Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STRUCTURE OF THE VOLUME AND TERMINOLOGY USED This book contains scientific descriptions of 63 localities (Figure A) of at least national importance for Quaternary geology, geomorphology and environmental change in South-West England. These sites were selected by the Geological Conservation Review and are accordingly designated 'GCR' sites. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Quaternary. Chapter 2 synthesizes the geomorphological development and Quaternary history of the region, and outlines the principles involved in site selection. The individual GCR site descriptions form the core of the book. In the following chapters, sites are arranged and described in broad geographic areas and by research topic. This is necessitated by the widely disparate nature of the field evidence in Soutb West England: sites demonstrating the full range of Quaternary and geomorphological features are not evenly and conveniently dispersed throughout the region, and some areas have significant gaps. Neither do the individual chapters contain sites that neces sarily equate with particular site selection networks. Rather, the chosen chapter headings provide the least repetitive means of describing the sites and background material. Where possible, a chronological approach, from oldest to youngest, has been used to describe sites within a given chapter. Again, this approach is not always possi ble, and a group of sites may show variations on landform or Stratigraphie evidence broadly within one major time interval or chronostratigraphic stage; inevitably there are many overlaps.

Download or read book Granite Landforms written by C.R. Twidale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Granite Landforms provides a systematic, coherent, and comprehensive account and analysis of granite landforms. It examines granite forms and their genesis; the morphology of granite exposures; the nature of the materials from which granitic rocks have evolved; and the weathering processes near the Earth’s surface. It also describes major landforms and assemblages, as well as the minor features that have evolved on the major hosts. Organized into four parts encompassing 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of granite, including their characteristics, occurrences, and composition. It then discusses the factors that influence the weathering of granitic rocks and considers boulders and inselbergs, the all-slopes topography in granite, granite plains and rock basins, granite forms associated with steep slopes, and scarp foot depressions. The reader is also introduced to the piedmont angle, grooves or flutings, caves and tafoni, split rocks, cracked blocks and plates, and the role of climate in the development of landforms on granitic outcrops. Geologists, geomorphologists, geology students, and anyone interested in geology will find this book extremely useful.
Book Synopsis Igneous Rocks of South-West England by : P.A. Floyd

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illustrates some of the significant aspects of magmatic activity from Devonian (408 million years ago) to early Permian (270 million years ago) times in SW England. This period covers the progressive development of the Variscan mountain-building episode, from initial basin formation to final deformation and the subsequent development of a fold mountain belt - the Variscan Orogen. Both extrusive (volcanic) and intrusive (plutonic) rocks are found in the orogen, and chart the various stages of its magmatic development. The sites described in this volume are key localities selected for conservation because they are representative of the magmatic history of the orogen from initiation to stabilization. Some of the earliest volcanic activity in the Devonian is represented by submarine basaltic and rhyolitic lavas developed in subsiding basins, caused by the attenuation of the existing continental crust. In some cases, extensive rifting and attendant magmatism produced narrow zones of true oceanic crust, whereas elsewhere basaltic volcanism is related to fractures in the continental crust at the margins of the basins. After the filling of the sedimentary basins, and their deformation caused by crustal shortening (late Carboniferous Period), further activity is manifested by the emplacement of the Cornubian granites and later minor basaltic volcanism in the early Permian. Accounts of the constituent parts of this history have enriched geological literature from the nineteenth century onwards, and have contributed to the advancement and understanding of magmatic and tectonic processes.
Book Synopsis Comparison of Air Photo Lineations and Joint Patterns, Dartmoor, Southwest England by : Judy Ehlen
Download or read book Comparison of Air Photo Lineations and Joint Patterns, Dartmoor, Southwest England written by Judy Ehlen and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joint spacing and orientation data were collected at 58 sample sites in the field. Lineations delineated on 1:24,000 and 1:50,000 scale air photo mosaics were digitized, and orientations of and spacings between lineations were determined using a Geographic Information System (CAPIR). Common trends for lineations on both photo mosaics and from outcrop are east-northeast (40-90) and west-northwest (300340). Thus, lineations from the air photos and the fractures in outcrop probably comprise samples from the same population, but different individuals are seen at each scale: as scale decreases, visible lineations become increasingly longer and more widely spaced. Although the joint and lineation spacing distributions are significantly different from each other, the three distributions have similar modes (100 + 25). Weaker modes are similarly located near even 100's for all three distributions, suggesting spacing may be periodic. Spacing between fractures increases for similar orientations with decreasing scale. The scale independence of these fractures suggests they are fractal in nature.

Book Synopsis Comparison of Air Photo Landform Units to Statistically Defined Groups of Tors in Dartmoor, Southwest England by : Judy Ehlen
Download or read book Comparison of Air Photo Landform Units to Statistically Defined Groups of Tors in Dartmoor, Southwest England written by Judy Ehlen and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landform mapping units delineated using manual photo analysis procedures on two air photo mosaics, one at a scale of 1:24,000 and the other at 1:50,000, were compared to groups of tors defined using multivariate statistical analysis of field and laboratory data. Correspondence between the results of the two procedures was quite good: (1) members of most tor groups occur in the same landform mapping unit; (2) most landform mapping units contain far greater proportions of one, or not more than two, tor groups; and (3) the tor types defined statistically as typical of a given landform mapping unit tend to agree with the actual distribution of tor types in that mapping unit. The landform mapping units can thus be defined in terms of statistically significant descriptors in addition to descriptors based on analysis of stereo air photos. Finally, the greater number of mapping units on the 1:50,000 scale photo mosaic combined with the fact that most of the landform units were associated with one, rather than two, tor groups and with the greater similarity between statistically defined tor types and the actual distribution, suggests that smaller scale photos may be more useful than larger scale photos in relating photo-derived landform patterns to groups of tors defined statistically using field and laboratory data.
