Book Synopsis Grace and the Will According to Augustine by : Lenka Karfíková
Download or read book Grace and the Will According to Augustine written by Lenka Karfíková and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine on grace, one of the most discussed themes in his later years, was regarded by Augustine as the very core of Christianity. This book traces the gradual crystallisation of this teaching, including its unacceptable consequences (such as double predestination, inherited guilt which deserves eternal punishment, and its transmission through libidinous procreation). How did the reader of Cicero and “the books of the Platonists” reach the ideas that appear in his polemic against Julian (and which remind one of Freud rather than the Stoics or Plotinus)? That is the point of departure of this book. It surely cannot be expected that there is a definite answer to the question; rather, the aim is to follow and understand the development.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Augustine's Early Theology by : Carol Harrison
Download or read book Rethinking Augustine's Early Theology written by Carol Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carol Harrison counters the assumption that Augustine of Hippo's (354-430) theology underwent a revolutionary transformation around the time he was consecrated Bishop in 396. Instead, she argues that there is a fundamental continuity in his thought and practice from the moment of his conversion in 386. The book thereby challenges the general scholarly trend to begin reading Augustine with his Confessions (396), which were begun ten years after his conversion, and refocuses attention on his earlier works, which undergird his whole theological system.
Book Synopsis Volere e amare by : Donatella Pagliacci
Download or read book Volere e amare written by Donatella Pagliacci and published by Città Nuova. This book was released on 2003 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Augustine, Manichaeism and the Good by : Kam-Lun Edwin Lee
Download or read book Augustine, Manichaeism and the Good written by Kam-Lun Edwin Lee and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wickedness and mortality are deemed to be both spiritually and physically evil in Manichaean terms because they disturb a person's tranquil existence. In his non-metaphysical theory he designs to explain intrinsic personal evil developed in De uera religione (390), Augustine redefines these two notions as "sin" and "penalty," hence imposing on them a casual relation that makes the conception of a vicious circle mechanism possible.

Book Synopsis Augustine's Early Theology of Image by : Gerald P. Boersma
Download or read book Augustine's Early Theology of Image written by Gerald P. Boersma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for Christ to be the "image of God"? And, if Christ is the "image of God," can the human person also unequivocally be understood to be the "image of God"? Augustine's Early Theology of Image examines Augustine's conception of the imago dei and makes the case that it represents a significant departure from the Latin pro-Nicene theologies of Hilary of Poitiers, Marius Victorinus, and Ambrose of Milan only a generation earlier. Augustine's predecessors understood the imago dei principally as a Christological term designating the unity of divine substance. But, Gerald P. Boersma argues, Augustine affirms that Christ is an image of equal likeness, while the human person is an image of unequal likeness. Boersma's careful study thus argues that a Platonic and participatory evaluation of the nature of "image" enables Augustine's early theology of the image of God to move beyond that of his Latin predecessors and affirm the imago dei both of Christ and of the human person.
