Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 24th June 1947, a private pilot by the name of Kenneth Arnold entered the history books when he reported seeing a line of nine strange fast-moving objects near Mount Rainier in Washington State. His sighting - and the twisting of his description of the objects' movement through the air into the phrase "flying saucer" - sparked off a phenomenon which continues to baffle, intrigue and inspire millions of people seventy-five years later. The UFO subject remains unsolved even now, with new reports of civilian and military encounters emerging in the 2020s. Arnold's sighting was not the first in 1947, but the press attention it received and the subsequent reports of flying discs and other mysterious objects by airliner crews and military pilots stirred the US Army Air Force into action. By the end of the year, the newly-created US Air Force had established its first official UFO investigation program, Project Sign, charged with collecting sightings reports and analysing them. Sign would give way to a similar program, Grudge, in 1949. Whilst there are several infamous UFO sightings from the 1946-1949 period in addition to Kenneth Arnold's, many of the aerial encounters that took place during this time are much less well-known. This new work charts these events, including aircrew testimony and official evaluations. Intertwined around these sightings are the stories of the USAF investigation programs Sign and Grudge, which are fascinating in themselves. If you consider yourself knowledgeable about the UFO subject, this book should still hold information that you've never come across before. For those readers who have come to Ufology after the ground-breaking events of December 2017, when three infamous US Navy FLIR videos showing mysterious craft were publicly released, this work will give you an incredible insight into the early years of the modern-day UFO phenomenon, setting the present day into context. If you don't necessarily believe in this sort of thing, then the story of how something gripped a nation is interesting in itself. Finally, if you are sitting on the fence in terms of what you believe about UFOs, this book offers a relatively unbiased look at what transpired between 1946 and 1949. The author is not trying to tell you that men from Mars were invading the Earth, or aliens from Zeta Reticuli. However, something was going on back then - and continues to even now, seventy-odd years later. This is the 2nd edition of what has become a critically acclaimed work on the early years of the modern-day UFO phenomenon.

Book excerpt: From Garrett M. Graff, New York Times bestselling author of Raven Rock, The Only Plane in the Sky, and Pulitzer Prize finalist for history Watergate, comes the first comprehensive and eye-opening exploration of our government’s decades-long quest to solve one of humanity’s greatest mysteries: Are we alone in the universe? From the post-war Project Blue Book to the Pentagon’s modern-day Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, bestselling author and historian Garrett M. Graff presents the first serious narrative history of humanity’s hunt for alien life—including the military and CIA’s secret, decades-long quest to study UFOs. A thrilling story of science, the Cold War, Nazi research, atomic anxieties, secret spy planes, and the space race, UFO traces the real-life history of the U.S. government’s hunt for “unidentified aerial phenomena” here on Earth, from Roswell to Rendlesham Forest, as well as the story of the small group of forward-thinking scientists—astronomers like J. Allen Hynek, Frank Drake, Carl Sagan, and Jill Tarter—who launched the search for extraterrestrial intelligence far from Earth. Drawing on original archival research, declassified documents, and interviews with senior intelligence and military officials, Graff's book traces the long history of our quest to understand one of the most profound and popular questions of all time: whether or not aliens exist.

