Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years architectural discourse has witnessed a renewed interest in materiality under the guise of such familiar tropes as 'material honesty,' 'form finding,' or 'digital materiality.' Motivated in part by the development of new materials and an increasing integration of designers in fabricating architecture, a proliferation of recent publications from both practice and academia explore the pragmatics of materiality and its role as a protagonist of architectural form. Yet, as the ethos of material pragmatism gains more popularity, theorizations about the poetic imagination of architecture continue to recede. Compared to an emphasis on the design of visual form in architectural practice, the material imagination is employed when the architect 'thinks matter, dreams in it, lives in it, or, in other words, materializes the imaginary.' As an alternative to a formal approach in architectural design, this book challenges readers to rethink the reverie of materials in architecture through an examination of historical precedent, architectural practice, literary sources, philosophical analyses and everyday experience. Focusing on matter as the premise of an architect’s imagination, each chapter identifies and graphically illustrates how material imagination defines the conceptual premises for making architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated anthology presents the first English translation of German photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch’s collected writings. A towering figure in the history of photography, Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897–1966) has come to epitomize New Objectivity, the neorealist movement in modernist literature, film, and the visual arts recognized as the signature artistic style of Germany’s Weimar Republic. Today, his images are regularly exhibited and widely considered key influences on contemporary photographers. Whether they capture geometrically intricate cacti, flooded tidal landscapes, stacks of raw materials, or imposing blast furnace towers, Renger-Patzsch’s photographs embody what his peer Hugo Sieker termed “absolute realism,” an approach predicated upon the idea that photographers have one task: to exploit the camera’s unique capacity to document with uncompromising detail. Not only a photographer, Renger-Patzsch was also an influential and lucid writer who advocated his unique brand of uncompromising realism in almost a half century’s worth of articles, essays, lectures, brochures, and unpublished manuscripts addressing photography, technology, and modernity. Drawing on his papers at the Getty Research Institute and other archives, The Absolute Realist unites in one volume this skillful photographer’s ideas about the defining visual medium of modernity.

Book excerpt: Walter Benjamin’s 1931 essay “A Short History of Photography” is a landmark in the understanding and criticism of the medium, offering surprising new takes on such photographic pioneers as David Octavius Hill and Nicéphore Niépce and their aesthetic and technical achievements. On Photography presents a new translation of that essay along with a number of other writings by Benjamin, some of them presented in English for the first time. Translator and editor Esther Leslie sets Benjamin’s work in context with prefaces to each piece and contributes a substantial introduction that considers Benjamin’s engagement with photography in all its forms, including early commercial studio photography, the uses of photography in science, and much more.

Book excerpt: The Elegant World of Regina Relang is just that, an enchanting volume of pictures presenting a whirlwind tour through the entrancing world of haute couture that the late German photographer recorded throughout the mid-twentieth century. 160 of the best original images from Relang's estate follow the lady shutterbug's eye as she worked the Paris fashion shows, from her first days at Vogue in 1938 through to her rise as one of the leading fashion photographers of the 1950s and 1960s. Her spectacular images of the most forward, fashionable styles were featured twice a year in all of the major German fashion journals, for whom she represented the essence of the catwalk-shooting genre. This handsomely illustrated volume reproduces fine vintage prints from Relang's early reportage career and from the height of her days as a documenter of style, while also providing valuable insight into the historical background of her work. The Elegant World of Regina Relang chronicles the changing fashions of Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint-Laurent, among other arbiters of la mode, while also tracing the transformation of the image of woman through the mid-twentieth century.
