Book Synopsis Dangerous Instrument by : Michael A. Robinson
Download or read book Dangerous Instrument written by Michael A. Robinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As increasingly contentious politics in the United States raise concerns over the "politicization" of traditionally non-partisan institutions, many have turned their attention to how the American military has been--and will be--affected by this trend. Since a low point following the end of the Vietnam War, the U.S. military has experienced a dramatic reversal of public opinion, becoming one of the most trusted institutions in American society. However, this trend is more complicated than it appears: just as individuals have become fonder of their military, they have also become increasingly polarized from one another along partisan lines. The result is a new political environment rife with challenges to traditional civil-military norms. In a data-driven analysis of contemporary American attitudes, Dangerous Instrument examines the current state of U.S. civil-military affairs, probing how the public views their military and the effect that partisan tribalism may have on that relationship in the future. Michael A. Robinson studies the sources and potential limits of American trust in the armed services, focusing on the interplay of the public, political parties, media outlets, and the military itself on the prospect of politicization and its associated challenges. As democratic institutions face persistent pressure worldwide, Dangerous Instrument provides important insights into the contemporary arc of American civil-military affairs and delivers recommendations on ways to preserve a non-partisan military.

Book Synopsis Terrorism Risk Assessment Instruments by : R. Corrado
Download or read book Terrorism Risk Assessment Instruments written by R. Corrado and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for a distinct "terrorist profile" has been going on for many years, and while it is generally agreed that nobody is born a terrorist, there is plenty of disagreement about why a person might become one. Whereas personal and situational push and pull factors can be combined to determine how and why young people become involved in terrorism, preventing an individual from following a path that ends in violence without moral restraint poses an enormous challenge, especially in an open society. This book presents papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop titled "A Review of the Utility of Existing Terrorism Risk Assessment Instruments and Policies: Is there the Need for Possible New Approaches?", held in Berlin, Germany, on 29-30 November 2019. Researchers were asked to present papers for discussion sessions with invited participants and practitioners from a number of NATO member and partner countries. Various assessment instruments for identifying problematic individuals at an early stage were presented by experts. It was generally agreed that, due to cultural, religious and other differences, there is no simple way to identify the relatively few high-risk individuals among the larger population of politically radicalized but not necessarily violent individuals who pose no threat. Framed by an Introduction and Conclusion, the 16 chapters in the book are divided into three parts: Theory and Risk/Threat Assessment Instrument Policy Themes; Implementation of Politically Motivated Terrorism Protocols; and Personality Traits/Disorders, Anti-State Terrorism Profiles and the DSM-5 Personality Trait Instrument. This practice-oriented book will be of interest to all those tasked with protecting society from some of its most dangerous members.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackstone's Handbook for Policing Students 2013 has been developed from the best-selling Blackstone's Student Police Officer Handbook to reflect the multitude of avenues into the police force now open to future police officers, from pre-entry courses to PCSOs and Specials. Designed specifically to meet the new requirements of police training, this book is a must-have for those embarking on a career in the police. Parts of initial police training common to all new entrants are easily identified and there are specific chapters on qualification structures and training and assessment, meeting the needs of students whether you are entering policing through pre-entry schemes or through an alternative qualification route. This new structure means it is possible for students to omit certain Parts of the Handbook whilst still meeting the mandatory requirements of the revised IPLDP Diploma in Policing. Divided into six parts, representing key stages in your progression from pre-entry programmes (where appropriate) in Parts 1 and 2, to initial training and then confirmation, the Handbook leads you through the topics, covering theory, discussion and practice while developing skills of analysis, problem solving and forms of reasoning. Coupled with a comprehensive and accessible style, the book ensures you have the knowledge and understanding necessary to undertake independent patrol in a professional and competent manner. Key topics covered include Stop, Search, and Entry; Alcohol and Drug Offences; Sexual Offences; Interviewing; and Intelligence. Blackstone's Handbook for Policing Students 2013 is essential reading whether you are taking a pre-entry course or the IPLDP Diploma in Policing, looking to move on from your role as a PCSO or Special, or are involved within the security and law enforcement sector.
