Book Synopsis Untermassfeld by : Ralf-Dietrich Kahlke
Download or read book Untermassfeld written by Ralf-Dietrich Kahlke and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fossil site of Untermassfeld, near the town of Meiningen in Southern Thuringia, was discovered in 1978 and has been the subject of 25 field seasons. The digs have produced a stunning array of fossil vertebrate remains in stratigraphic context, making this unquestionably one of the most important Quaternary localities in Europe. In this volume the author provides the first full synthesis of the work, bringing the results up to date, and placing them in a broad context. With some 14,000 determinable vertebrate fossils, the Untermassfeld assemblage represents the most complete assemblage of the time span 1.2-0.9 Ma BP in the Western Palaearctic. Translated from German by Hans van Essen Edited by Adrian Lister

Download or read book The Pleistocene of Untermassfeld Near Meiningen (Thüringen, Germany) written by Ralf-Dietrich Kahlke and published by Romisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum. This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations at the Early Pleistocene vertebrate site of Untermassfeld took place over a total of 127 months, resulting in the recovery of an abundance of over 18,000 identifiable palaeontological finds. Led by R.-D. Kahlke, this incredible collection has been preserved and evaluated by an interdisciplinary team of scientists. Part 5 of the Untermassfeld monograph completes the series of descriptions and studies of the extensive finds from the site, including those of a bison bone pathology, new discoveries on fossils of wild boars, elephants, bears, giant hyaenas and the modifications they left on the bone material, on a large amount of unique felid finds, as well as on those of micromammals and monkeys. A synopsis incorporating a detailed account of the site origin, palaeobiodiversity, taphonomic characteristics, the reconstructed palaeoenvironment, chronostratigraphy, and the site's significance in western Palaearctic faunal history collates all the results obtained during the individual research projects. The addition of the complete excavation plans of Untermassfeld's extraordinarily rich fossil record adds the final touches to this five-volume monograph.

Book Synopsis Early-Middle Pleistocene Transitions by : Geological Society of London
Download or read book Early-Middle Pleistocene Transitions written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2005 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early-Middle Pleistocene transition (around 1.2 to 0.5 Ma) marks a profound shift in Earth's climate state. Low-amplitude 41 ka climate cycles, dominating the earlier part of the Pleistocene, gave way progressively to a 100 ka rhythm of increased amplitude that characterizes our present glacial-interglacial world. This volume assesses the biotic and physical response to this transition both on land and in the oceans: indeed it examines the very nature of Quaternary climate change. Milankovitch theory, palaeoceanography using isotopes and microfossils, marine organic geochemistry, tephrochronology, the record of loess and soil deposition, terrestrial vegetational change, and the migration and evolution of hominins as well as other large and small mammals, are all considered. These themes combine to explore the very origins of our present biota.

Download or read book Out of Africa I written by John G Fleagle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first two thirds of our evolutionary history, we hominins were restricted to Africa. Dating from about two million years ago, hominin fossils first appear in Eurasia. This volume addresses many of the issues surrounding this initial hominin intercontinental dispersal. Why did hominins first leave Africa in the early Pleistocene and not earlier? What do we know about the adaptations of the hominins that dispersed - their diet, locomotor abilities, cultural abilities? Was there a single dispersal event or several? Was the hominin dispersal part of a broader faunal expansion of African mammals northward? What route or routes did dispersing populations take?
Book Synopsis The Acheulian Site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov Volume III by : Rivka Rabinovich
Download or read book The Acheulian Site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov Volume III written by Rivka Rabinovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multidisciplinary research on the Early-Middle Pleistocene site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov has yielded abundant climatic, environmental, ecological and behavioral records. The 15 archaeological horizons form a sequence of Acheulian occupational episodes on the shore of the paleo-Lake Hula. These enable us to reconstruct numerous aspects of the survival and adaptation of ancient hominins, leading to a better understanding of their evolution and behavior. This book presents the faunal analyses of medium-sized and large mammals, providing taxonomic, taphonomic and actualistic data for the largest faunal assemblages. The study of modes of animal exploitation reveals valuable information on hominin behavior.
