Book excerpt: Nothing is quite as it seems in Scott Hudak's twisting new crime novel, Death Cards, where an investigation into a teenager's disappearance reveals that even the simplest of events can cover up a much darker reality. When eighteen-year-old Lauren Shor is abducted on December 16, 1977, the New York City police force plunge into a full scale investigation. But a year passes and there are still no leads, a fact that makes their next discovery so agonizing: One year after the disappearance, the Shor family receives a holiday card from Lauren's abductor. For the next twenty-three years, the "death cards" arrive every Christmas, while Lauren's unsolved case eventually becomes buried, only to land on the desk and into the life of Detective Paula Brocton years later. As Detective Brocton's determination to discover the truth, drives her to dig deeper into the past, secrets slowly reveal themselves-secrets that were meant to stay buried. "There's an absorbing and frightening sense of reality at the heart of this debut novel. Cleverly plotted and convincingly written... Scott Hudak is a real find in the mystery field." -Peter Lovesey, renowned British mystery writer

Book excerpt: Edited by bestselling author George R. R. Martin, in the next Wild Cards adventure we follow John Fortune, son of two of the most powerful and popular Aces the world has ever seen. In Death Draws Five, John Fortune's card has finally turned. He's an Ace! And proud of it . . . except that his new powers put him on a collision course with enemies he never knew he had. Is he the new messiah? Or the Anti-Christ? Or is he just a kid who's in over his head and about to drown? It's really quite simple. Mr. Nobody wants to do his job. The Midnight Angel wants to serve her Lord. Billy Ray, dying from boredom, wants some action. John Nighthawk wants to uncover the awful secret behind his mysterious power. Fortunato wants to rescue his son from the clutches of a cryptic Vatican office. John Fortune just wants to catch Siegfried and Ralph's famous Vegas review. The problem is that all roads, whether they start in Turin, Italy, Las Vegas, Hokkaido, Japan, Jokertown, Snake Hill, the Short Cut, or Yazoo City, Mississippi, lead to Leo Barnett's Peaceable Kingdom, where the difference between the Apocalypse and Peace on Earth is as thin as a razor's edge and where Death himself awaits the final, terrible turn of the card. Book excerpt: A “perfectly executed suspense tale very much in the mode of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca” (The Washington Post) from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Turn of the Key. On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is a “captivating and eerie page-turner” (The Wall Street Journal) from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK Tired, stressed, and in need of more help from your partner? Imagine running your household (and life!) in a new way... It started with the Sh*t I Do List. Tired of being the “shefault” parent responsible for all aspects of her busy household, Eve Rodsky counted up all the unpaid, invisible work she was doing for her family—and then sent that list to her husband, asking for things to change. His response was...underwhelming. Rodsky realized that simply identifying the issue of unequal labor on the home front wasn't enough: She needed a solution to this universal problem. Her sanity, identity, career, and marriage depended on it. The result is Fair Play: a time- and anxiety-saving system that offers couples a completely new way to divvy up domestic responsibilities. Rodsky interviewed more than five hundred men and women from all walks of life to figure out what the invisible work in a family actually entails and how to get it all done efficiently. With 4 easy-to-follow rules, 100 household tasks, and a series of conversation starters for you and your partner, Fair Play helps you prioritize what's important to your family and who should take the lead on every chore, from laundry to homework to dinner. “Winning” this game means rebalancing your home life, reigniting your relationship with your significant other, and reclaiming your Unicorn Space—the time to develop the skills and passions that keep you interested and interesting. Stop drowning in to-dos and lose some of that invisible workload that's pulling you down. Are you ready to try Fair Play? Let's deal you in.

Collated and presented by one of the world's leading historians of Nazi Germany and illustrated with photographs throughout, this book is an accessible, compelling and often revelatory guide to the Third Reich. Ranging from documents and postcards to weapons and personal effects, these objects include Pervitin, Hitler's Mercedes, Hitler's grooming kit, the Messerschmitt 262, the Luger pistol, the Tiger Tank, Eva Braun's lipstick case, the underpants of Rudolf Hess, and, of course, the Swastika and Mein Kampf.

They can finally relax and be married and deal with mundane problems, like money and learning to use all the modern-day technologies that are new to Leliel. But they’re up for the challenge. Until Leliel starts having frightening visions of people on fire. The fires appear to be suicides—young adults—but something isn't right. She senses that they were forced to act against their will. This isn't their time to die. Even though she's no longer a Reaper, she needs to fix it. Somehow. When she and Rick investigate, they encounter resistance from not only the police but also the families and friends of the dead. Complicating factors are the Tarot cards left at the scenes, the mysterious happenings at the college that all of the dead turn out to have attended, and the disturbing new abilities that Rick is developing. And then Leliel's own Tarot deck turns up the Death card--twice--and she realizes that she's gotten the attention of something evil...something she must face without Rick by her side. Meanwhile, the deaths are mounting...

Book excerpt: The public hearings on The Nature of Radioactive Fallout and Its Effects on Man had their origin in studies initiated over a year ago -- in July 1956 -- by the staff of the Joint Committee on the general subject of long-term radiation hazards, both from the military and peacetime atomic energy program. During the summer recess, following the conclusion of the 84th Congress, the staff assembled background materials on fallout, with primary emphasis on the research aspects. Following official announcement of the hearings in March of this year a detailed technical outline describing the proposed scope and subject matter of the hearings was prepared by the staff. On April 18, 1957, a Special Subcommittee on Radiation under the chairmanship of Representative Chet Holifield of California was established to conduct the hearings and to look into radiation problems in general. The hearings, which were all open to the public, were held on May 27-29 and June 3-7, and covered the major aspects of the fallout problem from its inception in nuclear weapons explosions to its effects on man. In all, some 50 witnesses either appeared personally before the committee or submitted statements for the record. The staff has prepared a summary analysis of the hearings which is aimed at pointing up the more significant information which emerged from the hearings. This analysis does not cover all points that were discussed in the hearings. An effort was made to describe the general areas of agreement which developed and to delineate those areas in which unresolved questions still exist. - Foreword.
