How deep into the depths of despair must author Joel Lee Russell descend before he learns to open his body, mind and soul to the magnificence of devotion and faith? After surviving a tortured childhood, Russell's challenges continue when he arrives in Vietnam during the height of the Tet Offensive. While Russell's outfit of Marines dwindles from 250 men to 79 in a matter of four hours, he beseeches God to save him and promises to dedicate his life, from that moment on, to something greater than himself. Even though we think we are eager to learn our lessons and to improve ourselves, the training we endure is often complicated and challenging. After Joel Lee Russell, nicknamed Last Days Joel, repeatedly escapes death's sting, he opens himself to a divine beauty that soars beyond his belief. About the Author: Author Joel Lee Russell was born in 1948. He is the eleventh child and the seventh son in a family with 12 children. Book excerpt: Ours is a death-denying society. But death is inevitable, and we must face the question of how to deal with it. Coming to terms with our own finiteness helps us discover life's true meaning. Why do we treat death as a taboo? What are the sources of our fears? How do we express our grief, and how do we accept the death of a person close to us? How can we prepare for our own death? Drawing on our own and other cultures' views of death and dying, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross provides some illuminating answers to these and other questions. She offers a spectrum of viewpoints, including those of ministers, rabbis, doctors, nurses, and sociologists, and the personal accounts of those near death and of their survivors. Once we come to terms with death as a part of human development, the author shows, death can provide us with a key to the meaning of human existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is something we all confront—it touches our families, our homes, our hearts. And yet we have grown used to denying its existence, treating it as an enemy to be beaten back with medical advances. We are living at a unique point in human history. People are living longer than ever, yet the longer we live, the more taboo and alien our mortality becomes. Yet we, and our loved ones, still remain mortal. People today still struggle with this fact, as we have done throughout our entire history. What led us to this point? What drove us to sanitize death and make it foreign and unfamiliar?Schillace shows how talking about death, and the rituals associated with it, can help provide answers. It also brings us closer together—conversation and community are just as important for living as for dying. Some of the stories are strikingly unfamiliar; others are far more familiar than you might suppose. But all reveal much about the present—and about ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book thoroughly covers the field of stinging insect allergy; addressing all clinical aspects, including diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations. Stinging Insect Allergy: A Clinician’s Guide begins with a look into the entomologic aspects of Hymenoptera insects (bees, vespids, wasps and ants), which cause nearly all the IgE mediated reactions due to insects. Further chapters single out and examine the unique aspects of common Hymenoptera species, such as bees and fire ants, in rich detail. Later chapters clinically review what is known about non-Hymenoptera biting insects, such as mosquitoes. In addition, multiple chapters address the overlap of Hymenoptera allergy as practiced in North America and Europe, as well as other sciences. Final chapters cover the impact ecology is having on insect allergy; and the impact insect allergy is having on other areas of medicine, such as mast cell disorders. Stinging Insect Allergy: A Clinician’s Guide is an ideal resource for medical students, residents, allergists, and general practitioners alike, and also serves as an important reference text for any practitioner of allergy and immunology who desires a complete picture of Hymenoptera and non-Hymenoptera insect allergy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the mirror to my soul. It tells about how I felt when certain things came into my life. It also explains how I saw the things that God the Father created. It is a depiction of my feelings when I received the Spirit of the Lord and let Him lead me down the path of righteousness. I have been writing this book for over twenty years. It did not start out as a book, I first was just writing down my spiritual thoughts that the spirit told me to write in journals that I kept. The Spirit of the Lord would wake me from a sound sleep and through thoughts put these words into my head. My children are the ones who encouraged me to turn these writings into a book. I thought that was flattering and I considered doing so, but the spirit did not give me the go head until now. I guess He was not through telling me what to write. I kept reading my bible and going to church and getting closer and closer to my savior Jesus Christ. I literal fell in love with God the father and Jesus Christ the son. When I received the Holy Spirit I didnt know what was happening to me. I felt a burning sensation, as if I was on fire and I saw red when I closed my eyes. I went into a deep sleep and when I awaken in the morning I felt brand new. I wanted to pick up the bible and start reading what thus sayeth the Lord. That was the best feeling I have ever had, not even when I gave birth to my two children, did I feel that sensation. Getting to know God and feeling His spirit within you is the greatest feeling in the world. I was taught who God the father is and why Jesus was sent to die for us. I learned how to live a peaceful and joyous life and to keep them both in my sight, so that when I came to the light I could follow them. I was taught that I could receive eternal life, if I keep the faith, believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Confess that He died for my sins and turn from my wicked ways; be water baptized and spirit filled, than I would be saved. This is a wonderful feeling to have. I hope I give whoever reads this word inspiration to get to know the Father God and the son Jesus Christ the anointed one and let the spirit come in and have His will so that you too can experience the same feeling that I have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist theorists have often argued that aesthetic surgeries and body makeovers dehumanize and disempower women patients, whose efforts at self-improvement lead to their objectification. Amending the Abject Body proposes that although objectification is an important element in this phenomenon, the explosive growth of "makeover culture" can be understood as a process of both abjection (ridding ourselves of the unwanted) and identification (joining the community of what Julia Kristeva calls "clean and proper bodies"). Drawing from the advertisement and advocacy of body makeovers on television, in aesthetic surgery trade books, and in the print and Web-based marketing of face lifts, tummy tucks, and Botox injections, Deborah Caslav Covino articulates the relationship among objectification, abjection, and identification, and offers a fuller understanding of contemporary beauty-desire.

Book excerpt: In a discussion of the Renaissance revival of classical culture, Piccolomini considers the period s mythologizing of Brutus, Caesar s assassin. He cites Dante as the initiator of an important literary, dramatic, political, and artistic theme and explains how the historical Brutus was changed by literature and theatre into a symbol of the just citizen rebelling against the unjust tyrant.Piccolomini discusses several Renaissance political conspiracies modeled after Brutus act and explores how those conspiracies, in turn, formed the basis for the theme s recurrence in Italian, French, and English theatre of the period."
