Book excerpt: Dancing with the Void is the story of an unconventional man whose existence was "mind-free, go-free, form-free, effort-free, time-free." In his own joyful prose, Sunyata chronicles his life-journey from contemplative farm boy and gardener, Emmanuel Sorensen, to humble Himalayan cave dweller, "Mr.Nobody". A lover of silence and solitude, Sunyata remained untouched by the common worldly conditioning that entraps so many. His fateful journeys, inspiring friendship, and the spiritual wisdom shared in these collected writings, all reflect the soul of an authentic seer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Denmark, in 1890, Sunyata was from birth, utterly without desire, ambition and ego. Thus, the name "Sunyata"—and description of "rare-born mystic"—was given to him years later in India by the revered sage, Sri Ramana Maharshi. A lover of silence and solitude, Sunyata remained untouched by the common worldly conditioning that entraps so many. His fateful journeys, inspiring friendships, and the spiritual wisdom shared in these collected writings, all reflect the soul of an authentic seer. Sunyata's experiences and musings are ever relevant, for they concern something that is of value to all—the illumination and liberation of the human spirit. Adyashanti writes, “Sunyata was the rarest of incarnations. A naturally born enlightened being of singular uniqueness and inventiveness. The story of his life is itself a profound spiritual teaching and a living example of how awakened spirit moves through the challenges of life.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "meticulously researched and comprehensive" (Financial Times) history of the devastating war in the heart of Africa's Congo, with first-hand accounts of the continent's worst conflict in modern times. At the heart of Africa is the Congo, a country the size of Western Europe, bordering nine other nations, that since 1996 has been wracked by a brutal war in which millions have died. In Dancing in the Glory of Monsters, renowned political activist and researcher Jason K. Stearns has written a compelling and deeply-reported narrative of how Congo became a failed state that collapsed into a war of retaliatory massacres. Stearns brilliantly describes the key perpetrators, many of whom he met personally, and highlights the nature of the political system that brought these people to power, as well as the moral decisions with which the war confronted them. Now updated with a new introduction, Dancing in the Glory of Monsters tells the full story of Africa's Great War.

Ideas about how to plan experiences that leave people who are in the same room as those ideas awestruck, and ideas to help you avoid the textbook, the worksheet the barely stifled yawn. Book excerpt: Dance and Light examines the interconnected relationship between movement and design, the fluid partnership that exists between the two disciplines, and the approaches that designers can take to enhance dance performances through lighting design. The book demystifies lighting for the dancer and helps designers understand how the dancer/choreographer thinks about their art form, providing insight into the choreographer’s process and exploring how designers can make the most of their resources. The author shares anecdotes and ideas from an almost 50-year career as a lighting designer, along with practical examples and insights from colleagues, and stresses the importance of clear communication between designers, choreographers, and dancers. Attention is also given to the choreographer who wants to learn what light can do to help enhance their work on stage. Book excerpt: With decades of international recognition as one half of Dinosaur Designs, Australian artist and designer Stephen Ormandy has spent the last 15 years expanding on his personal artistic practice to further acclaim. 'Only Dancing' is the first publication dedicated to surveying Ormandy's vibrant, large-scale oil painting and the playfulness he brings to everything he does.0Excerpt from essay by New York-based curator and critic Lilly Wei:0"Ormandy?s signature works are based on sophisticated, audacious colour juxtapositions and organic forms, inspired by art but also by the seductive curves of the human body and nature. He is particularly fascinated by the uncanny shapes found in Australia?s native flora and fauna, and in its unique natural topographies such as those found in the Great Barrier Reef and the outback."0This latest Formist Edition is produced with a screenprinted PVC dust jacket, metallic reproductions, and debuts an original typeface, Formist Physical, based on the hallmark intersections and modularity in Ormandy's work. 'Only Dancing' is a tactile, elegant, and slightly mischievous take on the traditional monograph? an object that catches the eye and keeps it moving, much like Ormandy's seductive paintings.

Download or read book Salsa Crossings written by Cindy García and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Los Angeles, night after night, the city's salsa clubs become social arenas where hierarchies of gender, race, and class, and of nationality, citizenship, and belonging are enacted on and off the dance floor. In an ethnography filled with dramatic narratives, Cindy García describes how local salseras/os gain social status by performing an exoticized L.A.–style salsa that distances them from club practices associated with Mexicanness. Many Latinos in Los Angeles try to avoid "dancing like a Mexican," attempting to rid their dancing of techniques that might suggest that they are migrants, poor, working-class, Mexican, or undocumented. In L.A. salsa clubs, social belonging and mobility depend on subtleties of technique and movement. With a well-timed dance-floor exit or the lift of a properly tweezed eyebrow, a dancer signals affiliation not only with a distinctive salsa style but also with a particular conceptualization of latinidad.

Book Synopsis The Chickasaws by : Arrell M. Gibson
Download or read book The Chickasaws written by Arrell M. Gibson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 350 years the Chickasaws-one of the Five Civilized Tribes-made a sustained effort to preserve their tribal institutions and independence in the face of increasing encroachments by white men. This is the first book-length account of their valiant-but doomed-struggle. Against an ethnohistorical background, the author relates the story of the Chickasaws from their first recorded contacts with Europeans in the lower Mississippi Valley in 1540 to final dissolution of the Chickasaw Nation in 1906. Included are the years of alliance with the British, the dealings with the Americans, and the inevitable removal to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1837 under pressure from settlers in Mississippi and Alabama. Among the significant events in Chickasaw history were the tribe’s surprisingly strong alliance with the South during the Civil War and the federal actions thereafter which eventually resulted in the absorption of the Chickasaw Nation into the emerging state of Oklahoma.
