Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin's music was performed during his lifetime, it always elicited ecstatic responses from the listeners. Wilhelm Gericke, conductor of the Vienna opera, rushed backstage after one of Scriabin's concerts and fell on his knees crying, 'It's genius, it's genius...'. After the composer’s death in 1915, however, his music steadily lost the captivating appeal it once held. The main reason for this drastic change in the listeners’ attitude is an enormous gap existing between the printed scores of Scriabin’s music and the way the composer himself played his works. Apparently, what Scriabin's audiences heard at the time was significantly different from, and vastly superior to, modern performances that are based primarily on published scores. Scriabin recorded nineteen of his compositions on the Hupfeld and Welte-Mignon reproducing pianos in 1908 and 1910, respectively. Full score transcriptions of the piano rolls, which are included in the book, provide many substantial features of Scriabin's performance: exact pitches and their timing against each other, rhythms, tempo fluctuations, articulation, dynamics and essential pedal application. Using these transcriptions and other historical documents as the groundwork for his research, Anatole Leikin explores Scriabin's performing style within the broader context of Romantic performance practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recording the Classical Guitar charts the evolution of classical guitar recording practice from the early twentieth century to the present day, encompassing the careers of many of the instrument’s most influential practitioners from acoustic era to the advent of the CD. A key focus is on the ways in which guitarists’ recorded repertoire programmes have shaped the identity of the instrument, particularly where national allegiances and musical aesthetics are concerned. The book also considers the ways in which changing approaches to recording practice have conditioned guitarists’ conceptions of the instrument’s ideal representation in recorded form and situates these in relation to the development of classical music recording aesthetics more generally. An important addition to the growing body of literature in the field of phonomusicology, the book will be of interest to guitarists and producers as well as students of record production and historians of classical music recording.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains eight recent plays, one-act as well as full length, and all from Manhattan. Some were in major New York theatre festivals and thus selected from international competition; others were fully produced by private theatre companies in the city. Several of the theatres were in or adjacent to Times Square. Production was especially gratifying when locations such as The Theatre at St. Clements, one of the first major off-Broadway venues utilized by the truly greats, were available. One of the shorter plays, Thy Neighbor!, appeared almost simultaneously at two different Manhattan theatres. In all productions the actors were a delightful and effective mix of both aspiring professionals and seasoned members of Equity. Photographs as well as programs of performances are included in this volume. The plays themselves are poignant and funnystories of all different kinds of people. Although of varied ethnicities and lifestyles, in the end they prove often to be very much the same, predictably human. The plays in this book are meant to be both preserved and shared. They are yours for the reading and producing. To Buttzville and Beyond, Its a delightful play. In todays world why do we still bother to walk when we dont have to? What experiences could it possibly bring that outweigh being extremely cold, completely wet through, at times absolutely knackered, and so intoxicating that you would do it day after day after day? This journey is challenging, some of you may accomplish it, some may understand it, only a few will connect with it. Put life into perspective and escape. I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free Michelangelo. You have the potential to be set free.
