Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri's relationship to mysticism is explored in this thesis. The argument is made that his Paradiso may be considered a mystical text, drawing on Steven Botterill's theory presented in his essay "Mysticism and Meaning in Dante's Paradiso". After a survey of the earlier mystical tradition, or the "old" mysticism, from the works of Plato to Bernard of Clairvaux, connections are made between earlier mystical texts and Dante's work. The later works of Francis of Assisi, Bonaventure, and Jacopone da Todi are explored in light of their connections to Dante's Paradiso, with an in-depth examination of the influence of Bonaventure. The "new mysticism" of the thirteenth century (as per Bernard McGinn's exegesis in his Flowering of Mysticism) is studied, and subsequently the effect of this new trend in mysticism as seen in Paradiso. By examining characteristics of mysticism and their clear influence on Dante's work, the case is made for Paradiso to be considered a mystical text.
