Book Synopsis The Fatigue and Static Properties of Butt Welds in Structural Steels by : L. A. Harris
Download or read book The Fatigue and Static Properties of Butt Welds in Structural Steels written by L. A. Harris and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of the first phase of a study of full scale welded joints: a study of the fatigue and static properties of butt welds. The purpose of the tests reported were to compare the fatigue and static properties of butt welds produced with the E6010 and the E7016 electrodes. Two types of butt weld specimens were tested: the longitudinal butt welds were tested with the applied stress parallel to the direction of welding, whereas the transverse butt welds were tested with the applied stress perpendicular to the direction of welding. The butt welds have been tested either with the reinforcement on or with the reinforcement removed by grinding. The specimens were subjected to a stress cycle which varied from a low tension of about 2000 psi to a maximum tension which was of such magnitude that failure generally occurred between 100,000 and 2,000,000 cycles. In order to more thoroughly understand the behaviour of butt welds subjected to repeated stresses, an extensive review of the fatigue tests of butt welds conducted previously at the University of Illinois is included in the report.

This book was released on 1955 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the fatigue and static properties of butt-welded joints in A-242 steel and to compare, quantitatively, these results with those obtained from similar joints in A-7 steel. Four types of specimens were employed in this investigation. A plain plate specimen was selected to determine the fatigue properties of the base material, a tee filletwelded joint was used to compare the fatigue properties of fillet welds deposited with E7016 electrodes on A-242 and A-7 steels, and longitudinal and transverse buttwelded joints were selected to study the fatigue and static properties of butt welds with the applied load parallel to and perpendicular to the direction of welding. All of the fatigue specimens were tested on a zero-tension stress cycle of such a magnitude that failure generally occurred between 100,000 and 2,000,000 cycles. To study the effect of surface geometry, the plain plate and butt weld specimens were tested either with the mill scale and weld reinforcement on or with all surface irregularities removed by grinding. The A-242 longitudinal butt-welded joints were found to be about 15 percent stronger under repeated loads then similar A-7 joints, whereas there was little difference between the average fatigue strengths of transverse butt-welded joints of the two steels. This book was released on 1980 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth data sets, for pressure vessel and piping steels, in reactor-grade water environment have appeared in various reports and publications since about 1972. All of the results which have been published from 1972 through 1979 have been plotted and are presented in this report. Beginning with a discussion of the need for these data, and an explanation of the laboratory facilities which are required for this research, this report goes on to describe the overall trends which have evolved through consideration of the data sets and the conditions under which they were generated. A model for hydrogen assisted fatigue crack growth is described and applied to the pressurized water reactor type of environment. A complete listing of references is included in the report. (Author).
Book Synopsis Fatigue-fracture Properties of a Semi-austenitic PH Stainless Steel by : R. Farrara
Download or read book Fatigue-fracture Properties of a Semi-austenitic PH Stainless Steel written by R. Farrara and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue and fracture toughness properties were determined for STA60 precipitation hardening stainless steel used in the structure of the 105 mm Light Gun. Fatigue properties (S-N crack for initiation and crack growth rate) and fracture toughness were measured on both parent sheet and welded joints for a range of heat treatments including fully re-heat treated and peak aged (450 deg C), overaged as in production (530 deg C), and as-welded joints not re-heat treated. The material was found to be notch sensitive. Fatigue crack growth was much faster, and fracture toughness much lower, in the longitudinal (rolling) direction of sheet because of the presence of nonmetallic stringers in the microstructure. Overaging had little effect on fatigue properties compared with peak ageing, but did achieve a significant improvement in fracture toughness. Weld metal was more resistant to fatigue crack initiationn than parent sheet, but welds not re-heat treated were drastically limited in all three properties because the weld heat-affected zones remained in the soft condition.
Book Synopsis Cumulative Damage of Welded Joints by : T R Gurney
Download or read book Cumulative Damage of Welded Joints written by T R Gurney and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-25 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue is a mechanism of failure which involves the formation and growth of cracks under the action of repeated stresses. Ultimately, a crack may propagate to such an extent that total fracture of the member may occur. To avoid fatigue it is essential to design the structure with inherent fatigue strength. However, fatigue strength for variable amplitude loading is not a constant material property and any calculations are necessarily built on a number of assumptions. Cumulative damage of welded joints explores the wealth of research in this important field and its implications for the design and manufacture of welded components. After an Introduction, chapter two introduces the constant amplitude database, which contains results obtained in test conditions and which forms the basis of the basic S-N curves for various types of joint. Chapter three discusses the influence of residual stresses which can have a marked effect on fatigue behaviour. Chapter four explores variable amplitude loading and the problem of how information from laboratory tests, obtained under constant amplitude conditions, can be applied to the design of structures for service conditions. This problem is further investigated in the next chapter which is devoted to two and three level load testing. Chapters six, seven and eight look at the influence that the variety of variable loading spectra can have on fatigue strength, whether narrow or wide band loading or cycles of small stress range. Taking all of this knowledge, chapter nine discusses structure designs.Cumulative damage of welded joints is a comprehensive source of invaluable information for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers. It will also be of great interest for academics working in the fields of structural and mechanical engineering. - Covers the wealth of research in the field of fatigue strength and its role in the design and manufacture of welded components - Invaluable reference source for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers

Book Synopsis Effect of Lack of Penetration on Fatigue Resistance of High-strength Structural Steel Welds by : Y. Tobe
Download or read book Effect of Lack of Penetration on Fatigue Resistance of High-strength Structural Steel Welds written by Y. Tobe and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zero-to-tension fatigue tests were carried out on double-V butt welds of ASTM A514 steel plate, 20 mm in thickness, which contained full-length lack of penetration (LOP) defects. The fatigue crack initiation and propagation portions of the specimens' fatigue lives were experimentally separated. Compression-to-tension fatigue tests were carried out on prime base plate, as-welded sound joints, and reinforcement-removed welds to experimentally determine the fatigue strength reduction factor (Kf) of the LOP defects. LOP defects as small as 0.5 mm wide had a profound effect on fatigue life. The fatigue crack initiation life was found to be short-only 10 percent of the total life-and could be predicted using fatigue crack initiation concepts. The use of KF(max), the maximum possible fatigue strength reduction factor, was found to be appropriate. In a separate substudy, the fatigue resistance of ASTM A514 butt-welded joints containing clustered porosity was determined. (Author).
Book Synopsis IIW Recommendations On Methods for Improving the Fatigue Strength of Welded Joints by : P J Haagensen
Download or read book IIW Recommendations On Methods for Improving the Fatigue Strength of Welded Joints written by P J Haagensen and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weld toe is a primary source of fatigue cracking because of the severity of the stress concentration it produces. Weld toe improvement can increase the fatigue strength of new structures significantly. It can also be used to repair or upgrade existing structures. However, in practice there have been wide variations in the actual improvements in fatigue strength achieved. Based on an extensive testing programme organised by the IIW, this report reviews the main methods for weld toe improvement to increase fatigue strength: burr grinding, TIG dressing and hammer and needle peening. The report provides specifications for the practical use of each method, including equipment, weld preparation and operation. It also offers guidance on inspection, quality control and training as well as assessments of fatigue strength and thickness effects possible with each technique. IIW recommendations on methods for improving the fatigue strength of welded joints will allow a more consistent use of these methods and more predictable increases in fatigue strength. Book Synopsis Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures by : A. Carpinteri
Download or read book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures written by A. Carpinteri and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
