Book excerpt: In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people's information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan. Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a thorough and comprehensive review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time. Besides surveying existing methods, this book also compares and evaluates some of the more promising schemes.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation we explore various ways of disseminating data to users in the wireless and mobile environment. Wireless data dissemination is an economical and efficient way to make desired data available to a large number of mobile or static users. There are mainly two basic modes of data dissemination, push and pull. Most of the current schemes have followed these two basic modes of data dissemination. Our approach is drawn from the observation that either of these two modes alone is not able to address several problems of data dissemination. We argue that a hybrid form of data dissemination may be able to address a significant number of those issues. We use our hybrid mode of data dissemination to introduce a novel approach of disseminating location dependent data. Instead of using the traditional way of request/response type messaging, we broadcast certain location dependent data and show that this way of disseminating is efficient and convenient. Effectiveness of wireless data dissemination depends to a large extent on minimizing access latency. To address this, we have introduced an innovative method called data staging. We demonstrate through our research that access latency may be significantly reduced by using data staging. It is essential to organize data in the broadcast so that user gets the idea about the position of data and the time lag after which the data will be downloaded in the mobile unit. To address this we needed a suitable indexing scheme. Several works have introduced schemes for indexing data. We argue that none of them have particularly addressed the issues inherent to the location dependent data. Since we have proposed broadcasting location dependent data, a new scheme is essential to address all those issues. We discuss and address these issues in our location based indexing scheme. Finally, we create a Java based prototype of our research and implemented it in a real wireless network to evaluate its performance. The result proves that some of the location based data should be broadcasted to increase efficiency and convenience on part of the mobile user.
