Romantic preferences, as shaped by law, perpetuate segregation and subordination by limiting, on the basis of race, individuals’ prospects for marriage and marriage-like commitments, as well as economic and social mobility. The book begins by tracing the legacy of slavery, anti-miscegenation, segregation, and racially discriminatory immigration laws to show how this legal landscape facilitated the residential, economic, and social distance between racial and ethnic groups, which in turn continue to shape romantic preferences today. Solangel Maldonado argues that the law further influences intimate choices by structuring the spaces within which individuals meet and interact via practices such as redlining, gentrification, and zoning. Maldonado includes studies of online and offline dating preferences to demonstrate that romantic predilections follow a gendered racial hierarchy in which Whites are at the top, African-Americans at the bottom, and—depending on skin tone—Asian-Americans and Latinos in the middle. These preferences may be explicit, implicit, or both, but they are usually the result of stereotypes reflected in social and cultural norms. Book excerpt: Increasing number of teenagers are dating outside of their race, and they are redefining the status quo for relationships. This study was conducted to investigate the experience of black college males who interracially date. This study engaged qualitative methodology through interviews of a convenience sample of eight African American males of traditional college age. the interview questions were designed to elicit from the subjects their subjective experience of interracial dating. the results revealed an openness to talk about the experience of interracial dating, which was not supported by previous research. Indicators suggested that there might be a preference to date outside one's race for the experience and not the expectant rewards of the general exchange theory. Mothers played a significant role in the decision-making process of how the experiences of dating would be interpreted by the participants in the study. the black male reported that the white female had greater acceptance then other females in three areas: white females were reported to be less demanding, less sexually inhibited and more assertive. None of the participants disapproved of their experience of dating interracially, and all reported a willingness to date a white female in the future. the findings suggest that black males in this particular sample consider white females as viable dating partners and relational counterparts.

Book excerpt: There is a disparity in the Black community such that educated Black women outnumber educated Black men. This becomes a concern for Black women when trying to find a potential mate of similar racial identity and educational background. The present study seeks to assess the dating dilemma for educated Black women (Bachelor's level degree and above) by examining their satisfaction with the dating pool, possible responses to the disparity, and the importance of their potential mate's race and education level. A 26-item questionnaire was dispersed to 227 Black women regarding dating preferences and responses to the disparity. Results indicate a statistical significance for the importance of both, a partner's race and education level. Almost half (48%) of these Black women expressed dissatisfaction with the dating pool but this was not statistically significant. Dating higher than one's preferred age range was the most endorsed response to the dating dilemma. Overall, women expressed an endorsement for the education level of their partner being more important than race, but only slightly. Future research and implications are discussed.

Do black women consciously resist such involvement? What motivates the relatively few women who are in these types of relationships? And how do they navigate the unfamiliar terrain in intimacy? One of the most popular explanations for black women's involvement in interracial intimacy is the unavailability of eligible black men. This explanation focuses on the dismal statistics popularly discussed in reports that forecast lonely futures for African American females. Craig-Henderson explores another, more provocative explanation. She argues that some black women may disassociate from larger social stereotypes by consciously and strategically making choices that distance them from what is considered characteristic of the "typical" African American woman.
