Book Synopsis Patterns of Data Modeling by : Michael Blaha
Download or read book Patterns of Data Modeling written by Michael Blaha and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best-selling author and database expert with more than 25 years of experience modeling application and enterprise data, Dr. Michael Blaha provides tried and tested data model patterns, to help readers avoid common modeling mistakes and unnecessary frustration on their way to building effective data models. Unlike the typical methodology book, Patterns of Data Modeling provides advanced techniques for those who have mastered the basics. Recognizing that database representation sets the path for software, determines its flexibility, affects its quality, and influences whether it succeeds or fails, the text focuses on databases rather than programming. It is one of the first books to apply the popular patterns perspective to database systems and data models. It offers practical advice on the core aspects of applications and provides authoritative coverage of mathematical templates, antipatterns, archetypes, identity, canonical models, and relational database design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Database Administration, Second Edition, is the definitive, technology-independent guide to the modern discipline of database administration. Packed with best practices and proven solutions for any database platform or environment, this text fully reflects the field’s latest realities and challenges. Drawing on more than thirty years of database experience, Mullins focuses on problems that today’s DBAs actually face, and skills and knowledge they simply must have. Mullins presents realistic, thorough, and up-to-date coverage of every DBA task, including creating database environments, data modeling, normalization, design, performance, data integrity, compliance, governance, security, backup/recovery, disaster planning, data and storage management, data movement/distribution, data warehousing, connectivity, metadata, tools, and more. This edition adds new coverage of “Big Data,” database appliances, cloud computing, and NoSQL. Mullins includes an entirely new chapter on the DBA’s role in regulatory compliance, with substantial new material on data breaches, auditing, encryption, retention, and metadata management. You’ll also find an all-new glossary, plus up-to-the-minute DBA rules of thumb.

Book Synopsis Scientific Information Systems by : Robert W. Holt
Download or read book Scientific Information Systems written by Robert W. Holt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety critical jobs in fields such as aviation and nuclear power plants require a careful and comprehensive analysis of all factors relevant to critical job performance. Understanding how these factors uniquely and in combination, affect performance requires interconnecting a job performance database with several other information databases. The scientific method is necessary to ensure information quality; to solve problems or project trends; and to correctly evaluate changes in selection, training, performance evaluation, the person-machine interface, or team dynamics. Combining the scientific method with the construction, validation and use of the information databases results in a Scientific Information System (SIS), which joins practical utility with powerful evauations of relevant theories. This book discusses how to blend scientific methods with the broad capabilities of computer database information systems. This synthesis will aid anyone who is trying to explain, predict, or change the behavior of a complex system involving humans. Whilst developed from research on information systems in the aviation industry, the principles and methods are universal and the book provides conceptual guidance for the construction and use of such systems in other domains. The examples clarify the advantages of this type of information system and the enormous potential power for understanding a target system completely and accurately.

Book Synopsis Multimedia Database Systems by : V.S. Subrahmanian
Download or read book Multimedia Database Systems written by V.S. Subrahmanian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid growth in the use of computers to manipulate, process, and reason about multimedia data, the problem of how to store and retrieve such data is becoming increasingly important. Thus, although the field of multimedia database systems is only about 5 years old, it is rapidly becoming a focus for much excitement and research effort. Multimedia database systems are intended to provide unified frameworks for requesting and integrating information in a wide variety of formats, such as audio and video data, document data, and image data. Such data often have special storage requirements that are closely coupled to the various kinds of devices that are used for recording and presenting the data, and for each form of data there are often multiple representations and multiple standards - all of which make the database integration task quite complex. Some of the problems include: - what a multimedia database query means - what kinds of languages to use for posing queries - how to develop compilers for such languages - how to develop indexing structures for storing media on ancillary devices - data compression techniques - how to present and author presentations based on user queries. Although approaches are being developed for a number of these problems, they have often been ad hoc in nature, and there is a need to provide a princi pled theoretical foundation.
