Book excerpt: Set amidst the opulent mansions and cobblestone streets of Old New York, this fifth installment in Rosemary Simpson's acclaimed series brings the Gilded Age to life, as heiress Prudence MacKenzie and ex-Pinkerton Geoffrey Hunter dash down a twisted maze from Fifth Avenue to Five Points in pursuit of stolen diamonds once belonging to Marie Antionette ... Fall 1889: Lady Rotherton has arrived from London intent on chaperoning her niece Prudence through a New York social season to find a suitable husband. It's certainly not her niece's devilishly handsome partner in Hunter and MacKenzie Investigative Law. Aunt Gillian's eye for eligible suitors is surpassed only by her ability to discern genuine gems from nearly flawless fakes. At the Assembly Ball at Delmonico's, she effortlessly determines that the stones in the spectacular diamond waterfall necklace adorning the neck of the wife of banker William De Vries are fake. Insisting on absolute discretion to avoid scandal, the banker employs Prudence and Geoffrey to recover the stolen diamonds pried out of their settings--priceless stones acquired by Tiffany, originally purchased for Marie Antoinette. Their search for a possible fence rapidly leads to a dead end: a jeweler brutally killed in his shop during an apparent theft. The jeweler's murder is only the first in a string of mysterious deaths, as Prudence and Geoffrey pursue their elusive quarry. But the clues keep leading back to duplicity on the part of the De Vries family, who, it turns out, have a great deal to hide...

Book excerpt: One of the greatest works created by any culture and overwhelmingly the most significant of all Tibetan Buddhist texts in the West, The Tibetan Book of the Dead has had a number of distinguished translations, but none encompassed the work in its entirety. Now, in one of the year's most important publishing events, the entire text has not only been made available in English but in a translation of quite remarkable clarity and beauty. With an introductory commentary by His Holiness The Dalai Lama, who calls this translation "an extraordinary accomplishment undertaken with great care over many years" this complete edition faithfully presents the insights and intentions of the original work. It includes one of the most detailed and compelling descriptions of the after-death state in world literature, exquisitely written practices that can transform our experience of daily life, guidance on helping those who are dying, and an inspirational perspective on coping with bereavement. Translated with the close support of leading contemporary masters, including HH Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and learned scholars such as Khamtrul Rinpoche and Zenkar Rinpoche, His Holiness the Dalai Lama says, "I hope that the profound insights contained in this work will be a source of inspiration and support to many interested people around the world."

Book excerpt: A Book Riot Best Book of the Year Goodreads Choice Award Finalist (History/Biography) “It’s Downton Abbey meets The Addams Family in [this] delightfully offbeat history.” —Library Journal At the close of the Victorian era, as now, privacy was power. The extraordinarily wealthy 5th Duke of Portland had a mania for it, hiding in his carriage and building tunnels between buildings to avoid being seen. In 1897, an elderly widow asked the court to exhume the grave of her late father-in-law, T. C. Druce, under the suspicion that he’d led a double life as the 5th Duke. The eccentric duke, Anna Maria contended, had faked his death as Druce, and her son should inherit the Portland millions. Revealing a dark underbelly of Victorian society, Piu Marie Eatwell evokes an era when the rise of sensationalist media blurred every fact into fiction and when family secrets and fluid identities pushed class anxieties to new heights.

