Die Wunder können wir nicht mehr miterleben, aber die Geschichten Jesu sind einfach und verständlich für diejenigen, die ihnen mit offenem Herzen zuhören. Leider müssen wir auf das Charisma des Erzählers Jesu verzichten. Ich kann es mir nur vorstellen, wie er mit leuchtenden Augen und brennendem Herzen mit ausladenden Armbewegungen die Größe von Gottes Liebe und Barmherzigkeit angedeutet hat, wie er zu den Füßen der Ärmsten gesessen und ihnen mit dem Finger Bilder in den Sand gemalt hat, damit seine Geschichten noch anschaulicher werden. Jesus kommt einfach daher, ein Wanderprediger mit staubigen Füßen und ungewaschenen Händen und vergibt die Sünden. Das tut er mit Gottes Vollmacht. Und alles was er tut wird zum Zeichen dafür, wie es Gott mit seinen Menschen meint. Jesus sieht das Wesentliche, weil er Gottes Herz kennt. Die schmutzigen Hände beim Essen machen den Menschen nicht unrein, sondern was aus seinem Mund herauskommt, böse Worte aus einem bösen Herzen, die machen den Menschen unrein. Die Gebote sind für die Menschen gemacht und nicht gegen sie. Darum heilt er am Sabbat und pflückt mit seinen Jüngern Korn vom Feld. Die Theologen haben nicht das letzte Wort, sondern lasst die kleinen Kinder zu mir kommen, denn sie verstehen Gottes Reich. Bei Jesus wird plötzlich alles ganz einfach. Liebe Gott und deinen Nächsten wie Dein Selbst. Das ist alles. Selbst ein Glaube, der so klein ist wie ein Senfkorn, kann Berge versetzen. Sorge dich nicht um morgen, sondern vertraue in Allem auf Gott. Jesus war selbst tief in der jüdischen Frömmigkeit verankert. Er kannte Gott, wie ein Sohn seinen Vater kennt.

The present study reconstructs this theory from the fragmentary text and considers its consequences for the organization of the community. The author argues that first-century Judaism provides a more plausible horizon of understanding for the ascension story than the Graeco-Roman rapture tradition, and that Luke develops his 'rapture christology' not as a reinterpretation of the primitive exaltation kerygma (G. Lohfink), but as a response to the eschatological question, i.e. the delay of the parousia, so as to secure the unity of salvation history.

Book excerpt: This book explores the spiritual potential of faith, mysticism and transcendence in answer to the dangers of a mythologised state and the sacro-sanctification of (liberal) democracy and its rule of law. It searches for a curative for the pathological transformation of these institutions into – so called – political religions. Along this line, it explores the importance of spirituality and transcendence for political legitimacy, democratic participation and international cooperation, law and politics. There being no general agreed-upon definition of ‘spirituality’, the authors examine what may be seen as ‘spiritual’ dimensions of the political. These dimensions have in common a focus on transcendence as a vanishing point of rationality and rational justification. This vanishing point may become manifest, for example, in a primordial requisite of becoming an individual person; in responding – in freedom – to the call of theocracy; in the phenomenon of prophecy or political wisdom; in the remaining shards of formerly all-pervasive religious institutions; in tenacious hope for a democracy-to-come; in the courageous resilience and resistance of citizens of ‘non-’ or ‘un-democratic’ states; etc. The authors of this book, philosophers, theologians, psychologists, jurists and others, are more or less suspicious of the Modern theories of the social contract allegedly justifying democracy. It may turn out, however, that the inexhaustive and unfathomable dimension of ‘faith’ which comes up as an alternative is not so easy to handle as a ‘rational argument’. This ‘impracticality’ of faith and transcendence might be the irreducible yet indispensable predicament of democracy.
