Months later, radio broadcasts changed from Polish music to German, with the words, "Deustchland Uber Alles" spoken over the airwaves. Broadcasts of Hitler promising he would take over the world were heard all over Poland. Within a short period of time after the broadcast, Nazis came to David's house and told his family they had 48 hours to gather their belongings, since they were being deported to the Lodz. They were in the Lodz ghetto for approximately two years. During David's time there (1939-1941), he was told to say that he was 15 years old instead of 10 years old. The reason for this was because younger children were "not needed." In 1941, David was sent to the Posen labor camp. At any given time, there were about a thousand Jews there used as forced laborers in public works, construction, gardening and transportation projects throughout the city.David was issued his first identification number, which was #176. His role at Posen was to chop stones and build the German Autobahn highway.The prisoners were only given two rations of coffee, soup and bread. David was brave enough to convince a German foreman to allow him to do various tasks including making the foreman's bed, shining his shoes and serving him food. In exchange, the foreman would purposely throw food in the trash so David could take it and eat it. One day David was caught doing this by a German officer and was severely beaten for this. After two years, David was transferred to Auschwitz in 1943. When he arrived, he was immediately interrogated by SS officers who asked if he hated Hitler. His answer was "no" which ultimately saved his life.David's primary responsibility at Auschwitz was as a mechanic working on anti-aircraft guns. He had many encounters with German officers and frequently fended for his life.In January 1945, David was deported by cattle car to Mauthausen, a concentration camp located in Austria. It was a 370-mile, five-day trek. None of the hundreds of passengers were given any food or water. Many died.To survive, David cut his shirt into strips, tied the strips together to his belt and connected his red coffee cup to the end. David prayed to G-d to catch snow.His cup was used to scoop snow off of the ground, as they moved along. The water from the snow was the only thing David had to sustain himself during the very long ride. David spent five months in Mauthausen and then transferred to a concentration camp called Gusen II where he was liberated in May of 1945. David was 15 years old and weighed only 78 pounds. He looked like a skeleton. After liberation, David was in a refugee camp for three to four months. He eventually made his way to Paris where he met his wife, Marie. They resided there for five years and immigrated to America in 1950. The couple had one daughter, three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. David's story is one of resilience and courage. He was saved by his own bravery or "chutzpah" (which means "guts" in Yiddish).His survival through five concentration camps is a testament to David's will to live. Today, he tells his story so that future generations will never forget.
