Book excerpt: A quaint Vermont inn offers idyllic peace–until a body is found on the property–in this charming series debut, perfect for fans of Ellen Byron and Ellery Adams. When thirty-three-year-old Hannah Solace returns to her hometown to renovate and reopen the inn she co-owns with her sister Reggie, her mission is to give the old Victorian hotel an entirely new life. She’s even planting pollinator gardens around the inn–native flowers and fruit trees to lure honeybees and houseguests alike. Hannah’s fresh start is stymied by Reggie’s continual interference, unreliable contractors, a check-the-couch-for-coins budget, and townspeople Hannah left behind fifteen years ago. Her main source of camaraderie is Ezra Grayson, an eighty-year-old recluse who lives nearby. After an unsettling conversation with a disgruntled Ezra, Hannah is horrified to discover him dead on her property later that day. Ezra had always had plenty of people to complain about, especially locals trying to force him out of his property for its prime real estate. As buzz around town grows after his death, Hannah finds herself on the short list of suspects. Hannah starts digging and quickly discovers that secrets lurk beneath the charming surface of the town she once again calls home.

The dead man, a lawyer, had campaigned against the City granting a permit to make the movie.Jennifer represents the movie people and the City in a lawsuit filed by the dead man's law partner on behalf of his widow and one of his sons. A short time later a young boy is found hanging from a bridge at the pond wearing a devil mask with dead cats hanging on each side of him. Jennifer represents the same parties in a suit filed by the boy's mother who is represented by a lawyer who was also against the movie project and who capitalizes on the deaths in his election campaign to unseat the Mayor. The police have no leads on who caused the deaths or why. Jennifer concludes she'll have to get to the bottom of the deaths to successfully defend her clients. Book excerpt: Based on a true story, this edition of Devil's Knot will tie-in to a major motion picture starring Academy Award winners Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth. This riveting portrait of a small Arkansas town recounts the all-too-true story of a brutal triple murder and the eighteen-year imprisonment of three innocent teenagers. For weeks in 1993, after the grisly murders of three eight-year-old boys, police in West Memphis, Arkansas, seemed stumped. Then suddenly, detectives charged three teenagers - alleged members of a satanic cult - with the killings. Despite the witch-hunt atmosphere of the trials and a case that included stunning investigative blunders, the teenagers, who became known as the West Memphis Three, were convicted. Jurors sentenced Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley to life in prison and Damien Echols, the accused ringleader, to death. The guilty verdicts were popular in their home state - even upheld on appeal - and all three remained in prison until their unprecedented release in August 2011. In Devil's Knot, award-winning investigative journalist Mara Leveritt presents the most comprehensive, insightful reporting ever done on this story - one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in American legal history. In-depth research, meticulous reconstruction of the investigation and close-up views of its key participants unravel the many tangled knots of this endlessly shocking case.

Germain’s father-in-law Maurice decides that two years is long enough to grieve; Germain needs a wife, and his children need a mother. Maurice has investigated, and found what he believes is a suitable match in a neighboring village. He sends Germain off to meet the woman, and on the way drops off a teenage girl at the farm where she has been newly employed. The rest of the novel demonstrates the old aphorism of “the best-laid plans... often go awry.” The Devil’s Pool is the first of four pastoral novels that George Sand originally intended to release together. They were inspired by the community in which she was raised.

