Download or read book DCE Security Programming written by Wei Hu and published by O'Reilly Media. This book was released on 1995 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of DCE Security lies in access control lists (ACLs). But before you start to play with these, you have to do some design work. For instance, ACLs need to be stored on disk so that they can last between runs of the application.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest strengths of the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) from the Open Software Foundation (OSF) is that DCE offers the most complete, flexible, & well-integrated network security package on the industry. The heart of DCE Security lies in access control lists (ACLs). This book helps you plan your application & lay the groundwork for ACLs, as well as use the calls that come with the DCE Security interfaces. It covers the purpose of DCE Security, how the system fits together, what is required of the programmer, & how to figure out what needs protection. Focuses on DCE 1.0; version 1.1 is also discussed.
Book Synopsis Practical DCE Programming by : Charles Knouse
Download or read book Practical DCE Programming written by Charles Knouse and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1996 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), from the Open Software Foundation (OSF), will be the predominant middleware for developing distributed applications in the foreseeable future. But the DCE application programming interface (API) is complex and a barrier to its adoption. This book provides guidelines and tools to lessen the complexity of using the DCE, and to permit it to be used from other programming languages, such as COBOL. Covers the new facilities in the OSF DCE 1.1 Release that eases the development and management of application servers, the management of network communications, the location of resources, and the enforcement of security.

Instead, the book focuses on how DCE can be used to accomplish typical programming tasks and provides explanations to help the reader understand all the parts of DCE. Contents include: Purpose and goals of the Distributed Computing Environment. Definition of a cell. Distributing applications using RPC. Improving program performance using threads. Protecting resources using the security service. Locating network resources using the directory (name) service. Synchronizing network time using the time service. Sharing and replicating files through the distributed file system. Design and implementation considerations in writing distributed applications. Getting started as a DCE administrator. Determining your cell's boundaries. Initial choices in configuration and administrative responsibilities. Scenarios for security policies. Considerations for breaking up or replicating services across multiple hosts. Sample DCE application. Answers to commonly asked DCE questions. Finding an external time provider. Book Synopsis Distributed Systems by : Albert Fleischmann
Download or read book Distributed Systems written by Albert Fleischmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to make the reader famliar with software engineering for distributed systems. Software engineering is a valuable discipline in the develop ment of software. The reader has surely heard of software systems completed months or years later than scheduled with huge cost overruns, systems which on completion did not provide the performance promised, and systems so catastrophic that they had to be abandoned without ever doing any useful work. Software engi neering is the discipline of creating and maintaining software; when used in con junction with more general methods for effective management its use does reduce the incidence of horrors mentioned above. The book gives a good impression of software engineering particularly for dis tributed systems. It emphasises the relationship between software life cycles, meth ods, tools and project management, and how these constitute the framework of an open software engineering environment, especially in the development of distrib uted software systems. There is no closed software engineering environment which can encompass the full range of software missions, just as no single flight plan, airplane or pilot can perform all aviation missions. There are some common activities in software engi neering which must be addressed independent of the applied life cycle or methodol ogy. Different life cycles, methods, related tools and project management ap proaches should fit in such a software engineering framework.

Book Synopsis The Computer User's Survival Guide by : Joan Stigliani
Download or read book The Computer User's Survival Guide written by Joan Stigliani and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You probably suspect, on some level, that computers might be hazardous to your health. You might vaguely remember a study that you read years ago about miscarriages being more frequent for data entry operators. Or you might have run into a co-worker wearing splints and talking ominously about Workers' Comp insurance. Or you might notice that when you use a computer too long, you get stiff and your eyes get dry.But who wants to worry about such things? Surely, the people wearing splints must be malingerers who don't want to work? Surely, the people who design keyboards and terminals must be working to change their products if they are unsafe? Surely, so long as you're a good worker and keep your mind on your job, nothing bad will happen to you?The bad news is: You can be hurt by working at a computer. The good news is that many of the same factors that pose a risk to you are within your own control. You can take action on your own to promote your own health -- whether or not your terminal manufacturer, keyboard designer, medical provider, safety trainer, and boss are working diligently to protect you.The Computer User's Survival Guide looks squarely at all the factors that affect your health on the job, including positioning, equipment, work habits, lighting, stress, radiation, and general health.Through this guide you will learn: a continuum of neutral postures that you can at utilize at different work tasks how radiation drops off with distance and what electrical equipment is responsible for most exposure how modern office lighting is better suited to working on paper than on a screen, and what you can do to prevent glare simple breathing techniques and stretches to keep your body well oxygenated and relaxed, even when you sit all day how reading from a screen puts unique strains on your eyes and what kind of vision breaks will keep you most productive and rested what's going on "under the skin" when your hands and arms spend much of the day mousing and typing, and how you can apply that knowledge to prevent overuse injuries The Computer User's Survival Guide is not a book of gloom and doom. It is a guide to protecting yourself against health risks from your computer, while boosting your effectiveness and your enjoyment of work.
