Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a memoir. As a child and a young man, I rarely felt entitled to breath air. Emotionally neglected by my father, as a teen, I left home for a prep school at which I would spend the worst three years of my life. Trouble followed two failed attempts at undergraduate college, until I found my way to a horseshoeing school out west. I was able to work as a professional farrier for several years until a ruptured disc in my back forced a career change. I chose psychology as somewhere in the back of my mind the depression I endured as a child motivated me back to school to try to help others, eventually becoming a licensed psychologist. It was a good fit and I have been practicing for the past twenty-five years, including many years as an instructor in psychology for Harvard Medical School. About seven years ago, I acquired tinnitus (along with 50 to 60 million other Americans) and using my personal practice of meditation, developed a program to help myself and my patients manage this chronic illness. In short, this work traces the 'forging' of a debilitating sense of self and outlines the potential for it's 'death' resulting in a selflessness that connects to the boundless goodness of the universe. Lastly, I have been helped in no small way throughout, by the profound empathy I have shared with many magnificent beasts of the canine variety.

Book excerpt: 2020 Eisner Award for Best Academic/Scholarly Work Entertaining Comics Group (EC Comics) is perhaps best-known today for lurid horror comics like Tales from the Crypt and for a publication that long outlived the company’s other titles, Mad magazine. But during its heyday in the early 1950s, EC was also an early innovator in another genre of comics: the so-called “preachies,” socially conscious stories that boldly challenged the conservatism and conformity of Eisenhower-era America. EC Comics examines a selection of these works—sensationally-titled comics such as “Hate!,” “The Guilty!,” and “Judgment Day!”—and explores how they grappled with the civil rights struggle, antisemitism, and other forms of prejudice in America. Putting these socially aware stories into conversation with EC’s better-known horror stories, Qiana Whitted discovers surprising similarities between their narrative, aesthetic, and marketing strategies. She also recounts the controversy that these stories inspired and the central role they played in congressional hearings about offensive content in comics. The first serious critical study of EC’s social issues comics, this book will give readers a greater appreciation of their legacy. They not only served to inspire future comics creators, but also introduced a generation of young readers to provocative ideas and progressive ideals that pointed the way to a better America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by the author of Lady Chatterley’s Loverpresents his musings on literature, politics and philosophy in a newly restored text. Though D. H. Lawrence was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, his works were severely corrupted by the stringent house-styling of printers and the intrusive editing of timid publishers. A team of scholars at Cambridge University Press has worked for more than thirty years to restore the definitive texts of D. H. Lawrence in The Cambridge Editions. Between 1915–1925, D. H. Lawrence wrote a series of “philosophicalish” essays covering topics ranging from politics to nature, and from religion to education. Varying in tone from lighthearted humor to spiritual meditation, they all share the underlying themes of Lawrence’s mature work: “Be thyself.” As far as possible, the editors of the Cambridge Editions series have restored these essays to their original form as Lawrence wrote them. A discussion of the history of each essay is provided, and several incomplete and unpublished essays are reproduced in an appendix.

