Book Synopsis Internal Fixation of Small Fractures by : Urs Heim
Download or read book Internal Fixation of Small Fractures written by Urs Heim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second English-language edition of the Small Fragment Set Manual was enthusiastically received and quickly went into a second printing. In preparing a third edition, we found it necessary to revise the text extensively and partly restructure it. The reasons for this are numerous. Experience of recent years has brought technical refinements in the operative treatment of many types of small fracture. Many of these changes stem from the small-fragment-set training programs conducted in Switzerland since 1980, and also from courses and symposia that have been held in other European countries and the United States. These events were occasions for a fruitful ex change of experience with surgeons who were critical of our methods. As a result of this exchange, we perceived a need both to revise our indications and to give greater attention to alternative techniques. We also felt it necessary to respond to criticisms of the first two editions concerning the catalog-like instrument lists and illustrations, and the attention given to fundamental techniques. Many surgeons who work or would like to work with small implants, especially those practicing abroad, are inexperienced in operations on the larger bones. It is imperative that these colleagues be given a basic introduction to the "biomechanical thinking" of the Swiss Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF).

Download or read book Pediatric Orthopedic Deformities, Volume 1 written by Frederic Shapiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental biology of normal bone and cartilage including histogenesis, molecular/gene and biomechanical aspects is updated and expanded. The book outlines the biology of: bone repair with differing mechanical environments; cartilage repair at articular and physeal sites; and distraction osteogenesis. The generously illustrated text provides an in-depth presentation of the interplay between normal developmental biology, abnormal pathologic states and the influence of operative and non-operative orthopedic interventions on childhood orthopedic deformity. Thirty-four principles underlying the development, progression and management of skeletal deformity in the growing child are defined. Orthopedic management including surgical treatment is discussed for: skeletal dysplasias; epiphyseal growth plate fracture-separations; lower extremity length discrepancies; and deformities of joints and epiphyses due to metabolic, inflammatory, infectious, hematologic, and neoplastic disorders. Treatments are related to extent of deformity, remodeling post-surgery and possible recurrence. This 2nd edition of Pediatric Orthopedic Deformities has been expanded to cover more regions and disorders and is being presented in 3 volumes.

Book Synopsis Medical Practice Variations by : Ana Johnson
Download or read book Medical Practice Variations written by Ana Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title deals with internationally documented variations in medical practice and health service that exist across countries as well as regions across a specific country. Such variations raise critical concerns about the quality, equity and efficiency of health care resources across the world. Health services researchers have long been aware of large variations in the use of medical care across regions and medical providers. In the 1930s, the British pediatrician J.A. Glover observed that the rates of tonsillectomy in British schoolchildren varied widely, depending on the district where the students lived and the doctors who examined them. This volume provides a contextual landscape for the study of health care utilization through the lens of medical practice variations. It is grounded in the pioneering work by medical care epidemiologist, Dr. John Wennberg, who revealed wide variations in elective surgical rates across small areas in the U.S. and his findings that these variations were generally not explained by differences in population illness rates or patient preferences but rather, there were strong associations between supply of health care resources, such as hospital beds and physicians and health care utilization. This volume introduces the concept of medical practice variations and its early history, outlines established concepts and frameworks, with an overview of methods used to understand the variations in medical care . It makes the case for outcomes research in determining what works in health care and policy reforms to rationalize how care is delivered. Each chapter synthesizes the current published literature in the field and covers a description of medical practice variations in the area, determinants of these variations and outcomes. It outlines the most current research on specific types of utilization such as inpatient care, emergency services, elective surgery, primary care, obstetric and gynaec ological care, mental health care and end-of-life care, among others. Studies of variation in condition-specific care focus on common conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, stroke, diabetes and procedures such as cancer surgery and joint replacement. Special topics include health care spending and quality, shared decision making and disparities.
Book Synopsis New Developments in Lipid-Protein Interactions and Receptor Function by : K.W.A. Wirtz
Download or read book New Developments in Lipid-Protein Interactions and Receptor Function written by K.W.A. Wirtz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "New Developments in Lipid-Protein Interactions and Receptor Function" was held on the Island of Spetsai, Greece, from August 16-27, 1992. This Institute was organized to bring together researchers in the field of membrane organization and dynamics with those actively involved in studies on receptor function, signal transduction mechanisms and gene regulation. 2 Presentations and discussions focussed on the regulation of intracellular Ca +-levels, on the second messengers derived from inositol lipids and on the specific phospholipase C isozymes involved in these processes. A major focus was on G-proteins and the effect of lipid anchors on their function. These principles of regulation were further discussed in the context of receptors for acetylcholine, lysophosphatidic acid and low-density lipoproteins. In addition, various aspects of the genomic regulation of cell growth and differentiation by transcription factors were presented. These topics were put into perspective by discussing the most recent developments in lipid-protein interactions, protein insertion into membranes, membrane lipid organization and lipid dynamics as mediated by phospholipid transfer proteins. This book presents the content of the major lectures and a selection of the most relevant of the most important topics posters. These proceedings offer a comprehensive account presented during the course of the Institute. The book is intended to make these proceedings accessible to a large audience.

Book excerpt: "Russo and Tilla's excitement upon arriving in Rome with their baby daughter is soon dulled by their discovery that the grand facades of polished marble mask an underworld of corrupt landlords and vermin-infested tenements. There are also far too may doctors--some skilled, but others positively dangerous. Ruso thinks he has been offered a reputable medical practice only to find that his predecessor, Doctor Kleitos, has fled, leaving a dead man in a barrel on the doorstep and the warning "Be careful who you trust." Distracted by the body and his efforts to help a friend win the hand of a rich young heiress, Ruso makes a grave mistake, causing him to question his own competence and integrity. With Ruso's reputation under threat, he and Tilla must protect their small family from Doctor Kleito's debt collectors and find allies in their new home while they track down the vanished doctor and find out the truth about the father of the heiress--Russo's patient--and the unfortunate man in the barrel."--
