Download or read book De Haas-van Alphen Experiments in Pulsed Magnetic Fields written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The powerful combination of de Haas-van Alphen effect and pulsed magnetic fields enables the study of the Fermi surface and the electronic properties of various materials of current interest. In this contribution I discuss experiments on CeB6, a heavy fermion, on YBa2Cu3Awe{sub 7-{delta}}, a high-Tc superconductor, and on A1{sub 7O}Pd{sub 2l.5}Mn{sub 8.5}, a quasicrystal. For each of these experiments I will point out the essential contribution of the pulsed magnetic field.

Book Synopsis The de Haas-van Alphen Effect and Fermi Surface of the Ordered Alloy Beta Prime-AgZn by : A. E. Dunsworth
Download or read book The de Haas-van Alphen Effect and Fermi Surface of the Ordered Alloy Beta Prime-AgZn written by A. E. Dunsworth and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The de Haas-van Alphen effect has been measured in the ordered alloy beta prime-AgZn by the modulation method, improving and extending the results of earlier observations. The results are in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations of the Fermi surface, although some of the predicted orbits have not been observed. The hole octahedron in the first band and the triangular hole in the second band have been identified unambiguously, and the shape of the octahedron has been determined by inversion. (Author).
Book Synopsis Electronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals by : C.B. Satterthwaite

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen is the smallest impurity atom that can be implanted in a metallic host. Its small mass and strong interaction with the host electrons and nuclei are responsible for many anomalous and interesting solid state effects. In addition, hydrogen in metals gives rise to a number of technological problems such as hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen storage, radiation hardening, first wall problems associated with nuclear fusion reactors, and degradation of the fuel cladding in fission reactors. Both the fundamental effects and applied problems have stimulated a great deal of inter est in the study of metal hydrogen systems in recent years. This is evident from a growing list of publications as well as several international conferences held in this field during the past decade. It is clear that a fundamental understanding of these problems re quires a firm knowledge of the basic interactions between hydrogen, host metal atoms, intrinsic lattice defects and electrons. This understanding is made particularly difficult by hyrogen's small mass and by the large lattice distortions that accompany the hydrogenation process. The purpose of the "International Symposium on the Electronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals" held in Richmond, Virginia, March 4-6, 1982 was to increase our fundamental under standing of hydrogen in metals. Such knowledge is essential in solving technologically important questions. The symposium con sisted of twenty-two invited papers and seventy-two contributed poster presentations and attracted nearly 150 participants from thirteen countries. The proceedings of this symposium constitute this book.

Book Synopsis Pd Palladium by : William P. Griffith
Download or read book Pd Palladium written by William P. Griffith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With platinum and rhodium, palladium is one of the most important members of the platinum metal group. The last Gmelin treatment of it was in 1942, and knowledge of its properties and chemistry has made enormous strides since then. This volume is primarily concerned with binary compounds and with the coordination complexes derived from them. Although it is a member of the nickel-palladium-platinum triad, it more closely resernblas platinum in its binary and coordination chemistry, though being a second-row transition element it displays less tendency than does platinum to assume higher oxidation states. ln heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, referred to at appropriate points, palladium and its complexes are of great importance in bulk and fine chemieals production, effecting a wide variety of organic transformations. The arrangement of material in this volume follows the traditional Gmelin arrangement. Within each category of compounds or complexes the material is arranged, as usual, in order of ascending metal oxidation states (e. g., palladium(ll) precedes palladium(IV)). The chemistry of the palladium-hydrogen system is so large that it merits a separate volume, so this book starts with the binary oxides and oxopalladates followed by hydroxides, hydroxo complexes and aquo complexes. Then nitrides and nitrates are treated. They are followed by the large chapters on halides and their complexes (172 pages). The largest single chapter in this volume (11 0 pages) deals with chlorides, chloropalladates and other chloro complexes.
