Book excerpt: As the electronic pulses that caused the power outage finally come to an end, thirteen-year-old Beth Branning witnesses two brutal murders. She narrowly escapes the killer and runs away in terror. But he knows who she is, and it’s just a matter of time before he comes after her. Torn between fear and compassion, Beth tries to help the grieving wife of one of the victims. But will her bravery cost Beth her life? As the power begins to be restored, the Brannings face their toughest crisis yet. Will God require more of them this time than they’re prepared to give? New York Times bestselling suspense author Terri Blackstock weaves a masterful what-if novel in which global catastrophe reveals the darkness in human hearts—and lights the way to restoration for a self-centered world. “Blackstock is absolutely masterful at bringing spiritual dilemmas to the surface and allowing readers to wrestle with them alongside her characters.” —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 stars (of Dawn’s Light)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. Although it is a slim volume, the WPA Guide to Tennessee is packed with useful and interesting information. There are sections on folklore and the state’s architectural and literary legacies as well as an essay on the Tennessee Valley Authority. There are 16 driving tours in total, through both the Volunteer State’s several major cities and the natural wonder of the Great Smokey Mountains Natural Park.

Book excerpt: Originally published as part of a series for the Tennessee American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, this well-written volume gives necessary background information and details the early activities in that area in the 1760s. It thoroughly covers the settlement during its vanguard role in the 1770s and chronicles the various events that brought a change from that of a holding action to one of aggressive expansion in the 1780s.

Book excerpt: There has been many novels written about the Civil War in the East. Now Dan Korn brings to life the incredible story of the western theater's first major battle, the titantic struggle between two massive ill-prepared armies as they met on the shore of the mighty Tennessee River at a lazy riverboat landing called Pittsburg Landing. Nestled in a glen not far from the water's edge was a sleepy house of worship, named Shiloh Meetinghouse. Shiloh means "place of peace." After the events of early April, 1862, Americans would never think of peace when they heard the name Shiloh ever again. As Dawn's Gray Steel opens, the South is reeling over the recent twin losses of the Tennessee forts Henry and Donelson, and the taking of the Tennessee capital, Nashville, by the thus far victorious western armies of the North. These victories have given the North a new hero in the form of a quiet and unassuming leader, Ulysses S. Grant. To the North, Grant has become "Unconditional Surrender " Grant. To end the string of Yankee victories, the Confederacy turns to the quixotic and charismatic Albert Sidney Johnston, a man some consider to be the greatest soldier in the Confederacy, and the man Jefferson Davis entrusts to save the Confederacy in the West. It will become Johnston's mission to end Grant's run. Victory has brought Grant fame, and with that fame comes a certain relaxed feeling in Grant that allows him to place his still relatively inexperienced Army of the Tennessee into camp along the Tennessee without taking many defensive precautions. It is this relaxed atmosphere that causes deep anxiety in one of Grant's newest division commanders, the cigar-chomping, wild-eyed William Tecumseh Sherman. Grant assures his new subordinate that Johnston would be crazy to attack the Union Army where they are. It is a mistake that Johnston is determined to make Grant regret. Johnston refuses to heed the advice of his own subordinates and decides to launch an all out attack against the still unsuspecting Union camp. Against all odds the attack will be almost a complete surprise, stunning the unsuspecting Union forces with its ferocity. The bewildered Yankees fight back with pluck and equal determination but the Confederate forces will be on the verge of a stunning victory, when fate and the incredible stubbornness of one man intervenes. It will be here at Shiloh that Johnston will bet his life and roll the "iron dice" of battle in one magnificent gamble. In the smoke-filled swamps and ravines along the Tennessee, Sherman will be forced to finally face his fears, and find a joy in the depth of his abilities he never knew existed. And it will be here, in the incredible maelstrom that roars about him, that Grant will demonstrate for all to see an amazingly unflappable coolness, a coolness that will allow him to see what no other man sees that day, and enable him to snatch an incredible victory from almost certain defeat. It will be an amazing ability that will help propel him down the path to unprecedented glory, respect, and eventually, the trust of his President. A trust that will eventually bring Grant to the East, and an inevitable meeting with Robert E. Lee

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely study of change in a complex environment, Where There Are Mountains explores the relationship between human inhabitants of the southern Appalachians and their environment. Incorporating a wide variety of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, the study draws information from several viewpoints and spans more than four hundred years of geological, ecological, anthropological, and historical development in the Appalachian region. The book begins with a description of the indigenous Mississippian culture in 1500 and ends with the destructive effects of industrial logging and dam building during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Donald Edward Davis discusses the degradation of the southern Appalachians on a number of levels, from the general effects of settlement and industry to the extinction of the American chestnut due to blight and logging in the early 1900s. This portrait of environmental destruction is echoed by the human struggle to survive in one of our nation's poorest areas. The farming, livestock raising, dam building, and pearl and logging industries that have gradually destroyed this region have also been the livelihood of the Appalachian people. The author explores the sometimes conflicting needs of humans and nature in the mountains while presenting impressive and comprehensive research on the increasingly threatened environment of the southern Appalachians.

Book excerpt: Because the power industry is anticipating greatly increased generating capacity requirements in the 1990s, political controversy over electricity demand and supply is likely to return to--and perhaps surpass--the level of rancor experienced during the 1970s. Fortunately, a sizable number of utility companies have come to believe that destructive c
