These beautiful sacred gardens sit in the low hills of the Catskills, embracing a haven of hills, trees, lilies, springs, special flowers, waterfalls, and ancient rocks and stones. The stones and spring fed waters were glacially formed and with the design of Japanese gardens, evoke an aura of serenity and peace. This work is also in part, an orchestration of a solo piano work, that I composed and recorded for performances by a Limon class of gifted student dancers, at The Ailey School. The dance, choreographed by their dance teacher and performer, Maxine Steinman, is a beautiful lyrical kaleidoscope of leaps, lifts, suspensions, twirls, and runs, in a spirited rhythmic pulse of 3 + 2. This flowing 5/4 meter is the center passage of this work. The groves of the 5/4 phrases were inspired by Ms. Steinman's movements and creativity, and they relate to Innisfree's cascades and waterfalls that maneuver throughout the property and the gardens. The work forms one large arc, with various groves and sections. Each section transitions or segues into a new section with little or no interruption. The entire work is based on a five-note theme, which is introduced by the oboe in the opening measures, and is played in some fashion by almost all of the instruments. These five tones are melodically transformed throughout the work through transposition, retrograde, diminution, augmentation, inversion, rhythmic and octave displacement, and modulation. There are other melodies within the 5/4 passage, "Cascades and Waterfalls". The work is grounded in repeated motivic patterns, ostinatos, minimalism, and groves, and the overall harmonic progression is center in f minor. This music is impressionistic of my journeys to and from the gardens, and expresses my thoughts and experiences of the gardens, the stones, and their sacred powers
