Book excerpt: Taking the cue from the currency of risk in popular and interdisciplinary academic discourse, this book explores the development of the English novel in relation to the emergence and institutionalization of risk, from its origins in probability theory in the late seventeenth century to the global ‘risk society’ in the twenty-first century. Focussing on 29 novels from Defoe to McEwan, this book argues for the contemporaneity of the rise of risk and the novel and suggests that there is much to gain from reading the risk society from a diachronic, literary-cultural perspective. Tracing changes and continuities, the fictional case studies reveal the human preoccupation with safety and control of the future. They show the struggle with uncertainties and the construction of individual or collective ‘logics’ of risk, which oscillate between rational calculation and emotion, helplessness and denial, and an enabling or destructive sense of adventure and danger. Advancing the study of risk in fiction beyond the confinement to dystopian disaster narratives, this book shows how topical notions, such as chance and probability, uncertainty and responsibility, fears of decline and transgression, all cluster around risk.

In this connection Daniel Defoe set new standards for a long period. With his The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe he laid the foundations of the contemporary Robinsonade. “With its common hero, pseudo-authentic style, and focus on ideological problems of materialism and individualism, it has been widely seen as the first modern realist novel” 1, the critic David Fausett writes. But in the history of interpretation there are dissensions about Defoe’s role in the development of the novel. His style although it revolutionised the English novel, first was a topic for extensive discussions. From Maximillian E. Novak we get to know that “many of Defoe`s critics have regarded his fiction as a kind of accident arising from his desperate need to support his family and to keep off his creditors.“2 In the Rise of the Novel Ian Watt goes so far as to say that Defoe “is perhaps a unique example of a great writer who was very little interested in literature, and says nothing of interest about it as literature.“3 In contrast Hammond underlines the novel’s “lasting significance” that “surely lies in its consummate blending of divergent literary traditions and its fruitfulness as a source of myth.“4 Furthermore he concludes that “a story that has achieved the status of a fable must possess considerably literary and imaginative qualities and respond to some deep need in the human psyche.“5 Because there must be something in Defoe’s style and narrative technique that justifies the novel’s position in literature some critics have already tried to find an explanation for Defoe’s role in the rise of the novel. Realism is openly indebted, at the level of form and content, to imperialist and scientific advances. However, critical emphasis on this has obscured the extent to which major novelists of the period openly worried about the fate of mystery and the dissolution of tradition that accompanied science's shrinking of the world. Realism's modernization is inseparable from nostalgia. In Realism's Empire: Empiricism and Enchantment in the Nineteenth-Century Novel, Geoffrey Baker demonstrates that realist fiction's stance toward both progress and the foreign or supernatural is much more complex than established scholarship has assumed. The work of Honoré de Balzac, Anthony Trollope, and Theodor Fontane explicitly laments the loss of mystery in the world due to increased knowledge and exploration. To counter this loss and to generate the complications required for narrative, these three authors import peripheral, usually colonial figures into the metropolitan centers they otherwise depict as disenchanted and rationalized: Paris, London, and Berlin. Baker's book examines the consequences of this duel for realist narrative and readers' understandings of its historical moment. In so doing, Baker shows Balzac, Trollope, and Fontane grappling with new realities that frustrate their inherited means of representation and oversee a significant shift in the development of the novel.