Book excerpt: The quatrain in old French written below one of Holbein's pictures is profoundly sad in its simplicity. The engraving represents a ploughman driving his plough through a field. A vast expanse of country stretches away in the distance, with some poor cabins here and there; the sun is setting behind the hill. It is the close of a hard day's work. The peasant is a short, thick-set man, old, and clothed in rags. The four horses that he urges forward are thin and gaunt; the ploughshare is buried in rough, unyielding soil. A single figure is joyous and alert in that scene of sweat and toil. It is a fantastic personage, a skeleton armed with a whip, who runs in the furrow beside the terrified horses and belabors them, thus serving the old husbandman as ploughboy. This spectre, which Holbein has introduced allegorically in the succession of philosophical and religious subjects, at once lugubrious and burlesque, entitled the Dance of Death, is Death itself. In that collection, or rather in that great book, in which Death, playing his part on every page, is the connecting link and the dominant thought, Holbein has marshalled sovereigns, pontiffs, lovers, gamblers, drunkards, nuns, courtesans, brigands, paupers, soldiers, monks, Jews, travellers, the whole world of his day and of ours; and everywhere the spectre of Death mocks and threatens and triumphs. From a single picture only, is it absent. It is that one in which Lazarus, the poor man, lying on a dunghill at the rich man's door, declares that he does not fear Death, doubtless because he has nothing to lose and his life is premature death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brutal Murder The upscale suburb of Wellesley, Massachusetts hadn't seen a murder in 30 years. Then came Halloween, 1999. That brisk morning, Dr. Dirk Greineder, 60, and his wife of 32 years, Mabel, took one of their dogs for a walk in Morses Pond park. A short time later, Dr. Greineder led police to the corpse of his wife. She'd been bludgeoned, stabbed and her throat slashed. Her husband claimed an unknown assailant had committed the act--possibly the same person responsible for two unsolved murders in nearby towns. A Double Life Dirk Greineder was a well-respected allergist whose home was valued at half a million dollars. He and Mabel had raised three children, who had all attended Yale, like their father. But the "good" doctor also indulged in a secret life involving phone sex, Internet porn, and motel trysts with prostitutes. A Family Destroyed A dogged investigation finally yielded enough evidence to lead to Greineder's arrest, and in a six-week trial that would make national headlines, he was supported by his three children, while the dead woman's sister and niece testified for the prosecution. There in the courtroom, a jury would learn the grisly details of cold-blooded murder. . .and the community of Wellesley would learn that you never really know your neighbors. . . 16 Pages Of Shocking Photos

Book excerpt: In the course of its extraordinary history, the Jersey Devil has been exorcised, shot, electrocuted, declared officially dead, and scoffed as foolishness--none of which has had any effect on it or the people who persist in seeing it!This mysterious creature is said to prowl the lonely sand trails and mist-shrouded marshes of the Pine Barrens, and emerge perioducally to rampage through the towns and cities of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, leaving many communities in near-hysteria.The authors show that while a few appearances have been out-right fraud and others have likely been the result of mass hysteria, this creature has been seen by enough sane, sober, and responsible citizens to keep the possiblity of its existence alive and tantalizing.Over 50,000 in print

Illustrating Sand's brevity, liveliness, and exemplary storytelling, the tale deals with many of her characteristic themes—the relations between the sexes, the plight of the underprivileged, and the role of fantasy in human life—making it an ideal introduction to her work. Also included are translations of two of Sand's most admired short stories, "Lavinia" and "The Unknown God," as well as various relevant essays and documents.

Book excerpt: Today is Christmas Eve. Today is my birthday. Today I am fifteen. Today I buried my parents in the backyard. Neither of them were beloved. Marnie and her little sister, Nelly, are on their own now. Only they know what happened to their parents, Izzy and Gene, and they aren't telling. While life in Glasgow's Maryhill housing estate isn't grand, the girls do have each other. Besides, it's only a year until Marnie will be considered an adult and can legally take care of them both. As the New Year comes and goes, Lennie, the old man next door, realizes that his young neighbors are alone and need his help. Or does he need theirs? Lennie takes them in—feeds them, clothes them, protects them—and something like a family forms. But soon enough, the sisters' friends, their teachers, and the authorities start asking tougher questions. As one lie leads to another, dark secrets about the girls' family surface, creating complications that threaten to tear them apart. Written with fierce sympathy and beautiful precision, told in alternating voices, The Death of Bees is an enchanting, grimly comic tale of three lost souls who, unable to answer for themselves, can answer only for one another.

This great French writer was born in Paris in 1804 and passed away in Nohant in 1876. "La Mare au Diable" (The Devil's Pool) is one of her most well-known works. The main character of The Devil's Pool is a widowed farmer who, after the death of his wife, has to raise three young children. Despite his reluctance, he accepts the idea of courting a wealthy widow, Catherine Leonard, in a neighboring region. From there, a plot unfolds that captivates the reader. Deservedly, The Devil's Pool is part of the famous collection: 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.
