Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of the first phase of a study of full scale welded joints: a study of the fatigue and static properties of butt welds. The purpose of the tests reported were to compare the fatigue and static properties of butt welds produced with the E6010 and the E7016 electrodes. Two types of butt weld specimens were tested: the longitudinal butt welds were tested with the applied stress parallel to the direction of welding, whereas the transverse butt welds were tested with the applied stress perpendicular to the direction of welding. The butt welds have been tested either with the reinforcement on or with the reinforcement removed by grinding. The specimens were subjected to a stress cycle which varied from a low tension of about 2000 psi to a maximum tension which was of such magnitude that failure generally occurred between 100,000 and 2,000,000 cycles. In order to more thoroughly understand the behaviour of butt welds subjected to repeated stresses, an extensive review of the fatigue tests of butt welds conducted previously at the University of Illinois is included in the report.

Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the fatigue and static properties of butt-welded joints in A-242 steel and to compare, quantitatively, these results with those obtained from similar joints in A-7 steel. Four types of specimens were employed in this investigation. A plain plate specimen was selected to determine the fatigue properties of the base material, a tee filletwelded joint was used to compare the fatigue properties of fillet welds deposited with E7016 electrodes on A-242 and A-7 steels, and longitudinal and transverse buttwelded joints were selected to study the fatigue and static properties of butt welds with the applied load parallel to and perpendicular to the direction of welding. All of the fatigue specimens were tested on a zero-tension stress cycle of such a magnitude that failure generally occurred between 100,000 and 2,000,000 cycles. To study the effect of surface geometry, the plain plate and butt weld specimens were tested either with the mill scale and weld reinforcement on or with all surface irregularities removed by grinding. The A-242 longitudinal butt-welded joints were found to be about 15 percent stronger under repeated loads then similar A-7 joints, whereas there was little difference between the average fatigue strengths of transverse butt-welded joints of the two steels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avoiding or controlling fatigue damage is a major issue in the design and inspection of welded structures subjected to dynamic loading. Life predictions are usually used for safe life analysis, i.e. for verifying that it is very unlikely that fatigue damage will occur during the target service life of a structure. Damage tolerance analysis is used for predicting the behavior of a fatigue crack and for planning of in-service scheduled inspections. It should be a high probability that any cracks appearing are detected and repaired before they become critical. In both safe life analysis and the damage tolerance analysis there may be large uncertainties involved that have to be treated in a logical and consistent manner by stochastic modeling. This book focuses on fatigue life predictions and damage tolerance analysis of welded joints and is divided into three parts. The first part outlines the common practice used for safe life and damage tolerance analysis with reference to rules and regulations. The second part emphasises stochastic modeling and decision-making under uncertainty, while the final part is devoted to recent advances within fatigue research on welded joints. Industrial examples that are included are mainly dealing with offshore steel structures. Spreadsheets which accompany the book give the reader the possibility for hands-on experience of fatigue life predictions, crack growth analysis and inspection planning. As such, these different areas will be of use to engineers and researchers.

Book excerpt: Local approaches to fatigue assessment are used to predict the structural durability of welded joints, to optimise their design and to evaluate unforeseen joint failures. This standard work provides a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods. It covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. Seam-welded and spot-welded joints in structural steels and aluminium alloys are also considered. This completely reworked second edition takes into account the tremendous progress in understanding and applying local approaches which has been achieved in the last decade. It is a standard reference for designers, structural analysts and testing engineers who are responsible for the fatigue-resistant in-service behaviour of welded structures. - Completely reworked second edition of a standard work providing a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods - Covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. - Written by a distinguished team of authors

