Book Synopsis Counter-terrorist Law and Emergency Powers in the United Kingdom, 1922-2000 by : Laura K. Donohue
Download or read book Counter-terrorist Law and Emergency Powers in the United Kingdom, 1922-2000 written by Laura K. Donohue and published by Collected Poems of James Clare. This book was released on 2001 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the first Special Powers Act in 1922, passed to reduce violence in Northern Ireland after it was calved off from Ireland, Donohue (government, Harvard U.) examines the repeated introduction and exercise of extraordinary powers to counter Northern Irish political violence on both sides of the Irish Sea. She argues that characteristics of the emergency legislation itself, and the historical and political context contributed to the permanent adoption of what were always meant as temporary emergency measures. Book Synopsis Competition and the Corporate Society by : Nigel Harris
Download or read book Competition and the Corporate Society written by Nigel Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British society changed radically in the 21st century. Any political party dedicated to preserving the Britain of 1900 would have faced, over time, either major problems of adjustment or the possibility of its own destruction. The British Conservative party was just such a party, its character defined by its commitment to the defence of the British status quo. Yet it has also been one of the most successful political parties in the twentieth century. Not only was it able to adjust itself to the transformation of British society including two world wars and the most catastrophic slump – but it was able to win elections more consistently than any of its rivals. This book seeks to show how the Conservatives achieved such a metamorphosis, by identifying the main changes in the British economy and society, and the changing Conservative response. In practice, there was no single Conservative response to any particular change. The debate within the party revealed a surprisingly large number of responses; yet the range was limited. Indeed, with some simplification, one can see only two general political positions, from which flowed differing proposals on all detailed issues. In describing these two positions, the author suggests a new method of classifying dominant political beliefs in Britain and other Western countries. This study covers a wide field, bringing together contemporary Conservative politics, economic problems and economic history. The Conservatives were intimately related to the interests of what used to be called British capitalism, and their attitudes to the changes taking place in industry reveal most clearly the changing political priorities of the party. The book examines Conservative policy, proposals and attitudes to nationalization and the public sector, to the trade unions and labour, to private business and finally to the economic role of the State, between 1945 and 1964. For those wishing to gain an understanding of the British Conservatives, Nigel Harris’ detailed and stimulating material will make excellent reading and has been acclaimed since its first publication in 1972.
Download or read book Crossing the floor written by Geoff Horn and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reg Prentice remains the most high-profile politician to cross the floor of the House of Commons in the post-war period. His defection reflected an important 'sea change' in British politics; the end of the post-war consensus and the beginnings of the Thatcher era. This book examines the key events surrounding Prentice's transition from a front-line Labour politician to a Conservative minister in the first Thatcher government. It focuses on the shifting political climate in Britain during the 1970s, as the post-war settlement came under pressure from adverse economic conditions, militant trade unionism and an assertive New Left. Prentice's story provides an important case study on the crisis that afflicted social democracy, highlighting Labour's left-right divide and the possibility of a realignment of British politics. This study will be invaluable to anyone interested in the turbulent and transitional nature of British politics during a watershed period.

Download or read book Disraeli written by David Cesarani and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lauded as a “great Jew,” excoriated by antisemites, and one of Britain’s most renowned prime ministers, Benjamin Disraeli has been widely celebrated for his role in Jewish history. But is the perception of him as a Jewish hero accurate? In what ways did he contribute to Jewish causes? In this groundbreaking, lucid investigation of Disraeli’s life and accomplishments, David Cesarani draws a new portrait of one of Europe’s leading nineteenth-century statesmen, a complicated, driven, opportunistic man. While acknowledging that Disraeli never denied his Jewish lineage, boasted of Jewish achievements, and argued for Jewish civil rights while serving as MP, Cesarani challenges the assumption that Disraeli truly cared about Jewish issues. Instead, his driving personal ambition required him to confront his Jewishness at the same time as he acted opportunistically. By creating a myth of aristocratic Jewish origins for himself, and by arguing that Jews were a superior race, Disraeli boosted his own career but also contributed to the consolidation of some of the most fundamental stereotypes of modern antisemitism.

Book Synopsis The Development of British Immigration Law by : Vaughan Bevan
Download or read book The Development of British Immigration Law written by Vaughan Bevan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Development of British Immigration Law (1986) examines the policies and laws of immigration law in the UK. It demonstrates that many modern issues have historical precedents. The justifications for immigration control are examined and linked to a discussion of nationality law and race relations. It is argued that the laws and practices of immigration are unnecessarily rigid and racist, both in design and in effect; that the record of the UK is a sorry chapter in the field of human rights but one which is consistent with international state practice; that immigration is an ideal model to illustrate the UK’s general treatment of civil liberties. Particular aspects of the subject are examined in depth to illustrate the attitudes of government, the courts and civil servants.
Book Synopsis Devolution, Law Making and the Constitution by : Robert Hazell
Download or read book Devolution, Law Making and the Constitution written by Robert Hazell and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores the future of devolution, by examining the new political dynamics devolution has put into play. These concern devolution's operation and also its impact - how devolution has altered politics in the parts of the UK that experience devolution and in the UK as a whole. Chapters examine the key topics in devolution, and examine the interplay between institutional change and social, economic and political forces (both those that existed before devolution and those brought into being by it). This interplay creates scope for varying forms of change, but what that change means varies from topic to topic. In some cases - such as Wales - institutional issues remain to the fore, while in others - such as Scotland - pressures for institutional change are relatively limited but the devolved institutions create scope for new political factors to come into play. The book is written by members of the Constitution Unit at UCL and leading experts from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."--BOOK JACKET.