Book excerpt: You are born of scam; shall die in scam. Everyone is scamming others. What better expected of the most depraved-dangerous half animal-half human, 7.5-billion strong species? Fear, anger, attitude, denial, deception as proceeds of the scam are the pandemics this species loves. Scared of death, yet trades it most. Reality can de-scam lives. But, who cares? Ignorance is bliss, perfect; till death! Biggest Scam on earth is humanity itself. Every consciousness of every human being is a scam. It had to be as evolution, which designed consciousness, is itself a huge scam. Almost 99.9 percent humans are trapped in the scam. Evolution gifted this exclusivity of complex consciousness in humans but the scammed design made it ride on the brute animalistic body-mind mechanism and processes. A species, born not human but only with potentials as human; positioned over a largely animal system, is the worst scam of cosmos. As half-animal half-human, we are the most split and most conflicted creatures and therefore qualify as the most corrupt and monstrous species in universe. That is why the human world is full of pain, grief, sufferings, devastations et al. The animal instincts of fear, anger, attitude, denial and deception surely cannot create anything better. The only purely human element of compassion is negligible as only a handful out of 7.5 billion people qualifies as humans. The singular solution of scammed humanity is in being human. Only knowledge of reality, in its entirety and holism, can de-scam consciousness and lead the embedded potentials to evolve us as humans. The human world shall always remain a theatre of absurd and insanity if this scam is allowed to not only continue but prosper. The best possible way for an individual to come out of this scam is to understand the scam in details, the fear and denial elements of scammed consciousness, and the core and critical elements of Reality. This eBook shall detail all these. The eBook deconstructs fear, especially the all-pervasive fear of death and unravel the scam of humanity in details so that an individual can de-scam his consciousness and life to construct his or her personal model of lasting peace, sanity, wellness and excellence. The larger humanity is too busy and hugely blissful, enjoying sex, food, moneys, games, commerce, scamming, et al. An individual alone has the possibility to come out of the scam. Welcome!

Book excerpt: The second book in the spine-tingling Dark Matter trilogy. Finding the cause of a deadly epidemic and a cure has never been more urgent--or uncertain. Shay, one of the rare survivors of the epidemic sweeping the UK, has surrendered herself to the Army because she believes she's a carrier of the deadly disease. Along with other survivors, she unwillingly becomes a test subject in an effort to find a cure. When the lab where she's being held is attacked, Shay and a few others escape--with the help of Dr. Alex Cross, Kai's hated stepfather and Callie's father. Alex is the leader of the cult-like group Multiverse. Their agenda is murky, but genetic engineering might be one of their goals. Meanwhile, a heartbroken Kai is determined to find Shay. He's discovered survivors aren't carriers, and Shay sacrificed herself for nothing. Teaming up with other survivors who are being hunted, Kai races to rescue Shay before it's too late. His sister, Callie, the true carrier of the epidemic, continues to hide her secret, and a wave of infection follows in her wake as she travels across the country. As mysteries deepen, the teens must decide whom to trust, and their friendships are tested. Is Callie who she says she is? Should Shay trust the man her mother ran away from--a man Kai hates? Will Kai ever forgive Shay for her betrayal?

Book excerpt: Now a Netflix Documentary What Jennifer Did • A sinister plot by a young woman left her mother dead and her father riddled with bullets. “The book is pure story: chronological, downhill, fast.” — Globe and Mail From the outside looking in, Jennifer Pan seemed like a model daughter living a perfect life. The ideal child, the one her immigrant parents saw, was studying to become a pharmacist at the University of Toronto. But there was a dark, deceptive side to the angelic young woman. In reality, Jennifer spent her days in the arms of her high school sweetheart, Daniel. In an attempt to lead the life she dreamed of, she would do almost anything: lie about her whereabouts, forge school documents, and invent fake jobs and a fictitious apartment. For many years she led this double life. But when her father discovered her web of lies, his ultimatum was severe. And so, too, was her revenge: a plan that culminated in cold-blooded murder. And it almost worked, except for one bad shot. The story of Jennifer Pan is one of all-consuming love and devious betrayal that led to a cold-hearted plan hatched by a group of youths who thought they could pull off the perfect crime. 2017 Arthur Ellis Award, Best Nonfiction Book — Winner

