Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During election years in the early 1800s, touring politicians would often stop at Vevay in an effort to gather votes. On one such occasion the governor, Jonathan Jennings, was visiting Vevay with his entourage. They all stopped at Father Morerod's home to taste some of his wine. The governor and one or two others from abroad, being unaccustomed to wine, became considerably befuddled, as did some of the 'Vevay boys.' The way back to town was blocked by a large growth of dog fennel, a yellow flowering weed. The politicians passed through this field wearing white trousers and shirts. In their confused condition they soon emerged and presented to the townsfolk an amusing spectacle of the governor and fellow dignitaries wearing yellow pants and yellow spotted vests." -- From Indiana Wine: A History John James Dufour arrived in America in 1796, looking for land for a colony of 'vinedressers.' They first settled in Kentucky, but then purchased land in the Indiana Territory on the north bank of the Ohio River. Here, in the town they called Vevay, the Swiss winegrowers successfully produced America's first commercial wines. In Indiana Wine, a richly anecdotal history of wine production in Indiana, James L. and John J. Butler relate a vintage story of early triumph, followed by precipitous decline, and ending in present-day success. Though the economic decline of the 1820s ended the first flowering of Indiana vineyards, John James Dufour continued his work, and in 1826 he published the first book written about American grape growing and winemaking. Thereafter the heart of America's wine production was centered near Cincinnati, Ohio. That industry collapsed in the 1870s, but small wineries could still be found scattered across southern Indiana. With the coming of Prohibition, the idea of Indiana wine was lost. It was not until the passing of the "Small Winery" law in 1971 that winemaking began anew in the state. Today some 25 wineries, large and small, produce a wide variety of Indiana wine.

Book excerpt: This dictionary contains data not only on the origins of French surnames in Québec and Acadia, a great many of which eventually spread to many parts of North America, but also on those which arrived in the United States directly from various French-speaking European and Caribbean countries. In addition to providing the etymology of the original surnames, it also lists the multifarious variants that have developed over the last four centuries. A unique feature of this work in comparison to other onomastics dictionaries is the inclusion of genealogical information on most of the Francophone migrants to this continent, something which has been rendered possible not only by the excellent record-keeping in French Canada since the very beginnings of the colony, but also through the explosion of such data on the internet in the last couple of decades. In sum, this dictionary serves the dual purpose of providing information on the meanings of French family names on the North American continent, as well as on the migrants who brought them there.

Book excerpt: No major book on watches has been published since G. H. Baillie's great work in 1929, now long out of print; and nearly ten years have passed since the publication of the seventh edition of Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers of which Cecil Clutton was a co-author, which is a general work, equally divided between clocks and watches. There has been a greatly increased interest in watches in the last decade (ample evidence of this is afforded by the sales-rooms), and this has led to the need for a really exhaustive work on the subject such as this one. The historical section of the book gives equal importance to the decorative and mechanical aspects of watches, presented in a way which will apeal to a wide range of readers; and it covers their whole history from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-twentieth century. But whereas the previous generatoin of collectors was most interested in decorative verge watches, the trend today is towards the precision watch, especially of the 1780-1830 period. While the earlier periods have by no means been neglected, it is in the later ones that the reader will find most that is likely to be new to him. For the growing class of technical-minded collectors, the technical section of the book seeks to give an insight into the minds of the great makers of the past in a way that perhaps has never been attempted before, by its critical approach to the varoius escapements. The 597 illustrations have been planned to cover all the important and many less important types of watch, and are about equally divided between their exteriors and interiors. The reader may be surprised not to find more line-drawings of escapements, but the authors decided on the bold step of replacing these by large-scale photographs of the escapements, separately mounted, which they believe will give a better idea of the mechanism. This authentic and comprehensive book is addressed primarily to the serious student, but it will also delight the ordinarily interested reader or collector.
