Book excerpt: This new title from a proven author of women’s fiction (nearly 4 million units sold) will strike a chord with today’s women because of its investigation of the effects on families of the current economic difficulties. It will also appeal to the stores currently searching for more romance and women’s fiction. Carissa doesn’t know who she is anymore. She and her husband, Richard, are recent empty nesters; Richard is spending more and more time at work counseling his volatile clients and less time at home with his wife; his clients are starting to show up at the house at night causing Carissa to feel scared in her own home; and to top it all off, Carissa’s boss informs her that she’s been “let go.” She wonders where God is in all of this since He doesn’t seem to be around to protect her—and she’s already stopped trusting her husband. In the midst of her world tilting off center, she’s offered time at a hideaway on Maui. Hiding seems like the best way to respond to life’s overload, and the thought of being alone sounds like just the right balm to soothe her wounded heart. The languid Hawaiian sun, white beaches, and warm-hearted people bring respite, but meeting handsome Kai causes Carissa to toy with the idea of being romantically involved with him. Then, under a Maui moon, she looks to God for guidance and hope for the future. That’s when she discovers His hand still is on her life, and that love is closer than she ever realized.

Book excerpt: Maui is indeed a hiker's paradise. An impressive network of trails crisscross the second-largest Hawaiian island, from meditative beach walks to heady treks high atop a volcano. Hidden in cloud forest, more trails lead to tumbling waterfalls, hidden springs and groves of bamboo. Back down on the coast, treks lead to natural lava-rock blowholes and sea arches, past ocean pools, and deserted beaches. Wander across lava flows that feel primeval, examine ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs up close, or follow the King's Highway that Hawaiian royalty once trod. All this and more awaits on Maui's hiking trails, most of which are easily accessible day trips. From any point on the island, any of the dozens of trailheads pinpointed in this book is at most a couple of hours' drive away, and often far closer than that. Top Trails Maui presents 37 premier day hiking and overnight camping and backpacking trips suited to all levels of ability and interests. The book is divided into four major geographical areas: West Maui, Central/South Maui, East Maui/Upcountry, and Haleakala National Park. All of the trails offer scenic beauty and ease of access for hikers. Together, these trails represent the island's incredible diversity of ecological systems and environments, from lava flows and multi-colored cinder cones to cloud forests filled with native bird song and hidden waterfalls. Some of the hiking trails described here are popular with both locals and visitors, while others are virtually a local secret. With the Top Trails winning formula of easy-to-follow maps for every hike, trail-feature charts, feature icons, "don't get lost" trail milestones, and GPS waypoints, readers can easily identify the right trail for their interests, abilities, and available time.

Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and “one of the greatest poets of our age … the Thoreau of our era” (Edward Hirsch) comes a thrilling story, in verse, of nineteenth-century Hawaii. Here is the story of an attempt by the government to seize and constrain possible victims of leprosy and the determination of one small family not to be taken. A tale of the perils and glories of their flight into the wilds of the island of Kauai, pursued by a gunboat full of soldiers. A brilliant capturing—inspired by the poet's respect for the people of these islands—of their life, their history, the gods and goddesses of their mythic past. A somber revelation of the wrecking of their culture through the exploitative incursions of Europeans and Americans. An epic narrative that enthralls with the grandeur of its language and of its vision.

Book excerpt: First published in 1966, The Dangerous Sex shows how the irrational concept of the "dangerous sex" evolved and how it was – and is – used by man to maintain his dominance. He examines sexual practices and beliefs, marriage customs and rituals, and social behaviour in every society and every age from pre-historic times to the present day. The result is a revealing picture of the deep-seated male hostility that generates the way of the sexes and has fed it throughout human history. It is also a blazing indictment of this ingrained psycho-social pattern, as it unconsciously destroys and disrupts huge areas of human happiness. In this enquiry into misogyny, H. R. Hays suggests that men must face their own compulsions before a true and balanced relation between the sexes is achieved. This book therefore throws a new light on the problems of feminism, the feminine mystique and the whole controversy concerning the place of women in society, and will be of interest to students of literature, gender studies, anthropology and psychology.

Book excerpt: “If you’ve been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, this is it.”—Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Boundaries “Michael Easter’s genius is that he puts data around the edges of what we intuitively believe. His work has inspired many to change their lives for the better.”—Dr. Peter Attia, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlive Discover the evolutionary mind and body benefits of living at the edges of your comfort zone and reconnecting with the wild—from the author of Scarcity Brain, coming in September! In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort. Easter’s journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to meet the NBA’s top exercise scientist, who uses an ancient Japanese practice to build championship athletes; to the mystical country of Bhutan, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who’s found that nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways that expand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding thirty-three-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places on Earth; and more. Along the way, Easter uncovers a blueprint for leveraging the power of discomfort that will dramatically improve our health and happiness, and perhaps even help us understand what it means to be human. The Comfort Crisis is a bold call to break out of your comfort zone and explore the wild within yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling and true tale is set in the 1790's Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha the Ghttp: //www.google.com/webhp?rls=igreat, having conquered the Island of Hawaii, is marshalling his forces for an attack on the leeward islands of Maui, Oahu and Kauai. His main rivals, the Maui Brotherhood of Chiefs, fight among themselves on the island of Oahu fully aware of the threat from the east, but unable to quell their bitter internal rivalries. When the English trading captain William Brown sails his ship Jackal into the harbor of what is now Honolulu in 1794 he could not have foreseen the terrible consequences. War had broken out among the ruling chiefs, and royal brothers battled for control of the island. Brown understands his peril, but his ships need refitting, and his plans require King Kalanikupule to confirm Brown's previous agreements with Kahekili, the king's father. If Brown achieves his goals, Hawaii is sure to become a British colony, possibly bringing the Crown into opposition with Kamehameha. However Brown misjudges the impact of the war chief Kamohomoho, uncle to the king, and one of the few Hawaiian chiefs of the time who understands the Englishman's mind set. Having fought a month long battle with his brother, Kamohomoho first maneuvers Brown into providing aid in the war, and when the battle is finally won, into an implicit statement of loyalty to the Oahu King. In due course Brown is called upon to demonstrate his loyalty, and when he waivers his plans are doomed. Adding to the intrigue is the arrival in Honolulu harbor of the American vessel, Lady Washington. Her captain, John Kendrick, is no fan of the Englishman Brown and his intrigues and threatens their success. Also on board the Lady is a Hawaiian passenger, a young man known to both the crews of the Lady and the Jackal. Kavaialii, a descendant of Oahu royalty, has sailed to China with the Chief Kaiana, and on his return again found refuge in the service of Kaiana, now allied with Kamehameha on Hawaii. Kavaialii has come to Oahu on the order of Kamehameha to gather intelligence on Kalanikupule's forces and armament, and to seek out Brown's rumored agreements with Kahekili. As the Oahu war ends, the fear of Kamehameha's invasion reignites among the Maui chiefs, and intrigue, murder, and plots form and unfold. The chaos of fear and uncertainty causes Kamohomoho to wonder if his brother, the dead King Kahekili, has not indeed cursed Oahu by seeking vengeance for past transgressions through curses against his own family and the people of Oahu. The Vengeance Kahekili is the complicated but true tale of the fall of the last major resistance to Kamehameha's dynastic ambitions. It is also the revealing story of the first European to anchor in Honolulu Harbor. Well researched, highly annotated, and historically revealing, The Vengeance of Kahekili weaves a dramatic and exciting tale from the long forgotten facts of this critical moment in Hawaiian history.
