Download or read book The 7 Deadly Sins of Investing written by Maury Fertig and published by Amacom Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Are you a sinner when it comes to investing? During his long and successful career at Salomon Brothers, Maury Fertig witnessed many smart people making very bad investment decisions -- all because they let their emotions influence their judgment. He realized that whether the result of ego, competitiveness, or just plain laziness, these dire behaviors were rooted in seven common and recognizable human weaknesses: * Envy: focusing on the success of others * Vanity, or Pride: an unwillingness to take advice * Lust: an infatuation with an investment, despite warnings that it is not sound * Avarice: a tendency to hold onto a stock for too long, decreasing its return * Anger, or Wrath: irrational behavior that sacrifices steady progress for a quick hit * Gluttony: compulsive and excessive investing * Sloth: ignoring finances altogether The Seven Deadly Sins of Investing helps readers recognize their investing vices, and offers practical strategies to help them correct the error of their ways. Illustrated by real stories about real investors who have given in to temptation, the book provides solid financial advice for avoiding common pitfalls and staying on the path to "salvation" -- and wealth."

Book Synopsis Postmodern Portfolio Theory by : James Ming Chen
Download or read book Postmodern Portfolio Theory written by James Ming Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of portfolio theory, from its modern origins through more sophisticated, “postmodern” incarnations, evaluates portfolio risk according to the first four moments of any statistical distribution: mean, variance, skewness, and excess kurtosis. In pursuit of financial models that more accurately describe abnormal markets and investor psychology, this book bifurcates beta on either side of mean returns. It then evaluates this traditional risk measure according to its relative volatility and correlation components. After specifying a four-moment capital asset pricing model, this book devotes special attention to measures of market risk in global banking regulation. Despite the deficiencies of modern portfolio theory, contemporary finance continues to rest on mean-variance optimization and the two-moment capital asset pricing model. The term postmodern portfolio theory captures many of the advances in financial learning since the original articulation of modern portfolio theory. A comprehensive approach to financial risk management must address all aspects of portfolio theory, from the beautiful symmetries of modern portfolio theory to the disturbing behavioral insights and the vastly expanded mathematical arsenal of the postmodern critique. Mastery of postmodern portfolio theory’s quantitative tools and behavioral insights holds the key to the efficient frontier of risk management.
Book Synopsis The Overparenting Solution by : George S. Glass
Download or read book The Overparenting Solution written by George S. Glass and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features pragmatic, reasonable advice for how parents can raise their children effectively and lovingly without overdoing it. Today, in the world of Covid-19, parents may be more anxious than ever as they aim to make sense of the changing landscape of education. We see now that within the context of social distancing, which we may be facing for quite some time, families are experiencing a mix of positive and negative influences, including new stressors, which cause division and even danger, while at the same time, some families are discovering novel ways of remaining blended together. Regardless, families must find their way forward to overcome bad decisions and embrace these challenging circumstances. The generational desire of parents to want their children to have more opportunity and success than they did has become outdated for many families, especially those of means, but this has not stopped parents from going too far with their children, from pushing them into needless high-pressure situations to protecting them from any possible failure or disappointment. While we know that it is getting harder and harder to get into a select college, and after graduation, it is often more difficult to find a “prestigious” job, parents are not doing their kids any favors by resorting to any means necessary to ensure what they define as their offspring’s success. This work shows readers how to parent better, not more, allowing children to make their own mistakes and learn from them, and grow into functioning, self-reliant adults.