Book excerpt: In Deception and Death, Detective Jack Ireland investigates the brutal murders of two brothers, Peter and Matthew Grayson. While digging for clues and leads in solving this high-profile double homicide, he must thwart off promiscuous advances from his prime suspect. Waiting in the wings is journalist Laurie Bergstrom. She has unraveled a cover-up of devastating proportions. Once again, Jack will be forced to confront his haunting memories of Kirsti's death. One thing is certain: Jack Ireland's life will be permanently altered by the sequence of events in Deception and Death. "Your Eyes Only: Button" ends with Kirsti dead. In "Vengeance, he is still trying to find himself after his wife's tragic death. He takes on a missing person's case, which brings him face-to-face with the father of the serial killers who took Kirsti's life and others who were a fixture in solving this case. My third book brings Kirsti unexpectedly back to life. She's been harbored and hidden away from Jack for a decade. In these three books, the main characters thread through them. One feeds to the next with Jack Ireland as the main character throughout and Kirsti the insinuation. My intention has been to get my readers to feel a connection with the characters, good or bad doesn't matter, just so long as they start to connect with them. You, as my publisher and consultant, cannot do justice to my last without taking a glance at the other two that you did for me because they work together as a continuum. If we are going to present them as a series, than you need to gather the flow and understand it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the leading psychoanalyst Adam Phillips comes Missing Out, a transformative book about the lives we wish we had and what they can teach us about who we are All of us lead two parallel lives: the one we are actively living, and the one we feel we should have had or might yet have. As hard as we try to exist in the moment, the unlived life is an inescapable presence, a shadow at our heels. And this itself can become the story of our lives: an elegy to unmet needs and sacrificed desires. We become haunted by the myth of our own potential, of what we have in ourselves to be or to do. And this can make of our lives a perpetual falling-short. But what happens if we remove the idea of failure from the equation? With his flair for graceful paradox, the acclaimed psychoanalyst Adam Phillips suggests that if we accept frustration as a way of outlining what we really want, satisfaction suddenly becomes possible. To crave a life without frustration is to crave a life without the potential to identify and accomplish our desires. In this elegant, compassionate, and absorbing book, Phillips draws deeply on his own clinical experience as well as on the works of Shakespeare and Freud, of D. W. Winnicott and William James, to suggest that frustration, not getting it, and and getting away with it are all chapters in our unlived lives—and may be essential to the one fully lived.

In Global Healing: Literature, Advocacy, Care, Karen Laura Thornber analyzes how narratives from diverse communities globally engage with a broad variety of diseases and other serious health conditions and advocate for empathic, compassionate, and respectful care that facilitates healing and enables wellbeing. The three parts of this book discuss writings from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania that implore societies to shatter the devastating social stigmas which prevent billions from accessing effective care; to increase the availability of quality person-focused healthcare; and to prioritize partnerships that facilitate healing and enable wellbeing for both patients and loved ones. Thornber’s Global Healing remaps the contours of comparative literature, world literature, the medical humanities, and the health humanities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian tradition has largely held three theological affirmations on the resurrection of the physical body. Firstly, that bodily resurrection is not a superfluous hope of afterlife. Secondly, there is immediate post-mortem existence in Paradise. Finally, there is numerical identity between pre-mortem and post-resurrection human beings. The same tradition also largely adheres to a robust doctrine of The Intermediate State, a paradisiacal disembodied state of existence following the biological death of a human being. This book argues that these positions are in fact internally inconsistent, and so a new theological model for life after death is required. The opening arguments of the book aim to show that The Intermediate State actually undermines the necessity of bodily resurrection. Additionally, substance dualism, a principle The Intermediate State requires, is shown to be equally untenable in this context. In response to this, the metaphysics of the afterlife in Christian theology is re-evaluated, and after investigating physicalist and constitutionist replacements for substance dualist metaphysics, a new theory called "Eschatological Presentism" is put forward. This model combines a broadly Thomistic hylemorphic metaphysics with a novel theory of Time. This is an innovative examination of the doctrine of life after death. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of analytic theology and philosophy of religion.