Book excerpt: This authoritative handbook presents an extensive compilation of data covering all important fatigue situations - fatigue strength of steels and other materials, notch- , size-, and mean stress effects, influence of temperature and corrosion, influence of special surface treatments, fatigue of structural elements and welds, aircraft fatigue, multilevel loading test programs, fatigue performance prediction etc.As is well known, fatigue investigations are often extremely time-consuming. The results of the tests depend upon numerous factors, and therefore handbook data must include all of the parameters which affect reported test results. The calculation of fatigue life and strength cannot be performed without having appropriate information concerning the specific fatigue situation. Nor can test programs be properly prepared without knowing the service conditions and the results of previous tests as, otherwise, the results obtained cannot be generalized. Information on component fatigue behaviour is of importance not only to machine designers but also to production engineers in charge of component manufacture, since processing strongly affects fatigue strength, and to maintenance engineers in charge of the operation and repair of cyclically loaded machine elements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue is a mechanism of failure which involves the formation and growth of cracks under the action of repeated stresses. Ultimately, a crack may propagate to such an extent that total fracture of the member may occur. To avoid fatigue it is essential to design the structure with inherent fatigue strength. However, fatigue strength for variable amplitude loading is not a constant material property and any calculations are necessarily built on a number of assumptions. Cumulative damage of welded joints explores the wealth of research in this important field and its implications for the design and manufacture of welded components. After an Introduction, chapter two introduces the constant amplitude database, which contains results obtained in test conditions and which forms the basis of the basic S-N curves for various types of joint. Chapter three discusses the influence of residual stresses which can have a marked effect on fatigue behaviour. Chapter four explores variable amplitude loading and the problem of how information from laboratory tests, obtained under constant amplitude conditions, can be applied to the design of structures for service conditions. This problem is further investigated in the next chapter which is devoted to two and three level load testing. Chapters six, seven and eight look at the influence that the variety of variable loading spectra can have on fatigue strength, whether narrow or wide band loading or cycles of small stress range. Taking all of this knowledge, chapter nine discusses structure designs.Cumulative damage of welded joints is a comprehensive source of invaluable information for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers. It will also be of great interest for academics working in the fields of structural and mechanical engineering. - Covers the wealth of research in the field of fatigue strength and its role in the design and manufacture of welded components - Invaluable reference source for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers

Book excerpt: This book provides a basis for the design and analysis of welded components that are subjected to fluctuating forces, to avoid failure by fatigue. It is also a valuable resource for those on boards or commissions who are establishing fatigue design codes. For maximum benefit, readers should already have a working knowledge of the basics of fatigue and fracture mechanics. The purpose of designing a structure taking into consideration the limit state for fatigue damage is to ensure that the performance is satisfactory during the design life and that the survival probability is acceptable. The latter is achieved by the use of appropriate partial safety factors. This document has been prepared as the result of an initiative by Commissions XIII and XV of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).

Book excerpt: Zero-to-tension fatigue tests were carried out on double-V butt welds of ASTM A514 steel plate, 20 mm in thickness, which contained full-length lack of penetration (LOP) defects. The fatigue crack initiation and propagation portions of the specimens' fatigue lives were experimentally separated. Compression-to-tension fatigue tests were carried out on prime base plate, as-welded sound joints, and reinforcement-removed welds to experimentally determine the fatigue strength reduction factor (Kf) of the LOP defects. LOP defects as small as 0.5 mm wide had a profound effect on fatigue life. The fatigue crack initiation life was found to be short-only 10 percent of the total life-and could be predicted using fatigue crack initiation concepts. The use of KF(max), the maximum possible fatigue strength reduction factor, was found to be appropriate. In a separate substudy, the fatigue resistance of ASTM A514 butt-welded joints containing clustered porosity was determined. (Author).

Book excerpt: The notch stress approach for fatigue assessment of welded joints is based on the highest elastic stress at the weld toe or root. In order to avoid arbitrary or infinite stress results, a rounded shape with a reference radius instead of the actual sharp toe or root is usually assumed. IIW recommendations for the fatigue assessment of welded structures by notch stress analysis reviews different proposals for reference radii together with associated S-N curves. Detailed recommendations are given for the numerical analysis of notch stress by the finite or boundary element method. Several aspects are discussed, such as the structural weakening by keyhole-shaped notches and the consideration of multiaxial stress states. Appropriate S-N curves are presented for the assessment of the fatigue strength of different materials. Finally, four examples illustrate the application of the approach as well as the variety of structures which can be analysed and the range of results that can be obtained from different models.