Book excerpt: Today, many Americans spend most of their time at UFO conventions, UFO pilgrimages, and New Age gatherings. Cities and local people have learned to capitalize on their UFO phenomena. Rumors of the 1947 crash of a flying saucer draw tourists to Roswell, New Mexico, which holds an annual UFO festival and sports its own UFO museum. However, there is no study of the role played by rumor in the development of the Flying Saucer phenomenon. In July 1947, the renowned psychologist Dr. Gordon W. Allport from Harvard University was once interviewed by a reporter from The New York Times about his book: The Psychology of Rumor. During the interview, He pointed out that: "The book concerns itself "with how current rumors are born and grow and how flying saucer epidemics spread throughout the nation." The author finished his book at the end of WW II and the dawn of the UFO age. Also, he feels the social atmosphere that permeated those years with the Roswell incident (1947) and Kenneth Arnold's (1947) first widely reported modern unidentified flying object sighting. However, his book was not intended to deal directly, and it is not about Flying Saucer rumors; the author realized that the exact mechanism that creates rumors could apply to Flying Saucers. We have republished, as a facsimile edition, Allport's original work of 1947 under a new title: "The Psychology of Rumor Or How The Flying Saucer Phenomenon Spread Throughout The Nation" following the author's comments to The New York Time reporter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A voyage of exploration to the outer reaches of our inner lives. UFOs are a myth, says David J. Halperin—but myths are real. The power and fascination of the UFO has nothing to do with space travel or life on other planets. It's about us, our longings and terrors, and especially the greatest terror of all: the end of our existence. This is a book about UFOs that goes beyond believing in them or debunking them and to a fresh understanding of what they tell us about ourselves as individuals, as a culture, and as a species. In the 1960s, Halperin was a teenage UFOlogist, convinced that flying saucers were real and that it was his life's mission to solve their mystery. He would become a professor of religious studies, with traditions of heavenly journeys his specialty. With Intimate Alien, he looks back to explore what UFOs once meant to him as a boy growing up in a home haunted by death and what they still mean for millions, believers and deniers alike. From the prehistoric Balkans to the deserts of New Mexico, from the biblical visions of Ezekiel to modern abduction encounters, Intimate Alien traces the hidden story of the UFO. It's a human story from beginning to end, no less mysterious and fantastic for its earthliness. A collective cultural dream, UFOs transport us to the outer limits of that most alien yet intimate frontier, our own inner space.

Book excerpt: SECOND EDITION-REVISED AND UPDATEDThe reality of UFO incursions at American nuclear weapons facilities has been convincingly established. Hundreds of U.S. military veterans now openly discuss these ominous incidents and thousands of declassified government documents substantiate their revelations.Over the past four decades, renowned researcher Robert Hastings has interviewed more than 150 of those veterans regarding their involvement in these astounding cases. On September 27, 2010, CNN live-streamed his UFOs and Nukes press conference in Washington D.C. during which former U.S. Air Force officers described numerous nuclear missiles mysteriously malfunctioning moments after a disc-shaped craft was observed hovering near their underground launch silos. That shocking episode, in March 1967, was merely the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Documented UFO activity occurred at a plutonium processing plant in Washington State as early as January 1945, months prior to the atomic bombings in Japan. Another incident, in October 2010, involved one missile base in Wyoming being unable to communicate with several of its missile launch control capsules just as a huge cigar-shaped craft slowly flew over them.Significantly, documents smuggled out of Russia in the 1990s confirm that Soviet nukes were also the focus of UFO interest during the Cold War era. On one occasion, in October 1982, a number of missiles temporarily activated for launch, as terrified officers attempted to disrupt the unauthorized count-down. After 15 seconds, the anomaly terminated and the equipment returned to standby status. While this was taking place, an enormous disc silently hovered over the base.In short, the evidence presented in UFOs & Nukes makes clear that humans' deadliest weapons have been, since their development and use during World War II, under intense scrutiny by still-unidentified observers possessing tremendously advanced technology.Given these disclosures, it seems evident that the UFO-Nukes Connection is highly significant and perhaps even the key reason these mysterious aerial craft have appeared in our skies over the past seven decades.

Book excerpt: Journalist Jane Hale seeks the truth about UFOs in this science fiction suspense that revolves around a conspiracy: Flying saucers are a product of human -- not alien -- ingenuity. The United States purloined the technology from the Germans at the end of the war and then began a clandestine program to produce a fleet of antigravity vehicles; Harry Truman secretly nurtured the program after the saucers' sensational showing in demonstrations the president himself ordered over Washington in 1952; influential engineer and technocrat Vannevar Bush aggressively enforced a secrecy doctrine reminiscent of the Manhattan Project. Four decades later, physics wunderkind, fighter pilot and astronautics prodigy Tommy Swift is recruited into the military's clandestine space program. A Midwestern kid with a talent for math and science and a Ph.D. in physics, he is on a fast track to become a NASA astronaut until diverted to the shadow space program. He becomes commander of Big Black Delta, a mammoth triangular spacecraft.
