Book excerpt: "In White Waters and Black Gordon MacCreagh, with a wicked eye for absurdities, recounts his adventures with eight "Eminent Scientificos" as they set out to explore the Amazon in 1923 without any idea of what lies ahead of them: rapids, malaria, monkey stew, and "dangerous savages." A combination of Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad and a cautionary tale for explorers, this is one of the most honest accounts ever written of a scientific expedition."

Book Synopsis Dishing with Style by : Rori Trovato
Download or read book Dishing with Style written by Rori Trovato and published by Three Rivers Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you can combine great taste with beautiful presentation, well, that's when you captivate family and guests. And coming up with creative and clever styling and entertaining ideas as well as delicious food is what Rori Trovato has been doing in the pages of national magazines for years. Now she shares her secrets in DISHING WITH STYLE. The basic conceit of the book is so simple: share a great recipe and show two different ways of presenting it But it's the execu- tion that counts and Rori's ideas are just delightful. She starts with drinks (isn't the cocktail party the most basic form of enter- taining?) and offers a host of ideas. The dusting of cinnamon on those chubby marshmallows in the hot chocolate does make a difference in appearance, but why not go elegant, and serve cocoa in an oversized brandy snifter on a Tiffany blue napkin and truly delight your guests? Limeade in a glass? Sure, but why not in hollowed-out lime shells, set into a bed of ice? Rori takes us through hors d'oeuvre, starters and first courses, main courses, side dishes, and desserts, offering spectacular ideas all along the way. Delicious salads that look equally beautiful plated or presented family style. Butter-roasted chicken is presented classically, heaped with herbs and vegetables to be carved at table, but Rori then shows readers how to adapt the recipe to game hens a forest of little legs and wings that guests can help themselves to. DISHING WITH STYLE is packed with secrets that only a stylist can share. How do you get that neat mound of spaghetti in the center of the plate? What's the best way to get clean wedges of cheesecake onto a dessert plate? How do you choose fruits and herbs and vegetables to make your food look as good as that in a magazine. Rori answers all this and more.

Book Synopsis The Ik language by : Terrill B. Schrock
Download or read book The Ik language written by Terrill B. Schrock and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a dictionary and grammar sketch of Ik, one of the three Kuliak (Rub) languages spoken in the beautiful Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda. It is the lexicographic sequel to \textit{A grammar of Ik (Icé-tód): Northeast Uganda’s last thriving Kuliak language} (Schrock 2014). The present volume includes an Ik-English dictionary with roughly 8,700 entries, followed by a reversed English-Ik index. These two main sections are then supplemented with an outline of Ik grammar that is comprehensive in its coverage of topics and written in a simple style, using standard linguistic terminology in a way that is accessible to interested non-linguists as well. This book may prove useful for language preservation and development among the Ik people, as a reference tool for non-Ik learners of the language, and as a source of data, not only for the comparative study of Kuliak but also the wider Afroasiatic and Nilo-Saharan language families.

Book excerpt: This book traces the development of English slang from the earliest records to the latest tweet. It explores why and how slang is used, and traces the development of slang in English-speaking nations around the world. The records of the Old Bailey and machine-searchable newspaper collections provide a wealth of new information about historical slang, while blogs and tweets provide us with a completely new perspective on contemporary slang. Based on inside information from real live slang users as well as the best scholarly sources, this book is guaranteed to teach you some new words that you shouldn't use in polite company. Teachers, politicians, broadcasters, and parents characterize the language of teenagers as sloppy, repetitive, and unintelligent, but these complaints are nothing new. In 1906, an Australian journalist overheard some youths on a street-corner: Things will be bally slow till next pay-day. I've done in nearly all my spond. Here, now; cheese it, or I'll lob one in your lug. Lend us a cigarette. Lend it; oh, no, I don't part. Look out, here's a bobby going to tell us to shove along. What, he wondered, was the world coming to. For the 411, read on ...
