Book excerpt: A captivating study of translation, adaptation, and intellectual cross-pollination that situates the Castilian Hermes in the center of medieval Mediterranean cultural exchange Hermes Trismegistus, a Hellenistic conflation of the Greek Hermes (god of interpretative wisdom) and the Egyptian Thoth (god of wisdom) was considered by many in the medieval world as the father of culture. Between c. 300 BCE - c. 1200 CE various treatises were attributed to the legendary sage, becoming known as the Hermetica - a combination of diverse philosophical and spiritual systems, addressing subjects such as alchemy, magic, and astrology. The Hermetica circulated widely, with premodern translations in Latin, Hebrew, Syriac, Persian, Arabic, and other Eastern languages. Whilst these iterations have been thoroughly researched, little attention has been paid to the Castilian Hermes, the first rendition of the wisdom traditions of Hermes Trismegistus in a Romance language. This book follows the ways in which Hermetic knowledge was brought to the Iberian Peninsula, showing how Hermes became the philosophical and spiritual inspiration for Christian, Arabic, and Jewish scholars there. Udaondo Alegre unveils the pivotal role of King Alfonso X ("the Learned") of Castile (1252-84) in creating this Spanish Hermes. Through the meticulous tracing of source texts and literary influences, the author explores the myriad ways in which Hermes crossed religious and linguistic boundaries to embody a composite intellectual identity, emblematic of medieval Spain's multicultural ethos. Alfonso's court is revealed as the site for a unique convergence of translation and interpretation that shaped a distinctly "Hispanic" Hermes.

Y nos confirma su investigación con esmero desde el origen y la responsabilidad en dejarlo escrito.Por muchos años desde mi infancia surgían muchas preguntas, muchas interrogantes sobre Jesús, muchos por qué, muchos vacíos. Los estudios desde la primaria hasta la universidad no respondieron ni una de esas preguntas. Los postgrados y maestrías tampoco. El recorrido por las religiones, haciendo su debida pausa de una en otra, y aguardando esa espera de responder cada pregunta, cada vacío, ansioso y deseoso en ese aguarde. Pasaron los años, de clases, de estudios, de naufragar a la deriva buscando puertos donde abarcar, donde tirar anclas, donde gritar tierra, por fin encontré tierra, por fin las repuestas a mis preguntas a ese vacío existencial que me impulsaba no rendirme a seguir buscando a seguir experimentando entre una y otra experiencia, por tan solo encontrar una repuesta, algo que me dijera, aquí es donde se responderán tus preguntas.Y así paso el tiempo, ya no solo estudiando, ni tocando puertas en religiones, y centros de enseñanzas bíblicas si no el comienzo de mi propia búsqueda de las repuestas. Encontré demasiadas discrepancias entre una religión y otra, cada una de ellas adecuando versiones, adaptando haciendo ajustes de contenidos de enseñanzas, de escritos bíblicos a su conveniencia, y creando su propio decálogo de preceptos y dogmas, no, definitivamente no están mis repuestas en esos lugares. ¡La teología, dije! La ciencia, la historia... talvez ahí encuentro algo. Y comenzó mi propia búsqueda, personal, a mis veinte y dos años, la búsqueda de la verdad absoluta que respondiera mis interrogantes y llenaran ese vacío existencial y espiritual con el que todo ser humano nacemos. Se preguntarán, lo encontró, ¿Verdaderamente lo encontró? ¿Encontró por fin sus repuestas, tiene las repuestas a mis interrogantes? El presente libro, el segundo que escribo, después de la primera edición de Laodicea, origen del vaticano, trata a como dijo Lucas, en un exhaustivo proceso investigativo, apegado a las repuestas que, si encontré en esa mi búsqueda existencial y espiritual. Es dar una nueva versión Sobre Puntos específicos de la vida de Jesús, el Cristo. Si, el que la mayoría de las religiones llama Jesús de Nazaret. Y encierro "puntos específicos" porque hablar de Jesús el Cristo necesitaríamos volúmenes de volúmenes para crear una pequeña sinopsis no solo de su vida, si no de los propósitos de su Venida. El presente libro, con 14 capítulos expresa esa exhaustiva búsqueda de esos cientos de cientos de preguntas y muchas de las repuestas de ellas, encontradas en entenderlo a él, si, a Jesús, el Cristo, a Jesús de Nazaret. Llamo al lector a abrir su mente, su limpio entendimiento y agudizar los sentidos, y crear un paralelo de esas preguntas que tenemos todos los seres humanos, y leer a detalle dicho libro. Y conoceréis la verdad y esta, (Al conocerla) os hará libres, verdaderamente Libres.
