Book excerpt: Were it not for the online match-making site we visited, my wife Auren and I would have never met. I lived in a large house on a man-made lake in Scottsdale. She lived some forty miles away high up in the mountains of Superior, AZ. She was busy, raising a daughter, working in a doctor''s office, taking college courses online, and transcribing medical records at night. Initially, we emailed and telephoned...fluid, but brief. She quickly dismissed me when she realized I was fourteen years her senior. Undaunted, I composed and sent a poem to her, effecting that as an attorney, I had often found myself appealing for a second chance. Might we continue talking and then meet at some point? Yes...she said. It was a late morning in June when she climbed aboard my Jaguar convertible with what appeared to be a degree of anticipation. The morning was crisp, cool, and sunny. Birds filled the trees and chirped as if they were hired to sing for the occasion, this our first meeting. Cold dry air blew out from the Jag''s vents. You just couldn''t help but feel good in the Jag. We went to lunch and followed that with a trip across town to look at antiques. As we kept up the chit-chat, she became more animated, open, giving every indication that she seemed to be having fun. Our chemistry was building and rightfully so. Were we going to be good together right out of the box? At my place that evening, I cooked her a dinner of pasta with white sauce and halibut. Later into the night, outside by the pool, we slowly danced to Frank while holding each other closely. She was thin and I liked her style of thin. She fit closely to me while held in my arms. The air seemed lightly scented in our favor. I asked that she not make the long drive home. That night in bed, we both felt shy, (especially me) while we held each other and talked, caressed, and kissed. Our conversation came easily...we talked of love, of past disappointments of love and the promises of new love. And we kissed...tenderly and lovingly, a respite lasting for more than an hour. Then, we were like spoons in a drawer when I first struggled inside her tight little body, gently pushing all the way inside. She repeatedly gasped. Ultimately, familiar rhythms were born as we made love. In the early morning, we made love again in active, sexually mutual exchanges...the beginnings of a true love? When we kissed...she kissed me passionately, like a wife who deeply in love might kiss her husband before sending him off to war. Later that same morning I asked her, might we find a way to make it work? Yes...she whispered to me softly. We quickly married. Soon...there was talk of a baby. To have a child with her would not be much of a stretch for me. I had been a very active parent with my kids. I was a good father. So...she and I made the most wonderful little baby boy ever. But after our little son was born, she ultimately, unconscious or not, determined that he was her everything...and I, her husband and his father, started to become no more than an unwanted and unnecessary circumstance. Our relationship changed: with her focus now solely on our beautiful little Jett. He and his safety and happiness took over - or so she rationalized. Our marriage fell apart. I wanted to be even closer to her - she said she couldn''t. I found the burden of unrequited love quite heavy. If I could not have a fulfilling relationship with my wife and we were to divorce, I would insist upon an equal amount of independent time with my beautiful son - something I never had - and the one thing she would never give up. Auren has had him exclusively for 5 years. In all practicality, I am dead to him, bit by her, the black widow...left to be gobbled up by the legal system. She sent me to jail. Jail nearly killed me and ruined my air ambulance business. I had hoped she would recognize that my being jailed would not help. She wasn''t. And she forgot our promise - be kind to each other as we split up.

Book excerpt: The Deadly Groom is the compelling true crime saga of the slaying of Marcia Good, a vivacious 40-year-old widowed mother of three, by her second husband, Richard Bennett, who viewed her modest estate as a cash cow. At first, Bennett was able to convince authorities and even Marcia's relatives that her drowning death was a tragic fishing accident in a fall from a partially built bridge over the Arkansas River on a cold, windy, rainy night. It would be another 17 years before her case was closed officially when Bennett died in prison while serving a life sentence for first degree murder. He might have gotten away completely without the efforts of Marcia's brother-in-law, Dr. Lowell Good, who hired his own investigators, and her nephew, David Zoll, who successfully fought a civil wrongful death suit against Bennett. It also took the tenacious work of Arkansas State Police Investigator Doug Stephens, who worked with Dr. Good and Zoll, and compiled the evidence that finally resulted in successful criminal prosecution. Even at that, it took three murder convictions before Bennett went to prison because the Arkansas Supreme Court reversed the first two jury verdicts.

Former reporter Ali Reynolds finds herself working against the police to add up the clues that connect one frightened teenager, two dead bodies, and $300,000...with the body count rising. Hired to investigate the grisly murder of a gold-digging divorcée on behalf of the woman accused of the crime, Ali Reynolds is immediately drawn to the case of the secretive teenager who found the body. A. J. Sanders was in the Camp Verde desert to retrieve a mystery box buried by his absent father—a box that turns out to be filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of poker chips. When a second body is found in the desert, it seems the three cases are more closely related than anyone could have imagined. Though Ali’s friends in the police department grow increasingly irritated by her involvement, Ali must stop a ruthless killer from claiming another victim...before she is lost in this game of deadly stakes.

Book excerpt: Were it not for the online match-making sites we visited, my wife Auren and I would have never met. It was an impossibility that we would have ever met through friends or by chance. I lived in a large house on a man-made lake in the very toney town of Scottsdale, Arizona. My home had been a model home and my garage had limo-tinted dark glass walls as it had been the sales office in what was back then a new housing development, now mature. Auren lived some forty miles away east in the mountains, in the beautiful little town of Superior with her daughter (an eight-year-old little terrorist); the two of them lived together more like roommates than mother and daughter. The Terrorist alone would have been more than enough to scare off any of her mother's suitors. At the time of our first communications, Auren was very busy, working in a doctor's office, taking college courses online, and transcribing medical records at night. Initially, we emailed and telephoned...fluid, but brief. She quickly dismissed me when she realized I was fourteen years her senior. Undaunted, I composed and sent a long poem to her, effecting that as an attorney, I had often found myself appealing for a second chance. Might we continue talking and then meet at some point? Birds filled the trees and chirped as if they were hired to sing for the occasion, this our first meeting. The Jag was a special two-seat ride with limo-tinted dark windows and a tight tan leather interior with white piping around the seats. Cold dry air blew out from the Jag's vents. You just couldn't help but feel good in the Jag. We went to lunch at a Scottsdale outdoor-garden restaurant and followed that with a trip across town to Chandler to look at antiques. As we kept up the chit-chat, Auren became more animated, open, giving every indication that she seemed to be having fun. During our wanderings, I reached out a couple of times, lightly drawing my fingers across her lower back. I got the impression that she felt my gesture as special, a connection...one without comment. It was. When we kissed...she kissed me passionately, like a wife who deeply in love might kiss her husband. Later that same morning I asked her, might we find a way to make it work? Yes...she whispered to me softly. She was petite with thick brown hair, and a Kansas-prairie kind of thin, long nose. Of course, she looked much younger than me, even younger than she was. As she walked towards me that first late morning in June, I told myself that, notwithstanding our only slight telephonic familiarity, I would have and cherish her from that moment forward...if she would have me.
