Download or read book Michel de Certeau written by Jeremy Ahearne and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his death in 1986, Michel de Certeau's reputation as athinker has steadily grown both in France and throughout theEnglish-speaking world. His work is extraordinarily innovative andwide-ranging, cutting across issues in historiography, literary andcultural studies, anthropology, sociology, theology, philosophy andpsychoanalysis. This book represents the first full-length study of Certeau'sthought. It is organized around the central theme of interpretationand alterity, which Ahearne uses to illuminate Certeau's work as awhole. The author also examines Certeau's theory and practice ofhistoriography; his reflection on the relations between changinghistorical forms of writing, reading and orality; and hisdistinction between the "strategic" programmes of the politicallypowerful and the "tactics" of the relatively powerless. Ahearne places Certeau's work in its general intellectual context, relating it to the views of important contemporary thinkers, suchas Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault, and demonstrating thedecisive importance to Certeau's thought of the writings of theearly modern mystics and travellers. This book constitutes an excellent critical introduction toCerteau's work, while also providing a comprehensive and nuancedreading for those already familiar with his thought.
Book Synopsis Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Biblical Tradition by : Florentino García Martínez
Download or read book Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Biblical Tradition written by Florentino García Martínez and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains the papers read at the 51st Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (July 31 - August 2, 2002) dedicated to the study of the theme of Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the biblical tradition in general. The "Main papers" and some of the "Offered papers" have been thematically grouped in four parts. Part I comprises four articles dealing with the relationship between wisdom and apocalypticism in the Scrolls compared to the biblical tradition. Part II includes five papers which focus on specific wisdom compositions from Qumran, such as 1Q/4QMysteries, 4QInstruction, 4QTime of Righteousness, or the "Tractate of the Two Spirits" from the Rule of the Community. The nine contributions of Part III analyse different aspects of biblical Wisdom compositions (in Qohelet, Sirach, and the Wisdom of Solomon) or of apocalyptic writings (in 1 Enoch and 4 Ezra) in the light of the Qumran Wisdom texts. Part IV groups six studies on several aspects of the Wisdom compositions from Qumran (messianic ideas, ecstatic worship, the beatitudes, or the fate of the righteous) which are directly relevant for the study of the New Testament. The articles are written in English (14), French (6), and German (4). Among the contributors are specialists of the Dead Sea Scrolls (Jean Duhaime, Torleif Elgvin, Armin Lange, Hermann Lichtenberger, Emile Puech, Eibert Tigchelaar) and of Early Judaism (e.g., John J. Collins, Daniel Harrington, Michael Knibb), as well as Old Testament scholars (e.g., Hainz-Josef Fabry, Maurice Gilbert, Klaus Koch).

This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this study “History in the text” is an oxymoronic phrase, and by this, the main focus of the book is clear immediately. On the other hand, there still remains the question to what extent text and history are comparable. The author of this volume tries to answer this by discussing the famous novel of Victor Hugo Quatrevingt-Treize against the background of the French Revolution.

Book Synopsis Poetry and Revelation by : Kevin Hart
Download or read book Poetry and Revelation written by Kevin Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious poetry has often been regarded as minor poetry and dismissed in large part because poetry is taken to require direct experience; whereas religious poetry is taken to be based on faith, that is, on second or third hand experience. The best methods of thinking about "experience" are given to us by phenomenology. Poetry and Revelation is the first study of religious poetry through a phenomenological lens, one that works with the distinction between manifestation (in which everything is made manifest) and revelation (in which the mystery is re-veiled as well as revealed). Providing a phenomenological investigation of a wide range of “religious poems”, some medieval, some modern; some written in English, others written in European languages; some from America, some from Britain, and some from Australia, Kevin Hart provides a unique new way of thinking about religious poetry and the nature of revelation itself.

Book Synopsis L’Hymnaire manichéen chinois Xiabuzan 下部讚 à l’usage des Auditeurs by : Lucie Rault
Download or read book L’Hymnaire manichéen chinois Xiabuzan 下部讚 à l’usage des Auditeurs written by Lucie Rault and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. L’Hymnaire manichéen chinois presents a collection of twenty-five hymns that were intended for the Manichean religious practice of the class of Auditors. The scroll, which came to light in the early twentieth century in the province of Dunhuang (modern Ganzu) after lying buried for around twelve centuries, contains several hymns transcribed from a variety of languages that were current in Central Asia during the epoch of its redaction. This translation provides a new perspective on the Religion of Light as it was adopted in China, and on the wide reach of the message of the Iranian prophet Mani (216-276) that aimed at universal scope and was meant to unite people from all parts of the world, of whatever origin, language and history.
Book Synopsis Franco-America in the Making by : Jonathan K. Gosnell
Download or read book Franco-America in the Making written by Jonathan K. Gosnell and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every June the city of Lowell, Massachusetts, celebrates Franco-American Day, raising the Franco-American flag and hosting events designed to commemorate French culture in the Americas. Though there are twenty million French speakers and people of French or francophone descent in North America, making them the fifth-largest ethnic group in the United States, their cultural legacy has remained nearly invisible. Events like Franco-American Day, however, attest to French ethnic permanence on the American topography. In Franco-America in the Making, Jonathan K. Gosnell examines the manifestation and persistence of hybrid Franco-American literary, musical, culinary, and media cultures in North America, especially New England and southern Louisiana. To shed light on the French cultural legacy in North America long after the formal end of the French empire in the mid-eighteenth century, Gosnell seeks out hidden French or "Franco" identities and sites of memory in the United States and Canada that quietly proclaim an intercontinental French presence, examining institutions of higher learning, literature, folklore, newspapers, women's organizations, and churches. This study situates Franco-American cultures within the new and evolving field of postcolonial Francophone studies by exploring the story of the peoples and ideas contributing to the evolution and articulation of a Franco-American cultural identity in the New World. Gosnell asks what it means to be French, not simply in America but of America.
