condition Treats an event-sampled distributed linear and nonlinear systems to minimize transmission of state and control signals within the feedback loop via the communication network Covers several examples along the way and provides applications of event triggered control of robot manipulators, UAV and distributed joint optimal network scheduling and control design for wireless NCS/CPS in order to realize industry 4.0 vision An ideal textbook for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, university researchers, and practicing engineers, Optimal Event Triggered Control Design using Adaptive Dynamic Programming instills a solid understanding of neural network-based optimal controllers under event-sampling and how to build them so as to attain CPS or Industry 4.0 vision.

Book excerpt: This book presents a series of innovative technologies and research results on adaptive control of dynamic systems with quantization, uncertainty, and nonlinearity, including the theoretical success and practical development such as the approaches for stability analysis, the compensation of quantization, the treatment of subsystem interactions, and the improvement of system tracking and transient performance. Novel solutions by adopting backstepping design tools to a number of hotspots and challenging problems in the area of adaptive control are provided. In the first three chapters, the general design procedures and stability analysis of backstepping controllers and the basic descriptions and properties of quantizers are introduced as preliminary knowledge for this book. In the remainder of this book, adaptive control schemes are introduced to compensate for the effects of input quantization, state quantization, both input and state/output quantization for uncertain nonlinear systems and are applied to helicopter systems and DC Microgrid. Discussion remarks are provided in each chapter highlighting new approaches and contributions to emphasize the novelty of the presented design and analysis methods. Simulation results are also given in each chapter to show the effectiveness of these methods. This book is helpful to learn and understand the fundamental backstepping schemes for state feedback control and output feedback control. It can be used as a reference book or a textbook on adaptive quantized control for students with some background in feedback control systems. Researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the fields of control, information, and communication, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and others will benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: The material presented in this monograph is a logical continuation of research results achieved in the control of manipulation robots. This is in a way, a synthesis of many-year research efforts of the associates of Robotics Department, Mihailo Pupin Institute, in the field of dynamic control.of robotic systems. As in Vol. 2 of this Series, all results rely on the mathematical models of dynamics of active spatial mechanisms which offer the possibility for adequate dynamic control of manipula tion robots. Compared with Vol. 2, this monograph has three essential new character istics, and a variety of new tasks arising in the control of robots which have been formulated and solved for the first time. One of these novelties is nonadaptive control synthesized for the case of large variations in payload parameters, under the condition that the practical stability of the overall system is satisfied. Such a case of control synthesis meets the actual today's needs in industrial robot applications. The second characteristic of the monograph is the efficient adaptive control algorithm based on decentralized control structure intended for tasks in which parameter variations cannot be specified in advance. To be objective, this is not the case in industrial robotics today. Thus, nonadaptive control with and without a particular parameter variation is supplemented by adaptive dynamic control algorithms which will cer tainly be applicable in the future industrial practice when parametric identification of workpieces will be required.