Book excerpt: Some days you are your worst enemy Dead Reflection (Book Two of the Replicant Trilogy) Book Two: Dead Reflection Tank catches a wave with a Replicant to another version of Earth. It's sort of like his own planet, but with a few critical differences. The Navigator tech created by Dunk is being used to kill civilians, meaning the Navigators are a lethal enemy of the people. Once again, Tank fights his way across his homeland, but this time he's headed to Washington, DC. He has a bone to pick with the President. ***************************** (Available Now) Ghost Born (Book One of the Replicant series) The tech was genius, with armor, hydraulics and advanced vision. Tank could have saved a lot of lives with it in the suck. Instead he had left the army to take care of his late wife and joined a mad research team called CaliTech hiding deep in Sequoia National Park. He was testing the gear with his squad, Lexie and Ark, when everything went badly wrong. Replicants intent on murdering their twins dropped from the sky like a reverse Rapture. If that wasn't bad enough, more people randomly turned into homicidal maniacs, making it impossible to pick the good guys from the bad. A once ordered world collapsed in to chaos almost overnight, catching Tank and Lexie well outside the wire. They were making their way through the death zone from Albuquerque to CaliTech, but the boss has other ideas. Dunk might be mad as they make 'em, but at the end of days and crazy is all they've got. (Available Now) Lost Origin (Book Three: of the Replicant series) The only way is forward and Tank heads out to find himself caught in Hecate's web. His namesake, First Tank, is on the hunt for his son, while Isaiah is determined to become the ruling triumvirate on Hecate's Earth. Our three Tanks are on a collision course that will change the direction of the Universe. There is never a dull moment, or a sane enemy, in Tanner's collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part I: Battling the Como’s. “Beneath the Moon’s Reflection” opens in the serenity of night, with the moon hanging like a silver coin on a velvet canvas, throwing a meditative radiance over the protagonist’s house. You, this lone figure, stand by the window, a vessel of churning emotions exposed to the thoughtful silence of 2 a.m. During these silent hours, the mind confronts its fundamental defects and issues. For as long as you can remember, life has been a never-ending game of ping-pong, alternating between thrilling successes and shattering failures. Each effort has left you exhausted and scarred, and the desire to give up has persisted in your mind. However, a persistent light within you refuses to extinguish. Fueled by a symphony of tears, laughter, joy, and sadness, this flame symbolizes your unwavering determination. In this very introspective section, you begin on a trip through the maze of your emotions. The moon, a silent witness to your evolution, symbolizes optimism and rejuvenation. Through meaningful discussions with the cosmos, you realize that happiness cannot be found but must be produced from the inside. You know that life is not a war to be won, but an adventure to be had. In its immensity, the universe is not an opponent but rather a companion on your journey, providing you with the insight you need to pursue your route to pleasure. Part II: The Beauty of Death The narrative switches to investigate the concept of death, which is typically cloaked in fear and mystery. However, this book section approaches death from a new angle, seeing it as a potential source of beauty and release. Death, while often regarded as the great unknown, can also be viewed as a respite from the difficulties and tribulations of daily life. It is the ultimate freedom, freeing people from their commitments in life and giving them a new perspective on the inevitability of death. The inquiry broadens to encompass the “Rules of Death,” a sophisticated set of guidelines that regulate this newfound knowledge. Death, like life, has its own set of rules. The taboo of willfully killing oneself is central to these ideas, emphasizing the significance of accepting the natural flow of existence. This prohibition encourages people to recognize their path’s importance and let the universe unfold as it should. In this section, the protagonist explores the emotional and spiritual dimensions of death, recognizing the loss and pain that come with losing loved ones. However, by acknowledging the beauty of death, sorrow can be transformed into a celebration of life and the journey beyond this world.

Although Heidegger's own treatment deliberately refrains from engaging theological perspectives, George Pattison suggests that these not only serve to bring out problematic elements in his own approach but also point to the larger human or anthropological issues in play. Pattison reveals where and how Heidegger and theology part ways but also how Heidegger can helpfully challenge theology to rethink one of its own fundamental questions: human beings' relation to their death and the meaning of death in their religious lives.

Its job is to help humans with the technological sophistication they have. Furthermore, civilization does not only present Sophia. There is another thing that civilization shows: Syria. In Syria, there is an endless civil war that has cost thousands of lives. Of course, there-is a lot more to civilization. During the last 17 Years (2002-2019), I've crossed five continents from Australia to North Korea, from Beijing to Prague, then from Russia to Denmark. I witnessed various civilizations ranging from the most ancient civilizations in Egypt to the most advanced civilizations in the United States, France, Norway, and Great Britain, starting from Mecca to Venice. So many things that I saw. So many encounters I had with the geniuses and the dead giants. So deep and high are the achievements of art, economics, science, and human's spirituality that I have observed. There is also a great example the warriors advised me through their sacrifices. Now, I have put those entire encounters in this little book. Civilizations are indeed very varied. There's Sophia on the left, and, there's Syria On the right. Hopefully, Indonesia will not choose the wrong choice.

Book excerpt: The codes of conduct imposed on females by Spain's dictator Francisco Franco after the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) created a stifling environment for women until his death in 1975. Beginning with Carmen Laforet's 1944 Nadal Prize-winning novel Nada, novels by women - many of which explore female identity - began to proliferate in Spain. The works examined in this study - Nada, Primera memoria (1960) by Ana Maria Matute, La placa del Diamant (1962) by Merce Rodoreda, Julia (1969) by Ana Maria Moix, El cuarto de atras (1978) by Carmen Martin Gaite, El amor es un juego solitario (1979) by Esther Tusquets, and Questio d'amor propi (1987) by Carme Riera - feature female protagonists struggling for self-realization and, by extension, for change in a restrictive Spanish society. Schumm's analysis of the seven novels demonstrates how examination of metaphoric tropes and mirror images provides insight into the protagonists' development.
