Book excerpt: A children’s time travel adventure of a boy, a wizard, a witch, and a magic box—a beloved Christmas novel in England for generations and adapted into a classic BBC holiday series A “plum pudding of strange adventures, English legend, and spiritual feeling”–The Washington Post "A wintry fantasy classic." —Michael Dirda, List of 66 Favorite Books The English countryside, 1930s: Strange things begin to happen the minute young Kay Harker boards the train to go home for Christmas and finds himself under observation by 2 very shifty-looking characters. Arriving at his destination, the boy is immediately accosted by a bright-eyed old man with a mysterious message: “The wolves are running.” Soon danger is everywhere, as a gang of criminals headed by the notorious wizard Abner Brown and his witch wife, Sylvia Daisy Pouncer, pursue Kay. What does Abner Brown want? The magic box that the old man has entrusted to Kay, which allows him to shrink in size, to shapeshift, and to travel in time. The gang will stop at nothing to carry out their plan, even kidnapping Kay’s friend, the tough little Maria Jones, and threatening to cancel Christmas celebrations altogether. But with the help of his allies, including an intrepid mouse, a squadron of Roman soldiers, the legendary Herne the Hunter, and the inventor of the Box of Delights himself, Kay just may be able rescue his friend, foil Abner Brown’s plot, and save Christmas, too. At once a thriller, a romp, and a spellbinding fantasy, The Box of Delights is a great English children’s book and a perfect Christmas treat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edouard Roditi's The Delights of Turkey is a confection that reminds us that short fiction need not be only a relentless probing of everyday anguish. Here is a score of witty and ingenious stories, set for the most part in Asia Minor, where the centuries-long mingling of Turks and Armenians, Greeks and Jews has evolved a vibrant culture rich in diversity. The tales are often bawdy or fanciful in the manner of the Thousand and One Nights, while others are more poignantly humorous in style, as we meet pasha, princess, and peasant, become privy to the intrigues of the Ottoman harem, or follow the merchant caravans on their journeys east. The collection itself is arranged thematically in four parts. "A City Built on Seven Hills" sketches a timeless Istanbul. "The Chronicles of Bok Köy" tell of an Anatolian village and the legendary prowess of its young men, the redoubtable Achmet Hodja most especially. In "Orient Express" baffled European meets mysterious Levantine. The last section, "The Eternal and Ubiquitous City" returns once more to Istanbul, this time in its contemporary guise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Works of fiction are works of the imagination and for the imagination. Gregory Currie energetically defends the familiar idea that fictions are guides to the imagination, a view which has come under attack in recent years. Responding to a number of challenges to this standpoint, he argues that within the domain of the imagination there lies a number of distinct and not well-recognized capacities which make the connection between fiction and imagination work. Currie then considers the question of whether in guiding the imagination fictions may also guide our beliefs, our outlook, and our habits in directions of learning. It is widely held that fictions very often provide opportunities for the acquisition of knowledge and of skills. Without denying that this sometimes happens, this book explores the difficulties and dangers of too optimistic a picture of learning from fiction. It is easy to exaggerate the connection between fiction and learning, to ignore countervailing tendencies in fiction to create error and ignorance, and to suppose that claims about learning from fiction require no serious empirical support. Currie makes a case for modesty about learning from fiction -- reasoning that a lot of what we take to be learning in this area is itself a kind of pretence, that we are too optimistic about the psychological and moral insights of authors, that the case for fiction as a Darwinian adaptation is weak, and that empathy is both hard to acquire and not always morally advantageous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystery of the Sea (1902) is a novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. Combining occult elements with historical events involving the Spanish-American War and the 1588 defeat of the Spanish Armada, The Mystery of the Sea is an informed mystery and political thriller that helped to establish the Irish master of Gothic horror’s reputation as a leading writer of the early-twentieth century. On his first trip to Cruden Bay, a seaside village near Aberdeen, Scotland, a young Englishman named Archibald Hunter discovers his gift for second sight. This strange power grants him the ability to predict future events, as well as to see spirits. Trained by a local woman named Gormala MacNeil, who shares his powers, Hunter learns to control his second sight. When he returns to Cruden Bay a year later to live their permanently, he unwittingly purchases a trunk containing letters and documents dating back to the 16th century. With the help of Marjory Drake, a secretive American, he deciphers the letters to discover clues leading to the location of a secret treasure. Hidden by a Spaniard named Don Bernadino de Escoban following the English defeat of the Spanish Armada, the treasure has long been forgotten to all but Don Bernadino’s descendants. Enveloped in layers of mystery, pulled into events involving ancient piracy and the Spanish-American War, Hunter must rely on his hidden powers and uncommon courage to save not only the woman he loves, but his life. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Bram Stoker’s The Mystery of the Sea is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.
