Book Synopsis Science Translated by : Michèle Goyens
Download or read book Science Translated written by Michèle Goyens and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediaevalia Lovaniensia 40Medieval translators played an important role in the development and evolution of a scientific lexicon. At a time when most scholars deferred to authority, the translations of canonical texts assumed great importance. Moreover, translation occurred at two levels in the Middle Ages. First, Greek or Arabic texts were translated into the learned language, Latin. Second, Latin texts became source texts themselves, to be translated into the vernaculars as their importance across Europe started to increase. The situation of the respective translators at these two levels was fundamentally different: whereas the former could rely on a long tradition of scientific discourse, the latter had the enormous responsibility of actually developing a scientific vocabulary. The contributions in the present volume investigate both levels, greatly illuminating the emergence of the scientific terminology and concepts that became so fundamental in early modern intellectual discourse. The scientific disciplines covered in the book include, among others, medicine, biology, astronomy, and physics.
Book Synopsis Inventarium sive Chirurgia Magna, Volume 1 Text by : Michael R. McVaugh
Download or read book Inventarium sive Chirurgia Magna, Volume 1 Text written by Michael R. McVaugh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of these volumes offers a text of the last and greatest surgical encyclopedia of the Middle Ages (1363); the second analyzes its construction from earlier sources. The text itself covers anatomy and the treatment of wounds, ulcers, fractures, dislocations, and a variety of other conditions and diseases, including not just surgical but medical procedures, which it discusses within a broad framework of medical (physiological and pathological) learning. In the commentary volume, the author's more than 3000 references to older medical authorities are traced to their sources and their use is discussed. Together, the volumes illuminate the culmination of medieval surgery and its techniques in an academic setting and furnish a kind of chrestomathy of the whole range of literature known and cited in medieval medical faculties.
Book Synopsis Galen and Galenism by : Luis García-Ballester
Download or read book Galen and Galenism written by Luis García-Ballester and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galenism, a rational, coherent medical system embracing all health and disease related matters, was the dominant medical doctrine in the Latin West during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Deriving from the medical and philosophical views of Galen (129-c.210/6) as well as from his clinical practice, Latin Galenism had its origins in 12th-century Salerno and was constructed from the cultural exchanges between the Arabic and Christian worlds. It flourished all over Europe, following the patterns of expansion of the university system during the subsequent centuries and was a major factor in shaping the healing systems of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities - the subject of a previous volume by Professor García-Ballester. The present collection deals with a wide array of issues regarding the historical Galen and late medieval and Renaissance Galenism, but focuses in particular on the relationship between theory and practice. It includes first English versions of two major studies originally published in Spanish.

Download or read book The Art of Medicine written by O'Boyle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the author contributes to our understanding of the formation of medicine as a university discipline by explaining how a collection of medical works known as the Ars medicine ("The Art of Medicine") came to form the basis of medical teaching in the early universities. Based upon extensive manuscript research, this study explains how the collection evolved to suit the needs of university medical teaching and how it helped to establish Hippocratic-Galenic medicine as the new medical othodoxy. Focusing upon the medical faculty at the University of Paris, the book investigates how medical texts were produced, who owned them and how they were used in the classroom. It thus explains how language was used, how textual authority was created and utilized, and how text-based knowledge was sanctioned in the classroom.

Book Synopsis Canonical Medicine by : Roger French
Download or read book Canonical Medicine written by Roger French and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the work of one of the most famous medical scholars of the middle ages, renowned to his contemporaries as being able to see more deeply into the theory of medicine than anyone else. It is based in particular on an analysis of his huge commentary on Avicenna's Canon, the biggest and most important single medical text of the Middle Ages. This is the first modern analysis of the commentary, and while the size and elaborate scholastic structure of it has deterred historians, it remained an important text for two centuries. This book explains the nature and purposes of medical scholasticism, which reached its height in the half century before the Black Death, in which Gentile died.
