Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Ancestry of David Bracewell, Carey Bracewell describes the fourteen-generation lineage traced from Edmund Bracewell, who was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, c. 1510, to Careys son, David Bracewell, who was born in Texas in 1964. He outlines the career of the first American Bracewell, the Reverend Robert Bracewell (1611-1668), a Londoner, Oxford graduate, and Cavalierone who was invited to Virginia to take charge of St. Lukes Church, now a national historic landmark. Following the lead of the Reverend Bracewell, Carey Bracewell explains how each successive generation has faithfully emulated his example of pioneering religious leadership. More than just a recitation of genealogical lineage, this family history tells the fascinating story of how the Bracewell men and women struggled and brought Christianity to the wilds of Tennessee, southern Illinois, Arkansas, and Texas. Among their many lasting accomplishments, one Bracewell ancestor, Richard Brazil, founded the oldest Baptist church in Arkansas. Bracewell published a genealogical journal on the Bracewell family and started the Braswell DNA Project. He was the first to discover the DNA profile that traces the family back to one man who lived in Bracewell, Yorkshire, in the late Middle Ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work of original scholarship and compelling sweep, Okfuskee is a community-centered Indian history with an explicitly comparativist agenda. Joshua Piker uses the history of Okfuskee, an eighteenth-century Creek town, to reframe standard narratives of both Native and American experiences. This unique, detailed perspective on local life in a Native society allows us to truly understand both the pervasiveness of colonialism's influence and the inventiveness of Native responses. At the same time, by comparing the Okfuskees' experiences to those of their contemporaries in colonial British America, the book provides a nuanced discussion of the ways in which Native and Euro-American histories intersected with, and diverged from, each other. Piker examines the diplomatic ties that developed between the Okfuskees and their British neighbors; the economic implications of the Okfuskees' shifting world view; the integration of British traders into the town; and the shifting gender and generational relationships in the community. By both providing an in-depth investigation of a colonial-era Indian town in Indian country and placing the Okfuskees within the processes central to early American history, Piker offers a Native history with important implications for American history.

Book excerpt: In The Partnership Charter, psychologist and business mediation expert David Gage offers a comprehensive guide to the art of establishing and maintaining a business partnership. The centerpiece of his approach is the Partnership Charter, a document that clearly outlines the goals, expectations, responsibilities, and relationships of the principals. The charter identifies potential sources of conflict and how they will be resolved, while addressing such sensitive issues as personal styles, values, money, and power. Illustrating every principle through engaging stories drawn from Gage's front-line experience consulting to business partners, as well as interviews with the founding partners of such successful businesses as Progressive Insurance Company and Manpower, Inc., The Partnership Charter dispels common myths and presents a practical framework for launching, building, and sustaining a thriving business partnership.

Book excerpt: This schedule represents a complete list of the heads of families in North Carolina at the time of the adoption of the Constitution. Under law, the marshals were required to ascertain the number of inhabitants within their respective districts, omitting Indians not taxed, and distinguishing free persons (including those bound to service for a term of years) from all others; the sex and color of free persons; and the number of free males 16 years of age and over. The object of the inquiry last mentioned was, undoubtedly, to obtain definite knowledge as to the military and industrial strength of the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exhaustive biography, Keith Krawczynski details the political and social career of William Henry Drayton (1742–1779), an ambitious, wealthy lowcountry planter and zealous patriot leader who was at the center of Revolutionary activity in South Carolina from 1774 until his death five years later. Considered the most effective Whig polemicist in the lower South, Drayton served on all his state’s important Revolutionary governing bodies, commanded a frigate of war, was elected chief justice in 1776, co-authored South Carolina’s 1778 constitution, and represented the state in the Continental Congress from 1778 until his demise. Although Drayton was a leading radical and the central figure of the American Revolution in South Carolina, historians have largely ignored his contributions. With William Henry Drayton, Krawczynski removes this fascinating man from the shadows of history. Drayton was an improbable rebel. After receiving his formal education in England, the South Carolina–born Drayton returned to his birthplace as a planter and continued to espouse Royalist ideals. During a later visit to Britain, he was hailed as a champion of British sovereignty. In fact, South Carolina harbored few early revolutionaries, as low-country planters and merchants remained entrenched in the imperial system of trade, backcountry residents strongly identified with the king, and whites feared showing division lest their slaves launch a rebellion. Yet, disgruntled with the king’s increasing infringement on American liberties, Drayton embraced the rebel cause with the zealotry of a recent convert and eventually did more to resist British rule than any other resident of the Palmetto State. Because he entered the Revolution as a supporter of the Crown, Drayton’s life sheds light on why the planter-mercantile gentry rebelled against the mother country on which it relied for its economic status. His energetic attempts to preserve the provincial hierarchy and keep the reins of government firmly in the hands of the local aristocracy also help to explain why South Carolina’s rebellion was more politically conservative than that of other states. By raising the profile of this South Carolina patriot, William Henry Drayton brings new depth to our understanding of the American Revolution.
