David (as he's currently known) was a member of an elite corps of spies trained during the coldest days of the Cold War. For almost a decade he has been out of the game, working as a sculptor. Then a phone call in the middle of the night awakens him: the only other survivor from that elite corps has gone rogue. David is tasked with stopping him. What ensues is an existential cat-and-mouse game played out across the American landscape, through the diners and motels that dot the terrain like green plastic houses on a Monopoly board. Both a suspenseful novel of pursuit and a thematically rich exploration of the mind of a spy, Death Will Have Your Eyes is a contemporary classic of the espionage genre.

Book Synopsis Arts - Therapies - Communication European Arts Therapy by : Line Kossolapow
Download or read book Arts - Therapies - Communication European Arts Therapy written by Line Kossolapow and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stipulation of a present actual position of Art Therapy, however, inevitably leads to further thoughts about ongoing development. Everything required for the theoretical-practical founding of a European Art Therapy, as discipline still has to be done, including construction of a communicative bridge to partners in other continents or countries. This development work has two strands of development. One follows a more theoretical direction with European Art Therapy as a research and teaching subject as an objective in view. The other is directed more towards practical fieldwork, which, in turn, can lead to the establishment of funds of experience as well as quantitative and qualitative investigations and thus to theoretical-methodical statements. In the contributions on hand both connections pervade. Naturally the individual articles in this collection do not fully expound the volume of art therapeutic work throughout Europe but they are a source of information and inspiration for the user from theory and / or practice, who can then find his particular niche with his own specific interests within the cross-section and subsequently continue the discourse spatially and objectively.

This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fourth volume of the popular series 'Neurological Disorders in Famous Artists' we once again delve into the minds of writers, painters, and poets in order to gain better insight on how neurological and psychiatric diseases can influence creativity. The issue of schizophrenia, the interaction between psychological instability and drug abuse, and the intricate association between organic wounds and shell-shock disorders are illustrated with the examples of Franz Kafka, Raymond Roussel, and Louis-Ferdinand Céline and their writings. Dementia has been specifically studied before, including in the previous volumes of Neurological Disorders in Famous Artists. It is revisited here in order to present the striking and well-documented case of Willem de Kooning, which inspired a new approach. Apart from issues that sometimes border on neuropsychiatry, purer neurological cases such as post-amputation limb pain (Arthur Rimbaud) or tabetic ataxia (Edouard Manet) are presented as well. Other fascinating life trajectories associated with cerebral or psychological changes include those of the writers Bjornsen, Tolstoi, Turgeniev, Mann, Ibsen, and Pavese.

Book excerpt: “A breezy, inviting collection of love poems that celebrates the divine as much as it does the natural world or human relationships . . . An eloquent celebration of simple joy from one of America’s most beloved poets.” —The Washington Post “Oliver’s poems are thoroughly convincing—as genuine, moving, and implausible as the first caressing breeze of spring.” —New York Times Book Review Mary Oliver, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, celebrates love in this collection of poems "If I have any secret stash of poems, anywhere, it might be about love, not anger," Mary Oliver once said in an interview. Finally, in her stunning new collection, Felicity, we can immerse ourselves in Oliver’s love poems. Here, great happiness abounds. Our most delicate chronicler of physical landscape, Oliver has described her work as loving the world. With Felicity she examines what it means to love another person. She opens our eyes again to the territory within our own hearts; to the wild and to the quiet. In these poems, she describes—with joy—the strangeness and wonder of human connection. As in Blue Horses, Dog Songs, and A Thousand Mornings, with Felicity Oliver honors love, life, and beauty.
Book Synopsis A Selection of Modern Italian Poetry in Translation by : Roberta L. Payne
Download or read book A Selection of Modern Italian Poetry in Translation written by Roberta L. Payne and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was Italian poetry like in the years of extraordinary historical, intellectual, aesthetic, and spiritual change between the 1860s and the Unification of Italy in the 1960s? In A Selection of Modern Italian Poetry in Translation Roberta Payne provides a bilingual collection of ninety-two poems by thirty-five Italian poets, including works of classicism and passionate decadentism, examples of crepuscularism, and poetry by Ungaretti, Montale, and Quasimodo. Payne pays particular attention to poets of the fifties and sixties, futurists, and female poets. She notes that the futurists, who have rarely been translated, were particularly important as they were truly original, attempting to develop new notions of word, line, sound, and phrase. Such new notions make translating them particularly challenging. She also offers a large sampling from poets of the fifties and sixties, many of whom have won the Viareggio Prize. Poems by women in this volume reflect diverse schools and directions while maintaining a distinctly female voice. Containing the original Italian and the translation side-by-side, this volume offers a wonderful introduction to Italian poetry to scholars and general readers alike.

