Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dansk Botanisk Arkiv, Vol. 3: Udgivet Af Dansk Botanisk Forening At St. Thomas I have dredged in the sea around Water Island. At a depth of about 10 fathoms and upon sandy, loose bottom a vegetation of Udotea and Halimeda was found, together with several Floridae. At St. Croix the dredgings were mostly not successful on account of the coral reefs which almost entirely surround the island. Only in the sea near Buck Island have more successful dredgings been undertaken. I much regret that I have not succeeded in dredging in deeper water than about 20-25 fathoms; as pointed out in the introduction to the Chlorophycae section, my attempts at this were negative, the dredge being immediately lost in the rocky bottom. But it is not only in deep water that the Red Alg occur; also in shallow water near the shore they are often found in great numbers. In connection with this may also be borne in mind the rich algal vegetation upon the roots of the mangroves and among which the red alg are very prominent.) With regard to the physiographical details, coral reefs, depths etc. and also to localities visited, reference should be made to the introduction to the section on the Chlorophycae; in this part moreover a chart is published showing the coral reefs, depths etc. in the sea surrounding the islands. Book Synopsis The Orchid Flora of Taiwan: A Collection of Line Drawings by : Tsan-Piao Lin
Download or read book The Orchid Flora of Taiwan: A Collection of Line Drawings written by Tsan-Piao Lin and published by 國立臺灣大學出版中心. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of written records of native orchids in Taiwan began in 1857 with a British botanist. After more than 160 years of study by European, Japanese, and Taiwanese scholars and enthusiasts, the list of native orchids increased to more than 470 species, including natural hybrids and varieties. The author exerted extensive e orts to include all known species in this work and arranged them based on the order of subfamilies. Scientific names, synonyms, and relevant references are provided for each species. Many of the species are provided with additional explanations in the “note” section. The uniqueness of this book is the line drawing illustrations which emphasize the structure of the column. In total, 500 figures are presented to accompany the species descriptions. These extensive line drawings were accumulated since 1971 and were mostly drawn by the author. More than that, this book also presents the gynostemium structure of more than 380 species, including the stigma, pollinium, rostellum, and column, in high-resolution color plates.

Book Synopsis Embryology of Flowering Plants: Terminology and Concepts, Vol. 3 by : T B Batygina

This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant embryology, dealing with the regularities of initiation and the first stages of development of an organism, is now flourishing because of the overall progress being made in natural sciences. Such discoveries of the 20th century as production of plants from a single somatic cell, experimental haploidy, and parasexual hybridization were of general biological significance. The combined efforts of embryologists, geneticists and molecular biologists yielded the discovery of specific genes that control meiosis, egg cell development and early stages of embryogenesis. The tendency to synthesize data of embryology and genetics has become increasingly noticeable. It is connected with the fact that the majority of problems connected with morphogenesis, such as differentiation, specialization, the evaluation of features and the definition of the notionsgene and feature andgenotype and phenotype concern embryology and genetics (embryogenetics) in one way or another. Evolutionary embryology has given rise to a new approach to the study of problems of adaptation in plants. In connection with the problem of preserving biological diversity under conditions of ecological stress, special attention is paid to ecological embryology, revealing the critical periods in early ontogenesis and plasticity and tolerance of reproductive systems at the level of species and population. The study of variability of morphogenesis and phenotype in population (life cycle variations and the diversity of reproductive systems) is the most important point in the population embryology of plants.
Book Synopsis Peter Thonning and Denmark's Guinea Commission by : Daniel Hopkins
Download or read book Peter Thonning and Denmark's Guinea Commission written by Daniel Hopkins and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-12-03 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years before Denmark legislated against the Atlantic slave trade in 1792, the government, anticipating the decline of production in the Danish West Indies as a consequence, embarked on a policy of agricultural colonization in West Africa. Peter Thonning, a young natural historian of the highly economic and geographical Linnaean school, spent three formative years in Africa and then for decades administered Denmark's African colonial undertakings. The international movement of colonial news and ideas can very usefully be traced in his unpublished writings, especially among the Guinea Commission's extraordinarily wide-ranging records. These rich archives and contemporary published opinion in this cosmopolitan Scandinavian society open fresh perspectives on the broader history and geography of European colonialism.
