Zuerst wird Ockham in seinen geschichtlichen Hintergrund einordnen, um im Hinblick auf seine Stellung im Geschichtsverlauf sein Denken und Wirken besser verstehen zu können. Um nun seinem Wissenschaftsverständnis und der Wissenschaftlichkeit der Theologie bei Ockham auf die Spur zu kommen, muss man zunächst kurz das Gottesverständnis bei Ockham betrachten, um danach seine Erkenntnislehre, die stark von diesem Gottesverständnis geprägt ist, verstehen zu können. Nun weiß man wie der Mensch überhaupt etwas erkennen kann und sieht wie Wissenschaft und wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis durch diese Art des Erkennens völlig neu von Ockham definiert werden. Man kommt hier unweigerlich zu einem strengen Wissens- und Wissenschaftsbegriff. Am Schluss kommt man jetzt zur entscheidenden Frage: Kann die Theologie einen so streng formulierten Wissenschaftsbegriff erfüllen?

Book excerpt: Research on the medieval doctrine of the transcendentals is still characterized by one debate: its characteristic peculiarity vs. its structural correspondence to the modern concept of transcendentality. The present study on Peter Aureol’s († 1322) doctrine of transcendentals offers a contribution to that discussion by delimiting from both directions: by developing Aureol’s position in contrast to the contemporary position of a scotist-orientated, formalistic realism, it sheds light on the innovative traits in his doctrine. On the other hand, Aureol’s logico-semantical revision of metaphysics is presented as an intentional affirmation of tradition, so that a revised view can be taken of Aureol’s role within the development of a modern metaphysics of the object as such.