Book Synopsis Mario Giacomelli by : Virginia Heckert
Download or read book Mario Giacomelli written by Virginia Heckert and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new look at the work of Mario Giacomelli, one of Italy’s foremost photographers of the twentieth century. Mario Giacomelli (1925–2000) was born into poverty and lived his entire life in Senigallia, a seaside town along the Adriatic coast in Italy’s Marche region. He purchased his first camera in 1953 and quickly gained recognition for the raw expressiveness of his images. His preference for grainy, high-contrast film and paper produced bold, geometric compositions with glowing whites and deep blacks. Giacomelli most frequently focused his camera on the people, landscapes, and seascapes of the Marche, and he often spent several years expanding and reinterpreting a single body of work or repurposing an image made for one series for inclusion in another. By applying titles derived from poetry and literature to his photographs, he transformed ordinary subjects into meditations on time, memory, and existence. Spanning the photographer’s earliest pictures to those made in the final years of his life, this publication celebrates the J. Paul Getty Museum’s extensive Giacomelli holdings, formed in large part through a significant gift from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser.

Book excerpt: Beautiful early writings by one of the 20th century’s greatest poets on the 150th anniversary of his birth A Penguin Classic The poems, prose, and drama gathered in When You Are Old present a fresh portrait of the Nobel Prize–winning writer as a younger man: the 1890s aesthete who dressed as a dandy, collected Irish folklore, dabbled in magic, and wrote heartrending poems for his beloved, the beautiful, elusive Irish revolutionary Maud Gonne. Included here are such celebrated, lyrical poems as “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” and “He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven,” as well as Yeats’s imaginative retellings of Irish fairytales—including his first major poem, “The Wanderings of Oisin,” based on a Celtic fable—and his critical writings, which offer a fascinating window onto his artistic theories. Through these enchanting works, readers will encounter Yeats as the mystical, lovelorn bard and Irish nationalist popular during his own lifetime. Download or read book Disaffections written by Cesare Pavese and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cesare Pavese (1908-1950), one of the great Italian writers of the twentieth century, was a poet, novelist and diarist. Disaffections includes all the poems he wrote during the last two decades of his life, including work originally deleted by the Fascist censors and poems discovered after his death. Pavese was a political and an artistic radical. He was drawn towards American poetry and music, to the people and the idiom of the Blues, to the big-heartedness of Whitman. He evokes the world and the voices of men and women who, as he did, felt torn between the call of city and country, work and repose, desire and solitude. His poems, without ornament or afflatus, focus lyric moments or tell, in longer lines, a story, or invoke an image or a desire. Turin was the wearying world of his working life and Santo Stefano was the small town of childhood holidays and returns. In 1950 he was awarded the Strega Prize. 'The trouble with these things is that they always come when one is already through with them and running after strange, different gods.' Later that year he killed himself.Geoffrey Brock has received several major awards in the United States for his own poetry and for his translations of Italian poetry.
Book Synopsis European Performative Theatre by : Annamaria Cascetta
Download or read book European Performative Theatre written by Annamaria Cascetta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performative theatre is one of the most important trends of our time. It is emblematic of the work of many European theatrical artists in the early twenty-first century. Annamaria Cascetta does not propose a model or a historical overview, but rather strives to identify the salient features of a significant trend in the theatrical research and transformation of our time by analysing some crucial examples from outstanding works, of great international resonance. She draws on work by artists from different generations, all active between the late twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first, and in various European countries, performed in a number of European theatres in recent years. The aim is to apply a method of analysis in depth, bringing out the technical elements of contemporary "performative theatre" in the field, and above all to highlight the close links between it and the urgent and troubled issues and problems of history and society in the phase of cultural and anthropological transition we are experiencing.
