Book excerpt: Text in English and German. As in 2001, during the 2002 Cologne International Furniture Fair three internationally known designers squeezed themselves into the town's best known building between buildings. There they presented their ideas on the subject of 'expanding the gap'. From Tokyo came the idea of expanding the exhibition space with an installation to make it snow. Designer Tokujin Yoshioka had 18 kilos of down whirled up by fans at the end of the room to create an everlasting blizzard, and the largest snowball of the year. -- In order to burst through the austere geometry of the exhibition building, projections from lava lamps from the London-based designer Ross Lovegrove covered the greater part of the interior. The coloured, gently moving bubbles created in these lamps by heat caused the sharp contours and hard black and white contrasts of the ceilings and walls to melt and flow. -- Greg Lynn from Los Angeles installed an over-dimensioned, organic sculpture on one of the side walls. It reached out well into the room, and so the visitors were obliged to squeeze past it and search on the other side for space.

Book Synopsis Traces of Trauma in W. G. Sebald and Christoph Ransmayr by : Dora Osborne
Download or read book Traces of Trauma in W. G. Sebald and Christoph Ransmayr written by Dora Osborne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Both W. G. Sebald (1944-2001) and the Austrian author Christoph Ransmayr (1954-) were born too late to know directly the violence of the Second World War and the Holocaust, but these traumatic events are a persistent presence in their work. In a series of close readings of key prose texts, Dora Osborne examines the different ways in which the traces of a traumatic past mark their narratives. By focusing on the authors' use of visual and topographical tropes, she shows how blind spots and inhospitable places configure signs of past violence, but, ultimately, resist our understanding. Whilst links between the two authors are well-documented, this book offers the first full-length study of Sebald and Ransmayr and their complicated relation to the traumatic traces of National Socialism. Dora Osborne is Lecturer in German at the University of Nottingham."

Book Synopsis The Other '68 by : Christina von Hodenberg
Download or read book The Other '68 written by Christina von Hodenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a new, revisionist account of Sixties protest movements in West Germany. It challenges established narratives centring male intellectuals by foregrounding families, private lives, women, and old people. Worked from a wealth of new archival sources, the book argues that '1968' was just as much about gender conflict as it was about generational conflict--even if the former was often erased from public memory. The narrative follows three generations of Germans living in the provincial town of Bonn through the turbulent years of the late 1960s. It offers a genuine social history of the period, decentring the story of West Germany's 68 socially, geographically, and generationally. The five chapters cover the Shah of Iran's visit to Bonn and Berlin, the role of the Nazi past in framing generational differences, experiences of old people around '1968', the female dimension of the protests, and the sexual revolution. The book situates the West German case within the global and West European Sixties and engages with recent controversies on the role of female '68ers, the origins of new feminist movements, and the sexual revolution. Originally published in German in 2018 by C. H. Beck (titled Das andere Achtundsechzig: Gesellschaftsgeschichte einer Revolte, 978-3406719714), it has been translated into English by Rachel Ward.

Download or read book Marcel Duchamp written by Kornelia Röder and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Understanding and Translating Hybrid Texts by : Edmond Joel Kembou Tsafack
Download or read book Understanding and Translating Hybrid Texts written by Edmond Joel Kembou Tsafack and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines a new approach for considering the complex issue of hybridity and its translation. By building on the concept of translation as a three-phase process (reception, transfer and (re)production), it establishes the (contextual) function of hybrid elements in a text as the basis for translation or translation comparison based on a (focused) translation purpose. The model and methodology developed in the book provide the reader with operationalised tools for contextually abstracting the function of hybrid elements (Understanding Dimension) and using it as the basis for their transfer in another language (Translation Dimension).
