This book was released on 1985 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of the DDN Protocol Handbook in three volumes is to serve as a guide for those planning to implement the DoD suite of protocols on various computers to be attached to the DDN, including the ARPANET. For this reason tutorial information and auxiliary documents are included in addition to the protocol specifications themselves. All of this information has been collected into one set of documents that can be used as a source book for implementation purposes. This first volume contains an overview of the protocol standardization process and policies within the U.S. Department of Defense. It discusses the roles of the Defense Communications Agency (DCA) and the DDN Program Management Office (DDN PMO) with respect to this process. Detailed specifications for DoD military standard (MIL STD) computer communication protocols, which are required as part of the protocol suite in use on the Defense Data Network (DDN), are included. The Handbook also outlines the role of the DDN PMO in DDN configuration management, and provides instructions for obtaining additional protocol information.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 1186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume contains protocol information pertaining to the DARPA Internet community. It includes specifications for all current official DARPA Internet protocols plus auxiliary inforamtion needed to implement the protocols. The review process for acceptance of a new protocol for use by the DARPA Internet research community is described, as is the administrative structure of the DARPA Internet Research program. Some of the protocols in this volume have now been adopted as DoD military Standards (MIL STDs). The MIL STD versions can be found in Volume One. Note that the specification style is different for the two versions of protocols, with more emphasis being put on descriptive detail in the case of the DARPA Internet documents. This makes the DARPA documents helpful for researchers who are interested in the development of the protocol, or who are planning to write protocol implementation programs.

Book excerpt: This guide provides information about implementations and products compatible with the DOD Defense Data Network (DDN) suite of data communication protocols. The first section supplies background information about DDN protocol policy, and about the protocols themselves. Such information includes qualification testing and evaluation procedures, and how to obtain pertinent documentation. The next two sections of the document list software implementations alphabetically by machine type, and hardware implementations alphabetically by company. Information given about products includes their history, documentation, contact person, and distributor. The fourth section describes analysis tools. It includes information about network analysis products, such as protocol and network analyzers. This guide does not specifically endorse or recommend any product. Keywords: Transmission control protocol/internet protocol. (kr).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental to the design of any computer communication system are the rules by which information is exchanged. Such rules are embodied in the protocols which must be followed if communication across a given network is to succeed. The discipline of protocol design has its own set of guiding principles for good engineering practice; these principles have been found be experience to yield better network designs if followed. For example, experience has taught that if the set of protocols used within a network have a certain hierarchical structure, then the overall network will be easier to design, easier to modify, and easier to understand. Such principles have often gone unstated, but their existence and their utilization have allowed network design to move beyond the black-art stage. This document is proposed as a baseline Reference Model serving the development of standard protocols for the Department of Defense. As such, it attempts to describe the design principles which are implicit in the protocols developed under the ARPANET and Internet programs; it also attempts to prescribe principles for the development of future protocols under the ongoing DoD Protocol Standardization Program managed by the Defense Communications Agency.

Book excerpt: The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is intended for use as a highly reliable host-to-host protocol between hosts in packet-switched computer communication networks, and especially in interconnected systems of such networks. This document describes the functions to be performed by the Transmission Control Protocol, the program that implements it, and its interface to programs or users that require its services. Computer communication systems are playing an increasingly important role in military, government, and civilian environments. This document primarily focuses its attention on military computer communication requirements, especially robustness in the presence of communication unreliability and availability in the presence of congestion, but many of these problems are found in the civilian and government sector as well. As strategic and tactical computer communication networks are developed and deployed, it is essential to provide means of interconnecting them and to provide standard interprocess communication protocols which can support a broad range of applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This standard covers the content and format requirements for DoD standards and handbooks. Proper preparation and use of standardization documents is a difficult task requiring careful analysis and good judgment. The paragraphs below highlight areas of policy and intent to provide guidelines to assist in document development. There are five types of DoD-prepared standards: interface standards, standard practices, design criteria standards, test method standards, and manufacturing process standards. Before developing or revising a DoD standard, consider using an existing non-Government standard. If a suitable non-Government standard is not available, consider working with industry on a technical committee of a non-Government standards body to develop a new standard or revise an existing one. If it is not practical to use a non-Government standard, consult the DoD Index of Specifications and Standards (DoDISS) to determine if an existing DoD standard could be used. Also, consider whether a standard, which is a requirements-type document, is needed or if a guidance handbook could suffice. If it is determined that a DoD standard is needed, follow the guidelines below.
