Book excerpt: Packed with exploits in the forest and on the waterways of colonial America, this is the story of Henry de Tonti, French explorer and pioneer of the Mississippi river. His story has been somewhat lost to history, sitting in the shadows of his friend and commandant, the explorer La Salle. But his accomplishments are just as noteworthy, his bravery just as commendable, and his perseverance just as admirable. The best years of de Tonti's life were given to the exploration and navigation of the that great inland waterway. In 1682 he accompanied La Salle on his voyage of discovery to the river's mouth on the Gulf of Mexico. After the death of La Salle, he continued these explorations and later aided Pierre Le Moyne to build Fort Mobile, the first fortified French garrison and settlement on the Gulf. He was also instrumental in founding the first white settlement west of the Mississippi in Arkansas as well as the city of St. Louis, Missouri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through more than two hundred stunning photographs, The Mississippi Gulf Coast illustrates what visitors and residents alike love about the region—the sunrises and sunsets; the distinctive character of each town along the waterfront; the historic places; the traditional coast cuisine; and the arts, gaming, and watersports. Passing from the western part of the coast to the east, The Mississippi Gulf Coast will refamiliarize some and introduce others to the Coast of Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, D’Iberville, Ocean Springs, Gautier, Pascagoula, and Moss Point. Through words and images, photographer Timothy T. Isbell provides a brief history of the area, from the first settlers to the waves of immigrants who have helped shape the character and culture of the region, and a reflection of the current state of the Gulf Coast. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has spent more than a decade recovering from the ruin left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. During the earliest days following the storm, Isbell was sent out to document the grim aftermath of Katrina. Seeing damage everywhere, he became overwhelmed by the destruction surrounding him and soon wanted to see images of hope and recovery. It was at that point he made a promise to show the “true Mississippi Gulf Coast,” an area known for its natural beauty and spirit. The beautiful photographs in The Mississippi Gulf Coast are a testament to renewal in the face of adversity.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, highly readable reference This is an authoritative, one-stop resource for essential information on the exploration of North America, from alleged pre-Columbian explorers to polar expeditions in the twentieth century. Completely up-to-date in content and historical approach, the book is divided into seven sections, each covering a major area of exploration. Vivid, narrative entries bring to life early expeditions (e.g., African and Scandinavian voyages, real and apocryphal), voyages of European explorers, Western expeditions, and explorations of the Arctic. From the Atlantic seaboard to the Appalachians to the Mississippi to the northernmost regions, readers will discover the Native nations, geographical features, private and governmental institutions, and settlements that played a role in the history of exploring the continent. Maps, photos, and sidebars with lively first-person accounts from contemporary diaries, reports, and news accounts round out this thorough examination of the numerous adventures taken around the continent. Michael Golay has published five books on American history, including most recently The Ruined Land. He lives in Exeter, New Hampshire. John Bowman is the Editor of the Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography and numerous other reference works. He lives in Northampton, Massachusetts.
