Book Synopsis Letters of John Calvin by : John Calvin
Download or read book Letters of John Calvin written by John Calvin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 1902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This English edition of the epistolary writings of Calvin, complete in four volumes, contains six hundred sixty-eight letters, last discourses, and an appendix of eighteen additional letters. The letters here are selected from the Paris edition, which embraces the originals of all that are extant, and represent our most complete English edition of Calvin's letters. The industry of Calvin and the reach of his power, as disclosed in these products of his pen, are well sketched in a few lines of the preface. ÒInvested, in virtue of his surpassing genius, with an almost universal apostolate, he wielded an influence as varied and as plastic as his activity. He exhorts with the same authority the humble ministers of the Gospel and the powerful monarchs of England, Sweden, and Poland. He holds communion with Luther and Melanchthon, animates Knox, encourages Coligny, Conde, Jeanne d'Albret, and the Duchess of Ferrara; while in his familiar letters to Farel, Viret, and Theodore Beza, he pours out the overflowings of a heart filled with the deepest and most acute sensibility.
Book Synopsis The Life Writings of Mary Baker McQuesten by : Mary J. Anderson
Download or read book The Life Writings of Mary Baker McQuesten written by Mary J. Anderson and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a privileged Victorian matron, newly widowed and newly impoverished, manage to raise and educate her six young children and restore her family to social prominence? Mary Baker McQuesten’s personal letters, 155 of which were carefully selected by Mary J. Anderson, tell the story. In her uninhibited style, in letters mostly to her children, Mary Baker McQuesten chronicles her financial struggles and her expectations. The letters reveal her forthright opinions on a broad range of topics — politics, religion, literature, social sciences, and even local gossip. We learn how Mary assessed each of her children’s strengths and weaknesses, and directed each of their lives for the good of the family. For example, she sent her daughter Ruby out to teach, so she could send her earnings home to educate Thomas, the son Mary felt was most likely to succeed. And succeed he did, as a lawyer and mpp, helping to build many of Hamilton’s and Ontario’s highways, bridges, parks, and heritage sites, and in doing so, bringing the family back to social prominence. Mary Baker McQuesten was also president of the Women’s Missionary Society. The appearance, manner, and eloquence of various ministers and politicians all come under her uninhibited scrutiny, providing lively insights into the Victorian moral and social motivations of both men and women and about the gender conflicts that occurred both at home and abroad. This book will satisfy many readers. Those interested in the drama of Victorian society will enjoy the images of the stern Presbyterian matriarch, the sacrificed female, family mental illness, the unresolved death of a husband, and the dangers of social stigma. Scholars looking for research material will find an abundance in the letters, well annotated with details of the surrounding political, social, and current events of the times.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER One of NPR's "Books We Love" of 2021 Longlisted for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography Winner of the Christopher Award “Masterly. An epic story of four Japanese-American families and their sons who volunteered for military service and displayed uncommon heroism… Propulsive and gripping, in part because of Mr. Brown’s ability to make us care deeply about the fates of these individual soldiers...a page-turner.” – Wall Street Journal From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Boys in the Boat, a gripping World War II saga of patriotism and resistance, focusing on four Japanese American men and their families, and the contributions and sacrifices that they made for the sake of the nation. In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil. Woven throughout is the chronicle of Gordon Hirabayashi, one of a cadre of patriotic resisters who stood up against their government in defense of their own rights. Whether fighting on battlefields or in courtrooms, these were Americans under unprecedented strain, doing what Americans do best—striving, resisting, pushing back, rising up, standing on principle, laying down their lives, and enduring.
Book Synopsis Calvin Stewart, P.I. by : Dan Parker
Download or read book Calvin Stewart, P.I. written by Dan Parker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author worked steadily in Hollywood from 1991-2003 as a writers' and producer's assistant, switchboard operator, casting receptionist, executive secretary, hardware lease administrator, newsletter writer, and website creator, very often while "floating" serving as a "temp" secretary or assistant in Production or Administration. While she hardly set Hollywood on fire (in a high-profile way), she achieved goals through dogged determination, a wildly contagious sense of the absurd, and lots of hard work. If your dreams include working in Hollywood, this book reveals one laugh-a-minute avenue for getting your foot in the door, and provides ample evidence that you don't have to be perfect (by a long shot) to be valued in -- and valuable to -- the entertainment industry.

Book Synopsis History of the Reformation in the Time of Calvin by : Merle D'Aubigne, J. H.
Download or read book History of the Reformation in the Time of Calvin written by Merle D'Aubigne, J. H. and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 2470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merle D’Aubigne published two series of historical works for which he is most famous. The first was The History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century, a five volume set containing twenty books and covering every country in Europe and every major figure of that time. He stated, “I believe that the Reformation is a work of God; this must have been already seen. Still, I hope to be impartial in tracing its history. Of the principal Roman Catholic actors in this great drama, for example, of Leo X, Albert of Magdeburg, Charles V, and Doctor Eck—I believe I have spoken more favourably than the greater part of historians have done.” The second series was The History of The Reformation in the Times of Calvin and was originally published as sixteen books bound in eight volumes. Each volume was published and released as the author completed the books which were contained in that volume. Therefore, each volume (with the exclusion of volume 2) has its own introduction. The volumes were broken down thusly: Volume 1 contained Book 1 and part of 2, Volume 2 contained the remainder of book 2 and all of book 3, Volume 3 contained books 4 and 5, Volume 4 contained books 6 and 7, Volume 5 contained books 8 and 9, Volume 6 contained book 10 and part of 11, Volume 7 contained the remainder of book 11 and all of books 12 and 13, and Volume 8 contained books 14, 15, and 16.
